MSFS 2024 mission packs: how do I install them?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Find compatible MSFS 2024 mission packs and install them on PC, Xbox or PS5, with Community-folder steps and fixes when packs do not appear.

Yes. MSFS 2024 supports third-party mission-style add-ons, including activity packages, bush trips, job generators and companion apps. On PC, install a native package in the active Community folder or use its supplied installer; Marketplace items install through the simulator. Xbox and PlayStation 5 users are limited to Marketplace-delivered content.

What counts as an MSFS 2024 mission pack?

“Mission pack” is a broad label rather than one standard MSFS 2024 format. Check how the developer describes the product before installing it.

TypeWhere it worksInstallation method
Native activity or bush-trip packageUsually PC; consoles if sold through MarketplaceCommunity folder, supplied installer or Marketplace
External mission or job generatorUsually PCDesktop installer, sometimes with an additional Community component
Marketplace mission add-onPC, Xbox or PlayStation where specifically supportedMarketplace and library interface

The built-in Career missions are generated and managed by Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024; they are not downloadable mission files. A third-party mission pack may provide similar jobs, but it normally runs outside official Career progression and should not be expected to award Career credits, reputation or certifications.

Before downloading anything, confirm that it explicitly supports MSFS 2024, your platform and any required aircraft or scenery. Our compatibility guide for free mission downloads explains why older FSX missions and newer MSFS activities are not interchangeable.

How do I install mission packs on PC?

Install the pack according to its delivery format; a Community package, desktop application and Marketplace product require different procedures.

Installing a Community-folder mission package

  1. Close MSFS 2024. Packages added while the simulator is running may not be detected until it restarts.
  2. Extract the downloaded archive. Do not place the original ZIP, RAR or 7Z file in the Community folder.
  3. Find the actual package root. A normal MSFS package has files such as manifest.json and layout.json near its top level. If those files are inside a second folder, copy that inner folder rather than the outer archive wrapper.
  4. Copy the package into the active MSFS 2024 Community folder. Do not use the MSFS 2020 folder by mistake. Installation paths vary with the store version and the Packages location selected during setup; our complete PC add-on installation procedure covers how to locate the correct folder.
  5. Start MSFS 2024 and follow the pack's access instructions. It might appear under Activities, add a toolbar panel or require a flight to be started at a specified airport.

Installing a pack with its own application

Run the supplied installer and allow it to install any required Community component. External mission generators are normally launched from Windows before or after starting the simulator and may connect through SimConnect; copying their desktop application into the Community folder will not work.

If an installer asks for a simulator location, select the MSFS 2024 Packages or Community location it requests, not the simulator's executable folder. Keep only one installed copy of the package, because an old manual copy can conflict with the installer-managed version.

Installing a Marketplace mission pack

Acquire the product through the in-simulator Marketplace, then use the simulator's library controls to download, install or enable it as offered. Marketplace files are managed by the simulator and should not be copied manually into Community.

On Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro, Marketplace content listed as compatible with that console is the supported route. Consoles do not provide access to the PC Community folder, desktop installers or external mission-generator applications.

Why does the mission pack not appear in MSFS 2024?

Most missing mission packs are caused by the wrong folder, an extra folder level or confusion about where the add-on is opened.

  • Wrong Community folder: MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 use separate package locations. Confirm that you modified the folder used by the running simulator.
  • Nested package: Move the folder containing manifest.json and layout.json directly into Community.
  • Archive not extracted: The simulator does not load a conventional package from its compressed download file.
  • Wrong launch point: Some products appear in Activities, while others use the toolbar or a separate Windows application. They will not necessarily create a Career menu entry.
  • Missing dependency: Install the aircraft, airport, library or base product named in the documentation.
  • Old or duplicate build: Remove earlier copies and install a version specifically declared compatible with MSFS 2024.
  • Add-on conflict: Temporarily move other Community packages out, test the mission alone, then restore the remaining add-ons in small groups.

Are MSFS 2020 mission packs compatible with MSFS 2024?

Not automatically. Some MSFS 2020 packages work in MSFS 2024, but only use one when its developer or documentation explicitly confirms compatibility. Changes to aircraft, scenery, scripting and activity systems can prevent an apparently simple mission from loading correctly.

FSX mission folders and their older mission-definition files are not compatible at all. Renaming folders or copying them into Community does not convert them into MSFS 2024 packages.

Can I create my own MSFS 2024 mission pack?

Yes, but creating a distributable activity requires the simulator's development tools and considerably more work than saving a flight plan. We explain the supported options, packaging limits and alternatives in our guide to MSFS 2024 mission-creation tools.
