Newark Liberty International Airport uses EWR because US airport identifiers beginning with N were historically reserved for US Navy facilities. Newark therefore could not use NEW and took EWR from the letters in “Newark”. EWR is its three-letter IATA code; KEWR is the four-letter ICAO code used in flight planning and simulators.

What is EWR?
EWR identifies Newark Liberty International Airport, which lies in Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey, and serves the wider New York metropolitan area. It is a code rather than a set of initials for the airport’s full name.
Passengers usually see EWR on tickets, baggage tags, departure boards and airline schedules. In the United States, EWR is also Newark’s three-letter FAA location identifier.
Why is Newark EWR instead of NEW?
Newark received EWR because the historical US allocation convention kept identifiers beginning with N for Navy use. With NEW unavailable, letters appearing in order within nEWaRk supplied the recognisable alternative EWR.
That restriction was historical, not a worldwide rule banning every N-prefixed airport code. In modern aviation systems, NEW belongs to Lakefront Airport in New Orleans, so entering NEW cannot identify Newark now either.
Did adding “Liberty” change the Newark code?
No. The airport adopted the name Newark Liberty International Airport in 2002, but retained its established EWR and KEWR identifiers. Changing a major airport code would disrupt reservations, baggage handling, charts, flight plans and navigation databases, so codes commonly survive airport renamings.
What do EWR, KEWR, NYC and NEW mean?
EWR and KEWR refer to the same New Jersey airport, while NEW and KNEW identify a different airport in Louisiana.

For Newark, KEWR follows the common contiguous-US pattern of adding K to the three-letter FAA identifier. That shortcut does not work for every US airport, so use a verified ICAO-code lookup method rather than assuming that any IATA code can take a K.
Why does EWR say New York?
EWR may say New York because Newark is one of the principal airports serving the New York metropolitan area, despite being physically located in New Jersey. Airlines and booking systems may therefore display “New York/Newark”, include EWR in a New York-area search or describe the destination market as New York.
This does not mean the airport is located in New York or officially called New York Airport. Its official name remains Newark Liberty International Airport, and it is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
A search using the city code NYC should always be checked carefully because search behaviour differs between reservation systems. Confirm EWR if you want Newark rather than JFK or LGA.
What is Newark’s ICAO code and radio call sign?
Newark’s ICAO airport code is KEWR, but KEWR is an identifier rather than an ATC radio call sign. Airports do not use airline-style call signs.
On the radio, pilots contact the named ATC facility shown on the chart or given in their clearance. At Newark that commonly means “Newark Ground” or “Newark Tower”; terminal radar services use the appropriate New York approach or departure facility. A pilot would not normally call the tower “EWR” or “KEWR”.
Which Newark code should I enter in a flight simulator?
Use KEWR when a simulator, GPS, FMS or flight planner asks for an ICAO or four-character airport identifier. Use EWR when it specifically requests an IATA or three-character code.

A mistake we see often is entering NEW or converting it to KNEW. Both lead to Lakefront Airport in New Orleans, not Newark.
