Oculus Tray Tool for flight simulator VR: install it safely, create profiles, tune ASW and supersampling, and fix settings that will not apply.
Oculus Tray Tool (OTT) is an unofficial Windows utility that applies Meta/Oculus PC VR settings from the system tray, including per-simulator supersampling, Asynchronous Spacewarp (ASW), Quest Link encoding and service controls. Install it only after the Meta PC runtime works, then create a conservative profile for each flight simulator.
For general PC flight-simulator VR, OTT affects only sessions using the Oculus PC runtime or Meta Link path. It does not install on a Quest headset, enable VR inside a simulator or replace an OpenXR runtime. If the headset does not yet work reliably, complete the basic PC VR connection and simulator set-up before adding OTT.
How do you install Oculus Tray Tool safely?
Install OTT only after the Meta PC software can run a VR session without it, so any later fault is easy to isolate.
- Confirm the baseline: connect the Rift or Quest through the normal Meta PC software and test the simulator with OTT absent.
- Obtain the genuine package: use an author-distributed release rather than a repack. If Windows or security software warns about the file, verify its origin instead of disabling protection or blindly bypassing the warning.
- Extract the package if required: run the supplied installer from a normal local folder, not from inside the compressed archive or the simulator directory.
- Approve elevation carefully: OTT may request administrator rights for Oculus service and system-level controls. Approve that only when the prompt identifies the package you intended to run.
- Launch OTT: its icon normally appears in the Windows notification area, sometimes under the hidden-icons arrow.
- Delay automatic start-up: leave start-with-Windows disabled until one manual profile works. When enabled later, make sure OTT starts after the Meta services.
OTT is a community utility rather than part of the Meta PC software. A Meta software update can therefore alter or break individual controls even when OTT itself still opens.
How do you create a flight simulator VR profile?
A per-application profile is the safest way to use Oculus Tray Tool because it avoids imposing one demanding configuration on every VR programme.
- Open the profiles section: add a profile for the simulator's actual running executable, not merely its launcher or updater.
- Leave supersampling unchanged: establish performance using the headset application's resolution and the simulator's own render scale first.
- Set ASW conservatively: begin with
Autoor the release's equivalent default setting. - Leave encoding controls at default: test Quest Link or Air Link stability before changing bitrate, encode resolution or related options.
- Save and launch normally: start the simulator through its usual launcher. Check OTT's profile status or log, where provided, to confirm that it detected the application.
- Change one control per flight: compare frame time, cockpit readability and head-motion smoothness on the same aircraft, airport, weather and view.
Some OTT controls are global rather than profile-specific, particularly service, audio, USB and certain Quest encoding options. Read the label in your installed release rather than assuming every value will revert when the simulator closes.

Does Oculus Tray Tool work with Microsoft Flight Simulator and OpenXR?
OTT can influence Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or 2024 when the VR session uses Meta's OpenXR runtime and Oculus compositor path. If another vendor's OpenXR runtime or SteamVR handles the session, many OTT graphics and ASW controls will have no effect.

Microsoft Store installations can make the simulator executable difficult to browse because it resides under the protected WindowsApps structure. Select the actual running process if your OTT release offers that method; otherwise use a temporary global setting and restore it afterwards. Do not take ownership of protected Windows folders merely to create a profile.
Should you use Oculus Tray Tool or Oculus Debug Tool?
Use OTT when you want saved profiles and tray automation; use Oculus Debug Tool for direct diagnostics and occasional manual adjustment. Many controls write to the same Oculus runtime, so running both with conflicting values produces unpredictable results—the most recently applied setting often wins.

Why is an Oculus Tray Tool profile not applying?
A profile usually fails because OTT is watching the wrong executable or the simulator is using a different VR runtime.
- Wrong process: point the profile at the simulator itself rather than a launcher, updater or store client.
- Different runtime: confirm that the active OpenXR or Oculus runtime belongs to Meta.
- Settings are being overwritten: close Oculus Debug Tool and remove competing start-up scripts or utilities.
- Incorrect start order: let the Meta service start before OTT, then launch the simulator.
- Excessive resolution: reset OTT supersampling when the headset application or simulator already applies an increased render scale.
- Encoding instability: return Quest bitrate and encode resolution to their defaults if stutters, audio faults or disconnections began after changing them.
- Global versus profile confusion: restart the Meta service or Windows after restoring a service-level option; some controls are not applied live.
Do you need Oculus Tray Tool for flight simulator VR?
No. OTT is optional and is most useful when several simulators need different ASW or supersampling profiles, or when you want Meta service and device controls in the system tray. The Meta PC software and simulator settings are enough for a straightforward configuration.
Before uninstalling OTT, return every altered control to its default, disable automatic start-up and restart the Meta service or PC. Removing the programme alone may not immediately clear every value previously written to the Oculus runtime.
