Install SteamOS on a PC safely: verify support, create USB media, protect your drives, complete setup and fix common boot failures.
To install SteamOS on a PC, first confirm Valve provides an official image for that exact device. Back up your data, write the image to a USB drive, boot it in UEFI mode, select the install or re-image option, then complete setup. Never treat a Steam Deck recovery image as a generic PC installer.
This is a general PC operating-system installation, not a simulator-specific setup. The crucial distinction is between hardware officially covered by an image and an ordinary desktop or laptop that merely appears capable of running it.
Can SteamOS be installed on any PC?
A PC is a supported SteamOS target only when Valve or its manufacturer supplies suitable installation instructions, or Valve explicitly labels an installer as compatible with generic PCs meeting its requirements. SteamOS may boot on other hardware, but graphics, audio, Wi-Fi, sleep and controller support are not guaranteed.

How do you install SteamOS from a USB drive?
The safe installation method is to use the image and procedure published for the exact hardware.
- Confirm hardware support. Check the full model, processor and graphics hardware against the installer notes. A similar-looking handheld or PC is not necessarily compatible.
- Back up every drive. Copy personal files, save recovery keys for encrypted Windows installations and synchronise any game saves that are not stored in Steam Cloud. A re-image operation normally erases the target drive.
- Obtain the correct official image. Use Valve's or the device manufacturer's official support source. Verify the checksum when one is supplied, and extract the download first if the imaging utility cannot read its compressed format.
- Write the image to a USB drive. Use a trusted disk-image writer and select image mode. Merely copying the downloaded file to the USB drive will not make it bootable. The USB drive itself will be erased.
- Protect other storage devices. If possible, disconnect drives that must not be touched. This prevents selecting the wrong disk and stops some installers from placing their EFI boot files on another drive.
- Boot the USB drive in UEFI mode. Open the PC's one-time boot menu and select the UEFI entry for the USB device. Do not change Secure Boot or compatibility settings unless the official instructions require it.
- Select the correct recovery action. Labels vary by image. An option such as
Re-imageor a clean installation wipes the internal drive, whileReinstall SteamOSmay attempt to retain some data on supported devices. Backups are still essential. - Complete first-run setup. Remove the USB drive when prompted, connect to a network, install SteamOS updates and test audio, graphics, sleep, Bluetooth and controllers before downloading a large game library.
After writing the image, Windows may claim that the USB drive needs formatting or show only a small partition. Cancel that prompt: the unusual partition layout is normal for bootable Linux media.
Can SteamOS dual-boot with Windows?
Dual-boot SteamOS only if the installer for your hardware explicitly supports custom partitioning or installation to a separate drive. Many recovery images expect to control the entire target disk and can erase existing partitions without offering a conventional partition editor.
A separate SSD is safer than sharing one drive. Disconnect the Windows disk during installation if the procedure permits, reconnect it afterwards, and choose the operating system from the firmware boot menu. Manual EFI and partition changes can break recovery or update behaviour, so do not improvise with a device-specific recovery image.
Why will the SteamOS USB drive not boot?
Most SteamOS installation failures come from incorrectly written USB media, unsupported hardware or the wrong firmware mode.

What should flight simmers check after installing SteamOS?
SteamOS does not make Windows-only simulators, add-ons or peripheral utilities Linux-native. Steam uses Proton for many Windows games, but compatibility varies by simulator, update, launcher and copy-protection system.

Test joysticks, throttles, rudder pedals and head tracking before committing to SteamOS as the only operating system. Basic USB inputs may work while the manufacturer's calibration, firmware or profile software remains Windows-only. Is Linux with Steam better for an unsupported PC?
For an unlisted desktop or laptop, a general-purpose Linux distribution plus Steam is usually safer than forcing a recovery image. It provides a conventional installer, broader desktop hardware support and easier access to driver and package-management tools while retaining Steam, Big Picture mode and Proton.
It will not reproduce every SteamOS appliance feature, and its interface and update behaviour differ. For a flight-simulation PC dependent on Windows-only add-ons or hardware configuration utilities, retaining Windows—either alone or on a separate drive—may be the more reliable choice.
