Is Orbx TrueEarth scenery compatible with X-Plane 12?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Learn whether Orbx TrueEarth scenery works in X-Plane 12 and how to avoid mesh, water, overlay and scenery-order conflicts.

Orbx TrueEarth scenery can sometimes load in X-Plane 12, but an X-Plane 11-era TrueEarth package is not automatically compatible with X-Plane 12. Treat each region separately: use it when its compatibility listing explicitly includes X-Plane 12; otherwise expect an unsupported installation and possible mesh, water, seasonal-ground and scenery-order problems.

Compatibility depends on the exact TrueEarth region

The TrueEarth name alone does not establish X-Plane 12 compatibility. Individual regions, editions and installers may support different simulator versions, so check the compatibility label attached to the specific product rather than relying on reports about another TrueEarth area.

Product statusWhat it means for X-Plane 12
X-Plane 12 explicitly listedUse the X-Plane 12 installation option and any version-specific files supplied.
Only X-Plane 11 listedIt may load, but it should be treated as legacy and unsupported in X-Plane 12.
No X-Plane 12 destination in the installerDo not assume that copying the files manually converts the package.

Our guide to checking an add-on's declared X-Plane 12 support explains which labels, installer options and update details carry the most weight.

Will an X-Plane 11 TrueEarth package still load?

Many X-Plane 11 scenery formats remain readable by X-Plane 12, so older TrueEarth imagery, objects and overlays may appear. File-format readability is not the same thing as full visual or technical compatibility, however.

A TrueEarth region can combine several elements:

  • Orthophoto textures containing fixed aerial imagery.
  • Terrain mesh controlling ground elevation, coastlines and texture placement.
  • Overlays supplying roads, vegetation and buildings.
  • Custom objects such as landmarks and regional structures.

The imagery is usually the least troublesome part. Older mesh and overlays are more likely to conflict with X-Plane 12's revised water, coastlines, vegetation and seasonal effects. Baked aerial photography may also look out of place when surrounding default terrain changes season.

For the broader distinction between software that merely loads and software that is properly supported, see our X-Plane 11 add-on compatibility guidance.

How should I test TrueEarth in X-Plane 12?

Install a TrueEarth region through its supported X-Plane 12 installer option whenever one is provided. If the package is labelled only for X-Plane 11, test it as a reversible experiment rather than making it part of a heavily modified installation.

  1. Back up the scenery configuration. Save a copy of Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini before adding or moving anything.
  2. Avoid duplicate installations. Make sure the same TrueEarth region is not present through both a copied folder and a linked external library.
  3. Launch X-Plane once. Let it detect the new scenery, then close the simulator before reviewing scenery_packs.ini.
  4. Check the layer order. Airports should normally remain above regional overlays, while orthophoto and terrain-mesh packages belong below airports and overlays. Preserve the supplied order between the TrueEarth components.
  5. Test inland and coastal locations. Coastlines expose old-mesh problems that may not be visible at an inland airport.
  6. Read Log.txt. Look for missing scenery components, failed texture loads and unavailable libraries rather than assuming every visual fault is a graphics-setting problem.

A mistake we see constantly is moving only one component and separating it from the rest of the regional package. Our overlay and scenery-order instructions cover the priority rules without duplicating them here.

Why does TrueEarth look wrong in X-Plane 12?

The symptom usually identifies whether the problem is installation, ordering or an incompatible terrain mesh.

  • Nothing appears: check that the package is inside or correctly linked to Custom Scenery, is not buried one folder too deep and is not marked SCENERY_PACK_DISABLED.
  • Buildings or vegetation are missing: confirm that the overlay component is installed and has not been placed below a conflicting package with exclusion zones.
  • Default ground appears through the region: another mesh may have higher priority, or part of the orthophoto package may be absent.
  • Coastlines or water are malformed: an X-Plane 11 mesh is the likely cause. Reordering cannot add X-Plane 12 terrain data that the old mesh does not contain; use an updated package or disable the incompatible region.
  • Roads or buildings are duplicated: two regional overlays are covering the same tiles. Disable the overlapping layer rather than rearranging unrelated airports.
  • Textures are blurry or performance drops: TrueEarth's imagery places substantial demands on storage throughput and texture memory. Reduce texture quality or object density as appropriate, and distinguish a hardware limit from a compatibility fault.

Should you use older TrueEarth scenery in X-Plane 12?

Choose an explicitly supported TrueEarth edition when fixed photoreal ground imagery is the priority and you accept its storage and performance cost. Prefer X-Plane 12-native or default terrain when seasonal consistency, newer water rendering and predictable support matter more.

An X-Plane 11-only TrueEarth package can be useful for controlled experimentation, but successful loading does not make it an X-Plane 12-compatible product. If coastline faults, missing overlays or persistent log errors remain after checking the installation and order, removing the legacy region is safer than trying to conceal the conflict with additional scenery.
