Prepar3D v4.5 vs v5.4: what are the differences?

Prepar3D v5.4 is the newer, DirectX 12-based simulator, with enhanced atmospherics, revised scenery and airport data, sloped-runway support, and later GPS, VR, networking and SDK improvements. Prepar3D v4.5 uses DirectX 11 and usually offers broader support for older v4 add-ons. Both are 64-bit, so v5.4 is an upgrade, not a complete architectural break.

Is Prepar3D v5.4 faster than v4.5?

Prepar3D v5.4 can render demanding scenes more efficiently, but it is not automatically faster on every computer. DirectX 12 reduces some driver overhead and gives the simulator more explicit control over GPU resources, while enhanced clouds, shadows, reflections and high-resolution scenery can consume any performance gained.

VRAM is the usual catch. A configuration that works in v4.5 may exceed the graphics card's practical memory limit in v5.4, causing stutters, texture problems or device-hung and device-removed errors. Unstable GPU overclocks and problematic drivers can produce similar symptoms.

Do not copy v4.5 graphics settings directly and assume they have the same cost. Start v5.4 with conservative settings, establish a stable baseline, then increase scenery complexity, shadows, cloud quality and anti-aliasing separately. Will Prepar3D v4.5 add-ons work in v5.4?

Some v4.5 add-ons work in v5.4, but compatibility depends on what the add-on contains rather than how similar the simulators look.

  • Aircraft: use a dedicated v5 installer or an explicit statement of v5 support. Aircraft with compiled gauges, DLL modules or custom systems may load with a blank cockpit, missing controls or an immediate crash when moved without conversion.
  • Scenery: simple object and texture packages have the best chance of working. Airports may need v5-specific elevation, terrain or runway corrections because the base scenery changed and v5 supports sloped runways.
  • Weather, shader and camera tools: treat these as version-specific. Anything that hooks into the renderer or simulator executable must support the v5.4 build.
  • AI traffic: aircraft models and flight plans may remain usable, while the program that injects or manages them may require a v5-compatible version.
  • XML gauges and data files: these are often portable, but any accompanying compiled code can still block compatibility.

Both versions are 64-bit. This means old FSX-era 32-bit gauges and modules do not become compatible merely because they worked in an earlier simulator. Build level also matters. An add-on labelled only “v5 compatible” may have been compiled or tested against an earlier v5 release, so check for explicit v5.4 support or an updated installer. Do not point an old installer at the v5.4 folder simply to bypass its version check.

Should you use Prepar3D v4.5 or v5.4?

Choose Prepar3D v5.4 when your graphics card handles DirectX 12 well, you want enhanced atmospherics and revised scenery, and every aircraft or utility essential to you has a supported v5 version. It is also the better branch for development work that depends on v5 SDK features.

Keep Prepar3D v4.5 when a critical aircraft, weather engine, shader tool or specialist module is v4-only. It can also be the more predictable option on older hardware with limited VRAM or a better-performing DirectX 11 driver.

The decisive factor is usually the add-on inventory, not the simulator's headline features. A mature v4.5 installation with all required aircraft working is more useful than a visually newer v5.4 installation missing the systems or tools needed for a particular operation.

How should you move from v4.5 to v5.4?

Treat v5.4 as a clean, separate installation rather than an update laid over v4.5.

  1. Inventory essential add-ons. Confirm that each aircraft, airport, weather utility and hardware interface has a v5-compatible release.
  2. Back up user-created files. Save exported control profiles, flight plans and add-on configuration files, but do not plan to copy the entire v4 configuration.
  3. Install and test stock v5.4. Complete a flight with default aircraft and scenery before adding anything else.
  4. Add products individually. Use their v5 installers and the add-on.xml package method where supplied, rather than manually merging v4 files into core folders.
  5. Check airports on the ground. Look for elevation steps, buried objects, duplicated buildings and runway-slope conflicts before assuming an older scenery package is safe.
  6. Tune graphics last. Establish stability with the aircraft and scenery installed, then raise visual settings while watching VRAM use.

A mistake we see constantly is sharing one mutable add-on folder between v4.5 and v5.4. Common texture libraries may be reusable when their documentation permits it, but executable modules, shaders and version-specific configuration files should remain isolated.
