To read an airport diagram for taxiing, verify the airport and chart date, orient it to your heading, locate your aircraft and assigned runway, then trace the cleared taxiways in order. Mark every hold, runway crossing and hot spot, and confirm each turn against cockpit heading, signs and surface markings.
What does an airport taxiway diagram show?
For Aviation & Real-World Flying, an airport diagram is the plan view used to understand the ground layout between aprons, taxiways and runways. “Taxi diagram”, “taxi chart” and “airport taxiway diagram” often describe the same chart, although large airports may publish separate stand, apron or low-visibility charts.
Always use the legend printed for that chart series. Colours, line weights, holding-position symbols and whether the drawing is to scale vary between chart authorities; visual appearance alone is not a reliable taxiway diagram legend.

Runway numbers represent approximate magnetic direction rounded to the nearest ten degrees, with the final zero omitted. Runway 27 therefore points roughly west, while Runway 09 is the opposite end of the same pavement. Parallel runways add L, C or R. These numbers help with orientation, but they are not precise taxi headings.
What does HS1 mean on an airport diagram?
HS1 means Hot Spot 1 on that particular airport chart. It is not an airport identifier and does not refer to one universal location. Another airport can have its own unrelated HS1.
The number only identifies the callout; the associated note explains the actual hazard, such as an easily missed hold line, closely spaced intersections or a taxiway that appears to continue across a runway. How do I turn an ATC clearance into a taxi route?
Convert the clearance into an ordered list of taxiways, crossings and stopping points before releasing the brakes.
- Verify the chart. Check the airport identifier and chart issue. For real operations, use the applicable official chart and review operational notices for closures or construction that may not appear on it.
- Locate the aircraft precisely. Find the stand, apron exit or taxiway and establish which way the nose is pointing. Do not assume the top of the diagram is ahead.
- Copy the clearance in sequence. A clearance such as
Runway 27, taxi via Charlie, Alpha, hold short Runway 18can be written asC - A - HOLD RWY 18. - Trace the complete route. Follow C from your actual position to A, then A towards the assigned runway. Check that every junction exists and that you have not traced a similarly named branch such as A1.
- Mark each limit. Identify runway crossings, hold-short points, hot spots, closed sections and any place where the clearance stops.
- Brief difficult turns. Decide in advance whether the next taxiway will be left, right or ahead and what heading you expect after turning.
- Verify while taxiing. At every junction, compare the diagram with the location sign, direction sign, surface centreline and aircraft heading. Recheck immediately after the turn.
An assigned runway is not, by itself, permission to cross another runway on the way there. Crossing procedures and phraseology vary by authority, but the crossing must be unmistakably authorised under the procedure in use. If it is not, stop before the holding position and ask.
Where is the taxi hold, and when must I stop?
A taxi hold or taxi holding position is a defined place where an aircraft must stop when required by its clearance, a signal or the applicable operating procedure.

A common runway holding-position marking has two solid and two dashed yellow lines. When approaching from the taxiway side, the solid lines are nearest: stop before them so that no part of the aircraft extends beyond the limit. Exact chart symbols and additional holding patterns vary, so compare the diagram with its own legend.
Phraseology matters as well. Hold short identifies a feature you must not pass. Hold position can mean stop where you are rather than continue looking for a charted line. If the instruction and diagram do not produce one clear stopping point, ask ATC to clarify it.
How do taxi markings and signs match the diagram?
The diagram predicts what lies ahead; signs and taxi markings confirm your location from the cockpit.
- Yellow taxiway centreline: guides the aircraft along a paved route but does not grant clearance to follow it across a runway or stop bar.
- Black sign with yellow characters: normally identifies the taxiway or runway on which the aircraft is located.
- Yellow sign with black characters and arrows: points towards intersecting taxiways, runways or destinations.
- Red sign with white characters: gives a mandatory instruction or identifies a protected boundary, commonly a runway holding position.
- White runway markings: help distinguish runway pavement from the yellow markings associated with taxi routes.
- Closure markings: show that pavement is closed, but temporary restrictions may instead be communicated operationally and may not yet appear on the diagram.

How do I keep the taxi diagram correctly oriented?
The chart is correctly oriented when you can translate its north arrow into left, right and ahead from the aircraft’s actual heading.
On a north-up chart, an aircraft facing south has east on its left, even though east appears on the right-hand side of the page. Rotating a paper chart or electronic display until the aircraft’s direction points towards the top can reduce errors at angled or closely spaced intersections.
A moving-map aircraft symbol is useful confirmation, not sole evidence of position. Database error, weak positioning or a mismatch between the chart and simulator scenery can put the symbol beside the pavement or attach it to the wrong taxiway. Check the heading, sign and marking before accepting the map position.
Why does the airport diagram not show my gate?
The main airport diagram may omit individual gates because they would be unreadable at its scale.
Large airports commonly split the information between an aerodrome diagram, detailed apron chart and stand or parking chart. Find the stand on the detailed chart, follow the apron route to a named taxiway, then transfer to the main taxi chart. In a flight simulator, three different revisions can exist at once: the visible airport scenery, the navigation database used by ATC, and the external chart. That explains missing gates, renamed taxiways and routes that pass through newly constructed pavement.
For real flying, the valid operational chart, notices and ATC instructions take precedence. For offline simulation, a chart matching the installed scenery is often easier to use than a newer chart showing construction the simulator does not contain. With online ATC, report the mismatch rather than inventing an uncharted route.
What should I do if I become unsure of my position?
Stop before entering any runway or protected area, tell ATC that you are uncertain of your position, and request clarification or progressive taxi instructions.
Do not make another turn merely to test whether the route looks right. If already on a runway, advise ATC immediately and follow its instruction rather than stopping or turning unpredictably. - Treating the top of the page as forward: use the north arrow and aircraft heading before choosing left or right.
- Confusing A with A1: suffixes identify separate taxiways or branches; copy the full designator.
- Tracing the route backwards: mark both the starting position and destination before following the taxiway sequence.
- Missing the opposite runway number: remember that 09 and 27, or 18 and 36, normally identify opposite ends of the same pavement.
- Assuming taxi clearance includes a crossing: mark every intervening runway and verify crossing authority separately.
- Ignoring HS1 because the route looks simple: read the hot-spot note; the hazard may not be obvious from the plan view.
- Trusting colour or line thickness: consult the chart’s taxi diagram legend because symbology differs between publishers.
- Continuing after scenery and chart diverge: stop clear of protected areas, establish which revision is represented and tell ATC about the discrepancy.
