What does an airport diagram show?

Symbols vary between chart authorities, so use the diagram's own legend rather than relying on colour or line thickness alone.

Runway numbers indicate approximate magnetic direction: Runway 27 points roughly west, while the opposite end is Runway 09. Parallel runways add L, C or R. A runway number is not a precise taxi heading, so do not use it as a substitute for the compass or directional signs.

How do I turn an ATC clearance into a taxi route?
A taxi clearance becomes manageable when it is reduced to an ordered sequence of taxiways, crossings and stopping points.
- Verify the diagram. Check the airport identifier and chart date. In real flying, review applicable NOTAMs because closures, construction and temporary routes may not appear on the printed diagram.
- Find the aircraft. Identify the stand, apron exit or taxiway on which the aircraft is actually positioned. Confirm the nose direction rather than assuming the top of the page is ahead.
- Write the route in order. If ATC says
Runway 27, taxi via Charlie, Alpha, hold short Runway 18, record it asC - A - HOLD 18. - Trace every segment. Follow Charlie from the apron to Alpha, then follow Alpha towards Runway 27. Mark the point where the route meets Runway 18.
- Identify restrictions. Circle hold-short points, runway crossings, hotspots and any place where two similarly named taxiways meet.
- Verify while moving. At each intersection, compare the chart with the location sign, direction sign, surface marking and aircraft heading. Do not wait until several turns have passed to check.
Never infer permission to cross a runway merely because the assigned runway lies beyond it. Runway-crossing phraseology and local procedures differ, but the safe rule is simple: cross only when the clearance explicitly authorises that movement. Read back runway hold-short and crossing instructions exactly as required by the controlling authority.
How do I keep the diagram correctly oriented?
The diagram is correctly oriented when you can relate its north arrow to the aircraft's actual heading and identify which charted branch lies left, right or ahead.
For example, with the aircraft heading south, east is on your left even if it appears on the right-hand side of a north-up chart. Rotating a paper chart or electronic display so the aircraft's direction points towards the top often reduces wrong turns, especially at angled intersections.
A moving-map aircraft symbol helps with position awareness, but it should confirm rather than replace outside checks. GPS error, database age or mismatched simulator scenery can place the symbol beside the taxiway instead of on it.
Where must I stop on an airport diagram?
You must stop at any holding position specified by ATC, at an illuminated red stop bar, and whenever your clearance or position is uncertain.
At a runway holding position, the painted marking has two solid and two dashed yellow lines. Approaching from the taxiway side, stop before the solid lines unless cleared to cross or enter. An ILS or approach-area holding position may be farther from the runway than the normal runway hold. ATC can use it to protect navigation signals or an approach surface, particularly in low visibility. It is easy to mistake this for an ordinary intermediate line, so check how an ILS holding position is shown and used.
Why does the diagram not show my gate?
Large airports often split ground information across an aerodrome diagram, parking or stand chart, and one or more detailed apron charts.
The main diagram may show only terminal outlines and apron names because individual stand numbers would be unreadable at that scale. Start with the detailed parking chart, follow the apron route to a named taxiway, then transfer to the main airport diagram.
In a flight simulator, stand numbers and taxiway labels can disagree with the chart when the scenery and navigation database represent different airport revisions. Use a chart matching the installed scenery where possible. If the mismatch affects online ATC, report it rather than silently taking an uncharted route.
Common airport-diagram mistakes
- Starting from the wrong stand: confirm the terminal, stand number and direction the aircraft is facing before tracing the route.
- Confusing A with A1: suffixes identify different taxiways or branches, not interchangeable names.
- Following the route backwards: locate both your start and destination before deciding which direction along a taxiway is correct.
- Missing the opposite runway designator: Runway 18 and Runway 36 are opposite ends of the same pavement.
- Ignoring hotspots: read the associated note or inset before taxiing; the callout alone does not explain the hazard.
- Trusting the moving map alone: confirm every turn using the sign, marking and heading.
