To make cockpit lighting look realistic at night in any flight simulator, dim instrument backlighting until it is just readable, keep dome and broad flood lights off during normal flight, reduce over-bright glass displays, and calibrate the monitor first. What should realistic night cockpit lighting look like?
A realistically lit cockpit retains deep shadows while keeping essential instruments legible from the normal pilot viewpoint. It should not resemble a brightly illuminated room, nor should switches and gauges disappear into featureless black.
Most aircraft have several independent lighting systems. Using the correct one matters more than simply increasing overall brightness.

Older analogue cockpits often need more restrained flood lighting than their simulator defaults suggest. Glass cockpits require particular attention to screen brightness: daytime display settings are normally overpowering after dark.
Set cockpit lights in the right order
The most reliable method is to configure local light sources first and graphics settings last.
- Darken the room and cockpit hardware. Bright keyboards, button panels and room lamps prevent your eyes from adapting and encourage you to over-light the simulated cockpit.
- Start from the normal pilot viewpoint. Do not judge lighting through an external camera or a close-up of the panel; exposure and apparent brightness can change with camera direction.
- Turn off the dome light. Bring up integral instrument lighting until markings are readable without making the panel glow.
- Add only enough flood lighting for controls. Pedestal and overhead flood lights should reveal switches while leaving recesses and unused areas comparatively dark.
- Dim every glass display separately. Check the primary displays, navigation unit, radios and FMS. A bright screen beside a dim panel is one of the most common sources of an artificial-looking cockpit.
- Test several outside conditions. Ramp lighting, moonlight, cloud, rain and landing-light reflections can all affect the apparent cockpit brightness.
- Change global graphics settings one at a time. Keep a record of the original value so one troublesome aircraft does not lead to poor lighting everywhere else.
Which graphics settings affect night cockpit lighting?
Exposure, gamma, bloom and HDR can change cockpit lighting substantially, but they solve different problems and are not available in every simulator.
- Exposure or eye adaptation: Adjust this when the whole image changes brightness as the camera turns between the panel and windscreen. Looking down removes the bright exterior from view, so automatic exposure may suddenly brighten the cockpit.
- Gamma: Use this to correct the overall mid-tone balance, not as an instrument-light dimmer. Excessive gamma turns black areas grey; too little crushes shadow detail.
- Bloom: Reduce it when illuminated labels, annunciators and airport lights develop large halos. Turning bloom off entirely can make genuine light spill look unnaturally hard.
- HDR: Use HDR only with a correctly configured HDR display and operating-system output. A bad black-point or peak-brightness calibration can make the cockpit either murky or glaring.

Why does the cockpit brighten when I look down?
The cockpit usually brightens when automatic exposure no longer sees the bright sky, runway or airport lights through the windscreen. This is camera adaptation rather than a faulty panel-light switch.
If the simulator provides an exposure or adaptation control, reduce the effect gradually. Otherwise, lower excessively bright exterior lights and bloom before darkening the cockpit itself. Avoid using a fixed extreme exposure value: it may improve one night scene while making dawn, dusk and daytime cockpits unusable.
Why is one aircraft much brighter or darker than the others?
If only one aircraft has bad night lighting, the aircraft’s emissive textures, materials, gauge configuration or light effects are the likely cause. Do not recalibrate the entire simulator around one add-on.
First remove duplicate lighting modifications, verify that the aircraft package is complete and check whether every variant has the same problem.
