Runway vs taxiway vs apron: what is the difference?
Learn the difference between a runway, taxiway and apron, including their purposes, markings, lights, control rules and use in flight simulators.
A runway is the defined airport area prepared for take-off and landing; a taxiway is a route linking runways with aprons and other airport areas; an apron is where aircraft park, board, load, refuel and receive servicing. Runway, taxiway and apron compared
The practical distinction is simple: use a runway for flight operations, a taxiway for movement between airport areas, and an apron for parking and ground handling.

If an aircraft is travelling across the airport, it normally follows a charted taxiway. If it is approaching or leaving a parking stand, it uses an apron taxilane or stand lead-in line. It enters a runway only for take-off, landing, crossing or an authorised backtrack.
These areas are not identified by pavement width alone. A broad parallel taxiway can resemble a runway, while a small runway may be grass, gravel or narrower than the adjoining apron.
How can pilots tell a runway from a taxiway?
Runways are normally identified by white markings and runway numbers, while taxiways use yellow markings and letter-based identifiers.
- Runway: Most paved runways have white threshold markings, centreline dashes, edge lines and designation numbers from
01to36, derived from their magnetic direction. Parallel runways may addL,CorR. Runway edge lights are predominantly white, threshold lights appear green from the approach side, and runway-end lights show red towards an aircraft on the runway. - Taxiway: A continuous yellow centreline marks the route. Blue edge lights and green centreline lights may be installed, especially at larger airports. Taxiways are usually named with letters or combinations such as
A,B2orAA. - Apron: Gates, numbered stands, marshallers, docking guidance, jet bridges, baggage vehicles and stand lead-in lines indicate a parking and servicing area. Apron paint and lighting are less uniform than runway and taxiway systems.
A red sign with white runway characters beside a holding position is a strong warning that the protected runway lies ahead. The standard holding-position marking has two solid and two broken yellow lines; when approaching from a taxiway, the aircraft encounters the solid lines first. What is an apron taxiway?
An apron taxiway is a designated taxi route running through or along an apron, allowing aircraft to move across the area without treating the whole apron as open manoeuvring space.
An aircraft stand taxilane branches towards parking stands and may have tighter wingtip, engine and object clearances than a main taxiway. Terminology varies between authorities and airports: a chart may call the route an apron taxiway, taxilane or simply a taxiway on the apron. The published chart and centreline determine the route.
Pilots should not cut diagonally across an apparently empty apron. Service roads, parked equipment, blast-sensitive areas and stand clearances may not be obvious from the cockpit, particularly at night or in a simulator with sparse ground objects.
What does a pilot do on the apron?
On the apron, pilots follow stand guidance, coordinate pushback or engine start where required, taxi at low speed and maintain clearance from vehicles, equipment and nearby aircraft.
Arrival at a stand may be directed by a marshaller or visual docking system. Departure commonly begins with pushback from the stand before the aircraft joins a taxilane and then the main taxiway system. Can an aircraft taxi on a runway or apron?
Yes. Taxiing describes aircraft ground movement, so an aircraft can taxi on an apron, a taxiway or a runway.
A departure normally proceeds from an apron stand to an apron taxilane, along one or more taxiways, and then to the runway holding position. At an airport without a suitable parallel taxiway, the aircraft may enter the runway and backtrack along it before turning around for departure.
Taxiing on a runway does not turn it into a taxiway. Runway separation and entry rules still apply, including when crossing it or backtracking after landing.
Does a taxi clearance allow entry onto the runway?
A taxi clearance to a runway does not by itself authorise an aircraft to cross the holding position or enter the runway.
At a controlled airport, wait for an explicit clearance to cross, line up, take off or otherwise enter. Stop before the holding-position marking, not with the nose or main wheels over it. After landing, the entire aircraft must pass beyond the applicable holding-position marking before it is clear of the runway.
At a non-towered aerodrome, no controller issues that clearance. The pilot must check the approach and runway, account for other traffic, and follow the applicable local radio and right-of-way procedures. A radio call announces an intention; it does not create priority or guarantee that the runway is clear.
Who controls the runway, taxiway and apron?
At a controlled airport, tower or local control normally handles runway use, ground control commonly manages taxiway movement, and apron operations may be handled by ground, a dedicated apron or ramp controller, the airport operator, or local procedures.
The visible pavement boundary does not necessarily mark the limit of a controller's responsibility. Control may change at a published point, and some aprons contain controlled taxi routes even when the surrounding parking area is managed separately.
National terminology also differs. In some systems an apron is part of the movement area; in others parking ramps are described as non-movement areas. Pilots should rely on the aerodrome chart, markings, frequency instructions and local procedures rather than assuming that every apron is uncontrolled.
Is an apron the same as a ramp or tarmac?
Apron and ramp usually refer to the same operational area, although apron is the formal term used widely in international aviation and ramp is especially common in North America.
Tarmac is an informal expression rather than a precise airport-area name. A runway, taxiway or apron may be surfaced with asphalt, concrete, grass, gravel or another suitable material, so calling every paved airport area “the tarmac” does not identify its function.
How should you use runways, taxiways and aprons in a flight simulator?
The real-world distinction applies in Aviation & Real-World Flying and major flight simulators, although scenery, ATC routing and navigation data do not always represent the same airport layout.
- Start on the apron: Select the assigned gate, remote stand or parking position. Obtain any simulated pushback or start approval required by the airport and ATC system.
- Confirm the taxi route: Read the airport diagram and identify each taxiway in sequence. Do not rely solely on a taxi ribbon or moving-map line.
- Follow designated centrelines: Use stand lead-in lines, apron taxilanes and yellow taxiway centrelines instead of cutting across open pavement.
- Hold short of the runway: Stop before the solid side of the holding-position marking until authorised to cross, line up or take off.
- Vacate completely after landing: Leave by a suitable taxiway and move the whole aircraft beyond the holding-position marking before reporting or treating the runway as clear.

What mistakes cause the most confusion in a simulator?
- Following the widest pavement: Check the runway numbers, taxiway letters, marking colours and airport diagram instead.
- Entering after hearing “taxi to the runway”: Hold short until the simulator issues a separate runway entry, crossing, line-up or take-off clearance.
- Reporting clear too early: Move the tail and every part of the aircraft beyond the holding-position marking, not merely the cockpit.
- Cutting across the apron: Follow the marked taxilane and allow for wingspan. Many simulator collisions happen because the cockpit clears an object while a wingtip does not.
- Blindly following broken ATC routing: Directions through grass, buildings or disconnected pavement usually indicate a mismatch between the visual scenery and the simulator's ground-routing data. Verify the chart and signs, then use a physically valid route. In real aviation, stop and query ATC rather than improvising.
