Learn the runway vs taxiway vs apron difference, including their purposes, markings, lighting, ATC control and correct use on the ground.
A runway is the protected rectangular surface used for take-offs and landings; a taxiway connects runways with aprons, terminals and hangars; and an apron is the area where aircraft park, load, refuel and receive servicing. In Aviation & Real-World Flying, each area has different markings, lights, rules and hazards.
Runway, taxiway and apron compared
The simplest distinction is that a runway supports flight operations, a taxiway supports ground movement, and an apron supports parking and servicing.

These descriptions apply at most airports, but markings and control arrangements vary by country and airport. Small aerodromes may have grass runways, unmarked taxi routes or an apron that blends into the surrounding paved area, so pavement width alone is not a reliable guide.
How can you identify each area from the cockpit?
Runways normally use white markings, taxiways generally use yellow markings, and aprons are recognised by parking stands and ground-handling activity.
- Runway: Look for threshold markings, centreline dashes, edge lines and a number such as
09or27. Runway edge lights are mainly white; threshold lights appear green from the approach side, while runway-end lights show red. - Taxiway: Follow the continuous yellow centreline. Blue edge lights and green centreline lights may be installed, particularly at larger airports. Taxiway signs and letters identify the route.
- Apron: Look for gates, numbered stands, marshallers, jet bridges, baggage vehicles, fuel vehicles and stand lead-in markings. Apron lighting and paint schemes are less uniform than runway and taxiway systems.
A mistake we see constantly in flight simulators is following whichever strip of pavement looks widest. Use the airport diagram, signs and markings instead: a broad parallel taxiway can resemble a runway, while an apron taxilane may look like an ordinary taxiway.
Can an aircraft taxi on a runway or apron?
Yes. Taxiing is an activity rather than a restriction to taxiways, so aircraft commonly taxi across aprons and may taxi along a runway when authorised.
A normal departure begins at a stand on the apron, continues along an apron taxilane and one or more taxiways, then crosses the runway holding position. At airports without a suitable parallel taxiway, an aircraft may enter the runway and backtrack before taking off.
At a tower-controlled airport, an aircraft must not enter or cross a runway without the required ATC clearance. At a non-towered aerodrome there may be no controller to issue that clearance, but the pilot must still check for traffic and follow the applicable radio and right-of-way procedures.
Who controls the runway, taxiway and apron?
At a controlled airport, the tower normally controls runway use, ground control usually manages taxiways, and the apron may be managed by ground control, a separate ramp controller or local airport procedures.
The exact boundary varies. Some aprons are outside the ATC movement area, while others contain controlled taxiways or taxilanes. A handover between ground and tower also does not necessarily happen at the visible edge of the runway. The critical boundary is the runway holding position. Stop before its marking unless cleared to cross or enter at a controlled airport. After landing, the entire aircraft must pass beyond the holding-position marking before it is considered clear of the runway.
Is an apron the same as a ramp or tarmac?
Apron and ramp usually describe the same operational area, although apron is the formal term used widely in international aviation and ramp is especially common in North America.
Tarmac is an informal expression, not a precise airport-area designation. An apron, taxiway or runway may be surfaced with asphalt, concrete or another material. Using the distinction in flight simulators
The same operational distinction applies in MSFS, FSX, X-Plane and Prepar3D, but simulator ATC and airport data can simplify or misidentify ground routes.
- Start on the apron: Occupy the assigned gate, parking stand or remote stand and obtain any required pushback or start approval.
- Join the taxi route: Follow the cleared taxiways and yellow centrelines rather than cutting across empty apron space.
- Hold short of the runway: Stop before the holding-position marking until cleared to cross, line up or take off. At a simulated non-towered field, check the runway and traffic yourself.
- Vacate after landing: Leave by a suitable taxiway, move the whole aircraft beyond the holding-position marking, then continue to the assigned apron stand.
If ATC directs you across grass, through buildings or onto a disconnected path, the airport scenery and navigation data may represent different layouts.
