Why is my Saitek yoke not working in a flight simulator?

A Saitek yoke usually fails in PC flight simulators because Windows has not detected it, the simulator lacks an active yoke profile, its aileron and elevator axes are bound incorrectly, or another controller is overriding them. Test the yoke in Windows first; this separates a USB or driver fault from a simulator configuration problem.

Saitek Pro Flight hardware is also sold under the Logitech G name, so Windows and the simulator may identify the same yoke as either Saitek or Logitech.

How can I tell whether the yoke or simulator is at fault?

If the axes and buttons respond in Windows Game Controllers, the yoke hardware and USB connection are working; the problem is inside the simulator.

  1. Connect the yoke directly: close the simulator, disconnect other flight controls and plug the yoke directly into the PC rather than an unpowered hub or extension cable. Try another port, including a USB 2.0 port if available, because older units can be fussy about certain USB controllers.
  2. Open the Windows test panel: press Windows key and R, enter joy.cpl, select the Saitek or Logitech yoke and open its properties. Move the yoke fully left, right, forward and back, then press several buttons.
  3. Check Device Manager if it is absent: unplug and reconnect the yoke while watching for a new Human Interface Device or an unknown USB device. Restart Windows and install the correct Logitech G or Saitek software for the exact model if Windows cannot configure it through standard controller support. Avoid stacking old Saitek and newer Logitech utilities.
  4. Test another computer: if the yoke is not detected on a second PC either, the fixed USB cable, internal controller board or power circuitry is probably faulty.

Why does the yoke work in Windows but not in the simulator?

A yoke that passes the Windows test but does nothing in the aircraft normally has a blank, inactive or incorrect controller profile.

  1. Select the yoke itself in the simulator's controls screen rather than editing the keyboard, gamepad or throttle profile.
  2. Show all available controls rather than only assigned commands. Some simulators also store different profiles for individual aircraft.
  3. Assign analogue axes for roll and pitch. A mistake we see constantly is assigning the yoke to button-style commands such as Aileron Left and Elevator Up instead of the continuous axis controls.
  4. Remove duplicate assignments from gamepads, joysticks and throttle mini-sticks. Two devices commanding the same axis can make the controls freeze, jump or return to another position.
  5. Test with a default light aircraft in a ready-to-fly state. Turn off the autopilot and AI piloting assistance, and release any control or gust lock fitted to the aircraft.

When an MSFS profile is corrupted or full of conflicting assignments, it is often quicker to clear and rebuild the MSFS controller bindings than to repair them one command at a time.

Which axes should I assign to a Saitek yoke?

The yoke should use continuous axis assignments, while its switches and push-buttons should use ordinary commands.

If an axis moves in the wrong direction, use the simulator's reverse-axis option. Do not compensate by crossing the left and right commands. If the yoke works but only the quadrant fails, follow our separate throttle and quadrant troubleshooting checks.

Why is the Saitek yoke drifting or not reaching full travel?

Drift, jitter, an off-centre position or incomplete travel usually points to calibration, a noisy potentiometer or conflicting axis assignments rather than a missing driver.

Run the Windows calibration with the yoke centred at the requested stage, then move every axis through its full range. Confirm the results in the test panel before changing simulator sensitivity. Use only a small dead zone to suppress movement around the centre. A large dead zone makes the aircraft feel unresponsive, while sensitivity adjustments cannot restore an axis that is missing in joy.cpl.

Why does the yoke disconnect during a flight?

A yoke that works initially and then disappears usually has a marginal USB connection, insufficient hub power or Windows USB power management suspending the device.

  • Use a direct motherboard USB port and remove unnecessary hubs, extension leads and adapters while testing.
  • In Windows power settings, temporarily disable USB selective suspend. Where available in Device Manager, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device for the relevant USB hub as a diagnostic step.
  • Do not repeatedly unplug the yoke while the simulator is running; some simulators initialise controllers only at launch or do not recover every assignment after reconnection.
  • The optional power input on yokes with an integrated USB hub is primarily for accessories attached to that hub. It does not replace the yoke's own USB data connection.

When is it a hardware or compatibility problem?

The fault is probably physical when the yoke fails on multiple computers, disconnects when its cable is moved, or one axis remains dead in the Windows test after calibration.

If the buttons work but a single axis does not, suspect that axis's sensor or internal wiring. If every axis and button disappears together, concentrate on the USB cable, port, power and controller electronics.

The standard Saitek or Logitech Pro Flight Yoke is principally a Windows PC controller. A USB plug alone does not make it compatible with Xbox or PlayStation versions of a simulator; console editions accept only hardware specifically supported for that platform.

On systems supplied with the bundled throttle quadrant, its round connector plugs into the matching socket on the yoke. It is not a normal keyboard or mouse PS/2 connector and should not be inserted into a computer's legacy PS/2 port. Separately sold USB quadrants connect directly to the PC instead.
