Why is my Saitek/Logitech yoke not recognised in MSFS?

A Saitek or Logitech yoke is usually not recognised in Microsoft Flight Simulator because Windows has lost the USB device, the connection is unstable, MSFS created an empty or incorrect control preset, or another input layer is intercepting it. Confirm Windows detection first, then repair the USB connection or rebuild the MSFS bindings.

This applies to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, although their Controls screens differ. The Saitek Pro Flight Yoke may appear under its later name, Logitech G Flight Yoke System, or occasionally as a generic USB controller.

How can I tell whether Windows or MSFS is at fault?

If the yoke does not respond in Windows Game Controllers, MSFS cannot detect it. Checking Windows first avoids reinstalling the simulator for a USB, driver or hardware fault that MSFS cannot repair.

  1. Close Microsoft Flight Simulator. Connect the yoke before restarting it because hot-plug detection is not always reliable.
  2. Disconnect other flight hardware. Temporarily remove pedals, panels, extension leads, unpowered hubs and accessories attached to the yoke's built-in USB hub.
  3. Use a direct USB connection. Try another port on the computer, preferably a rear motherboard port on a desktop. Older hardware may behave differently between USB ports, but allow Windows to finish detecting it before moving it again; rapid port changes can create duplicate device entries.
  4. Open the Windows controller test. Press Windows key and R, enter joy.cpl, select the yoke and open its properties. Test pitch, roll, buttons and the throttle-quadrant levers.
  5. Repair the device entry. If the yoke is absent or appears as an unknown USB device, find only the matching entry in Device Manager, uninstall that device, unplug the yoke, restart Windows and reconnect it. Do not remove every Human Interface Device or USB host controller because those categories include other essential hardware.
  6. Repair the correct driver if required. Use the Logitech or Saitek Windows driver intended for the exact yoke model and Windows edition. Avoid stacking old Saitek software, newer Logitech packages and third-party controller drivers for the same device.
  7. Check USB power management. If the yoke appears initially and later vanishes, prevent Windows from turning off the relevant USB hub and test with USB selective suspend disabled where that option is available.

Do I need Logitech software for the yoke?

You do not always need Logitech profiling software if Windows already exposes the yoke as a working game controller. Software intended for separate switch, radio or instrument panels does not make the yoke's pitch and roll axes work.

If Windows sees the device but inputs fail, use the appropriate model-specific driver and temporarily remove obsolete profiling software. Also close controller remappers and virtual-joystick tools while testing.

What if MSFS sees the yoke but no controls work?

A yoke that works in joy.cpl but not in the aircraft normally needs a fresh MSFS control preset with the analogue axes assigned correctly.

  1. Select the yoke itself. On the Controls screen, choose the Saitek, Logitech or generic USB device tab rather than editing the keyboard, mouse or gamepad preset.
  2. Show all commands. An Assigned-only filter can make an empty preset look as though the yoke has no available controls.
  3. Create a fresh custom preset. Do not overwrite the suspect one until its replacement works. Confirm that the intended preset is active, including any aircraft-specific profile.
  4. Bind continuous axes. Assign roll to Ailerons Axis and pitch to Elevator Axis, or the equivalent entries containing Axis. Do not use the separate left, right, up or down commands intended for keys and buttons.
  5. Assign the throttle quadrant. Bind its levers to the appropriate throttle, propeller or mixture axes for the aircraft.
  6. Remove duplicate inputs. Clear pitch and roll axes from unused gamepads, joysticks and virtual controllers. Opposing inputs can cause twitching, recentring or apparently dead controls.
  7. Save and test simply. Use a default light aircraft with autopilot and AI piloting disabled. Check the cockpit controls or external control surfaces, add other peripherals back one at a time, and enable Reverse Axis only when a control moves in the wrong direction.

Corrupted presets and duplicate assignments can survive an ordinary restart. If every new assignment still behaves incorrectly, follow our procedure for clearing and rebuilding MSFS controller bindings rather than reinstalling the simulator.

Why is the throttle quadrant missing?

A quadrant supplied with many Saitek or Logitech yokes connects to the yoke base through a round plug and normally appears as extra axes under the yoke, not as a separate controller. A standalone USB quadrant usually has its own Windows and MSFS device entry.

Seat the connector before powering or connecting the yoke, then check the throttle, propeller and mixture movements in joy.cpl. If those axes work in Windows, they only need assigning in the active MSFS preset.

Why does the yoke disconnect or produce jumping axes?

Intermittent detection usually indicates USB power, a poor connection or failing hardware rather than an MSFS profile.

  • Connect the yoke directly and avoid placing pedals, panels and other demanding devices on the same unpowered hub.
  • The optional power input on many Saitek yokes powers accessories attached to the built-in USB hub; the yoke itself normally operates through its main USB cable.
  • If disconnects follow a period of inactivity, test with USB selective suspend disabled or prevent Windows from turning off the relevant hub.
  • If the connection remains stable but an axis flickers, reset or calibrate it through Windows Game Controllers where available. Apply a small MSFS dead zone only after Windows reports the movement correctly.
  • A dead zone can mask minor centre jitter. It cannot repair full-scale spikes, repeated disconnects or a damaged cable.

When should I suspect a yoke hardware fault?

Hardware is the likely cause when the yoke remains absent from joy.cpl through several direct USB ports and on a second Windows PC. Disconnects when the cable moves, several buttons failing together, or an axis stuck at one value after recalibration also point to a physical fault.

If Windows receives every movement correctly but one aircraft ignores the yoke, the hardware is working. Recheck that aircraft's active preset, assistance settings, duplicate bindings and autopilot state.

Does the Saitek yoke work with MSFS on Xbox or PlayStation?

The standard Saitek Pro Flight Yoke and Logitech G Flight Yoke System are Windows PC peripherals, not native Xbox or PlayStation controllers. A PC-only USB yoke cannot be made console-compatible through an MSFS binding change or Windows driver; console editions require hardware explicitly approved for that particular platform.
