How do I connect and assign the X52 in FSX?

The reliable method is to test the X52 in Windows first, then configure its axes directly inside FSX without an active software profile.

  1. Connect the hardware: connect the stick to the throttle unit, then connect the throttle's USB cable to the PC. If you need to reseat the inter-unit cable, disconnect USB power first.
  2. Test it in Windows: press Windows key + R, enter joy.cpl, select the X52 and open its properties. Move the stick, twist grip and throttle through their full ranges. Test and, where available, calibrate the device using our Windows X52 calibration procedure.
  3. Open FSX controls: start FSX, open Settings and then Controls. Make sure controllers are enabled and select the X52 from the controller list.
  4. Remove automatic assignments: inspect the Control Axes list and delete incorrect or duplicate mappings. FSX commonly assigns one physical axis to several functions, particularly throttle, mixture, propeller or spoilers.
  5. Assign the main axes: select each FSX axis command, choose the assignment option and move only the intended X52 control. Use axis commands rather than throttle, rudder or aileron keyboard commands.
  6. Check direction: load a simple default aircraft and move each control slowly. Use the Reverse option only if that particular axis moves in the wrong direction.

Test with a default FSX aircraft before using a complex add-on. That separates a controller problem from an aircraft-specific control or calibration system.

Which X52 axes should I assign?

Assign only the four primary flight-control axes initially; optional rotaries and sliders can be added after the basic setup works.

If separate rudder pedals are connected, assign the pedals to the rudder axis and remove the X52 twist assignment. Do not leave both active unless you deliberately lock the twist grip and have confirmed it produces no input.

The X52 throttle detents do not automatically create reverse-thrust or afterburner ranges in stock FSX. They remain positions on the normal throttle axis unless the aircraft or a separate profile gives them another function.

What sensitivity and null-zone settings work best?

Start with high sensitivity and the smallest null zone that keeps each control steady when released.

A mistake we see constantly is reducing sensitivity to compensate for abrupt flying. In FSX, very low sensitivity can restrict useful control response. Keep the primary axes near full sensitivity, use smooth physical inputs, and add null zone only to suppress centre noise.

Which X52 buttons are most useful in FSX?

The most useful button layout keeps frequently used flight controls under one hand without duplicating existing assignments.

  • Use the main POV hat for cockpit or external view movement.
  • Assign a four-way hat or two buttons to elevator trim up and down.
  • Use separate buttons for flaps extend and retract.
  • Assign convenient buttons to landing gear, wheel brakes and autopilot disconnect.
  • Keep less urgent functions, such as lights and doors, on the keyboard until the main layout is proven.

Should I use an X52 software profile?

Direct FSX assignments are simpler and less prone to double inputs, so we recommend starting without an active X52 profile.

Use the profiling software only when you need mode layers, macros or keyboard emulation. FSX does not turn the X52 mode selector into three independent assignment layers by itself. If a profile makes a button send a keyboard command, remove that button's equivalent FSX joystick binding or one press may trigger the function twice.

The throttle's clutch button may be reserved by the X52 software and therefore unavailable in FSX. Disable the clutch function in the device settings, if that option is present, or use another button.

Why is the X52 throttle or rudder not working?

Missing or erratic X52 controls usually result from Windows detection, duplicate FSX assignments, reversed axes or profile conflicts.

  • The X52 is absent from FSX: close FSX, verify the device in joy.cpl, reconnect it directly to the PC if possible, and then restart the simulator.
  • One movement controls two functions: inspect every X52 axis assignment and any connected gamepad, yoke or pedal set. Delete duplicate mappings.
  • The throttle runs backwards: reverse only the throttle axis. If it still jumps, clear any second throttle, mixture or spoiler assignment.
  • The rudder drifts: recalibrate the twist axis and increase its null zone slightly. Disable FSX Auto-rudder when using the twist grip or pedals.
  • Buttons trigger twice: remove either the FSX button assignment or the keyboard command generated by the X52 profile.
  • Rotaries cause flickering controls: remove their assignments unless calibration produces a stable signal; ageing X52 rotaries can generate noisy input.
