How do I set up a joystick in FSX step by step?
The reliable order is Windows detection first, FSX axis assignment second, then calibration and a live control check.
- Connect the joystick before opening FSX. Use a direct USB port if possible and keep using the same port. FSX does not always handle controllers connected after the simulator has started.
- Test it in Windows. Open the Windows Game Controllers panel, select the joystick and check that every axis and button responds. Calibrate it there if needed. Our PC joystick connection and calibration sequence covers this stage in detail.
- Open the FSX control settings. From the opening screen, choose Settings and then Controls. During a flight, use Options > Settings > Controls. Make sure Enable Controllers is selected.
- Select the correct device. Choose the joystick from the Controller Type list. Open the Control Axes tab and use the normal flight-control assignment list rather than Slew Mode, where that selector is shown.
- Assign each analogue axis. Use the new or change assignment control, move only the intended axis, and confirm the detected input. Assign the stick to
Aileron AxisandElevator Axis, a twist grip toRudder Axis, and the throttle lever or slider toThrottle Axis. - Remove duplicate assignments. FSX often creates automatic mappings for every connected gamepad, yoke, pedal set or throttle. Check each device in the Controller Type list and delete unwanted duplicates. One physical movement should operate only one flight-control axis.
- Tune the axes. Open the calibration or axis-tuning area. Begin with high sensitivity and a low null zone, then increase the null zone only enough to stop centre drift.
- Test in a simple aircraft. Load a default light aircraft on the ground, move every control slowly and compare the cockpit controls or external control surfaces with the joystick. Correct any reversed axis before take-off.
The procedure is essentially the same in boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition. Steam Edition can also display a virtual gamepad if Steam Input is active; if both the physical joystick and a virtual copy appear, map only one of them.
Which joystick axes and buttons should I assign?
A basic FSX joystick needs aileron and elevator axes, plus throttle and rudder where the hardware provides them.

- Elevator trim nose-up and nose-down
- Wheel brakes
- Flaps up and down by one increment
- Landing gear
- View reset or view change

If the joystick has a twist axis, assign it to rudder and turn off Autorudder in the realism settings. If there is no twist grip or pedal set, Autorudder is a reasonable temporary substitute.
What sensitivity and null zone should I use in FSX?
Most healthy joysticks work best in FSX with sensitivity set high and the null zone kept close to minimum.
- Aileron and elevator: Start with sensitivity at or near maximum. Add only a small central null zone if the aircraft rolls or pitches while the stick is physically centred.
- Rudder twist: Use high sensitivity, but allow a slightly larger null zone if the spring-centred twist grip is worn or noisy.
- Throttle: Use high sensitivity and a minimal null zone. If power decreases when the lever moves forward, select Reverse for that axis.
FSX sensitivity is not a modern response-curve editor. Lowering it heavily can reduce effective control travel rather than merely softening movement around the centre. For an aircraft that feels twitchy, first recalibrate the stick, check for duplicate axes and make small inputs before cutting sensitivity.
Why does the joystick still not work properly?
Most FSX joystick faults come from disabled controllers, incorrect event types, reversed axes, poor calibration or duplicate automatic assignments.
- FSX does not detect the joystick: Close FSX, reconnect the device, verify it in Windows and restart the simulator. Confirm that controllers are enabled and the correct device is selected.
- The stick works in menus but not in flight: Make sure it is assigned to events ending in
Axis. Digital commands such as elevator up or throttle increase are button commands, not analogue-axis assignments. - The aircraft moves in the wrong direction: Use the Reverse option only on the affected axis.
- Controls twitch or fight each other: Inspect every connected device for duplicate elevator, aileron, rudder or throttle assignments. Gamepads are frequent culprits.
- The aircraft drifts with the stick centred: Recalibrate first, then increase the null zone for that axis one small step at a time.
- An axis reaches full movement too early: Check its Windows calibration and restore high FSX sensitivity before judging the hardware faulty.
- Assignments disappear after reconnecting: Return the joystick to its usual USB port. Windows can sometimes present it to FSX as a different device after a port or driver change.
