How do I set up a joystick in FSX step by step?

The dependable setup order is Windows detection, FSX axis assignment, duplicate removal, calibration and an in-cockpit control check.

  1. Connect the joystick before starting FSX. For initial fault-finding, use a direct USB port rather than a hub. Returning the controller to the same port also reduces the chance of Windows presenting it to FSX as a different device later.
  2. Test the controller in Windows. Press the Windows key and R, enter joy.cpl, and open the Game Controllers panel. Select the joystick, open its properties and confirm that the stick, twist grip, throttle and buttons respond. If Windows cannot see an axis, FSX cannot assign it.
  3. Open the FSX controller settings. From the opening screen, select Settings and then Controls. During a flight, reveal the menu bar if necessary and use Options > Settings > Controls. Make sure Enable Controller(s) is selected.
  4. Select the correct device. Choose the joystick in the Controller Type list, then open Control Axes. Where FSX offers separate assignment lists, select Normal, not Slew Mode.
  5. Assign each analogue control. Select the required event, use the assignment control and move only the intended stick axis or lever. Bind left-right movement to Aileron Axis, forward-back movement to Elevator Axis, twist or pedals to Rudder Axis, and the throttle lever to Throttle Axis.
  6. Delete automatic duplicates. Inspect every device in the Controller Type list, including gamepads and virtual controllers. A mistake we see constantly is the same rudder, throttle or elevator axis assigned on two devices, causing twitching or controls that fight each other.
  7. Calibrate and tune the axes. Start with high sensitivity and a low null zone. Increase a null zone only enough to stop an axis moving while its control is physically centred.
  8. Check the response before take-off. Load a simple default aircraft and move each control slowly through its full range. Watch the cockpit controls or external control surfaces, confirm that they move in the correct direction, and reverse only an axis that actually operates backwards.

If an assignment list offers both analogue and digital events, use the analogue version. For example, Elevator Axis belongs on the stick, while elevator-up and elevator-down commands are intended for keys or buttons. Which FSX joystick axes and buttons should I assign?

A basic FSX joystick needs aileron and elevator axes, with rudder and throttle assigned when the hardware provides those controls.

Use the general Throttle Axis for one lever controlling all engines. The numbered engine-throttle axes are for separate levers; assigning a basic joystick slider to only one of them can leave the other engines unresponsive.

  • Wheel brakes
  • Flaps up and down by one increment
  • Landing gear
  • View reset or view change

If the stick has a working twist axis, assign it to rudder and disable Autorudder in the realism settings. If the joystick has no twist grip and no pedals are connected, Autorudder is a practical temporary substitute.

What joystick sensitivity and null zone should I use in FSX?

Most properly calibrated joysticks work best in FSX with sensitivity high and the null zone at or close to minimum.

There is no single best slider percentage because centre wear and axis travel differ between controllers. FSX sensitivity is not a modern response-curve setting: reducing it heavily can prevent the simulated control from reaching full travel rather than merely making the centre less twitchy.

If an aircraft feels too sensitive, first verify calibration, remove duplicate assignments and check that the aircraft is correctly trimmed. Use only a modest sensitivity reduction after those checks.

How do I set up a PXN-2113 joystick in FSX?

A PXN-2113 is configured through the same Windows and FSX axis-assignment process as another PC joystick; it does not require a special FSX profile to provide basic flight controls.

  1. Confirm Windows detection with joy.cpl. The displayed device name may use different spacing or a generic controller description, so identify it by moving the controls in its properties panel.
  2. Check every available axis. Verify that stick movement, throttle and any twist control appear as separate inputs. If the hardware or its software offers different controller modes, use one that Windows recognises as a joystick with analogue axes; mode names can vary.
  3. Assign the axes manually in FSX. Do not rely on an automatic preset. Move one control at a time and bind it to the matching Axis event.
  4. Remove duplicate virtual mappings. If FSX lists both the PXN-2113 and a virtual or gamepad-style copy, assign flight axes on only one of them.

If buttons respond but the stick and throttle do not move in the Windows test panel, the problem is below FSX level. Reconnecting the controller, changing its hardware mode where available, or correcting its Windows installation must come before assigning controls in the simulator.

Why does my FSX joystick still not work properly?

Most remaining FSX controller problems are caused by a missing Windows device, the wrong command type, a reversed axis, poor calibration or duplicate assignments.

  • The joystick is absent from FSX: Close the simulator, reconnect the device, verify it with joy.cpl, then restart FSX. A controller connected after launch may not be detected reliably.
  • I did not find the Control Axes menu: Open Settings > Controls from the main screen, or Options > Settings > Controls during a flight, then select the Control Axes tab. If the in-flight menu bar is hidden, press Alt to reveal it.
  • Buttons work but stick movement does nothing: Replace digital commands such as aileron-left or elevator-up with the corresponding events ending in Axis.
  • An axis moves backwards: Select Reverse for that axis only. Do not reverse every axis to compensate for one incorrect control.
  • Controls twitch or fight each other: Check every listed joystick, gamepad, yoke, pedal set and virtual controller for duplicate axis assignments.
  • The throttle affects only one engine: Replace a numbered per-engine throttle assignment with the general Throttle Axis, unless separate levers are intended.
  • Assignments disappear after reconnecting: Use the controller’s usual USB port and check whether Windows has created another device identity.
  • The aircraft drifts with the stick centred: Recalibrate first, then increase only that axis’s null zone in small steps.

A steady turn or yaw is not always a joystick fault. Propeller torque, P-factor, wind, aircraft rigging and poor trim can all produce movement even when the controls are centred. Use our FSX drift, reversal and right-pull checks to separate a mis-centred controller from normal aircraft behaviour.

FSX’s built-in controls are sufficient for most joysticks.
