To set up a Thrustmaster TCA Airbus joystick in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, connect it before launching the simulator, confirm it works in Windows, then assign X to ailerons, Y to elevator, twist to rudder and the slider to throttle. Remove duplicate assignments, calibrate, and tune sensitivity and null zones.
Prepare the TCA sidestick before starting FSX
The sidestick must report clean, centred axes in Windows before FSX can use it correctly. If your model has a platform selector, choose PC before connecting it. Unlock the twist rudder unless you intend to use separate pedals.
Connect the joystick directly to the PC where possible, then press the Windows key, run joy.cpl and open the device properties. FSX can use the physical joystick directly, so configuration or virtual-controller software is not required for a basic setup. If such software is running, make sure FSX is not receiving both the physical device and a virtual copy of it.
What axes should the Airbus joystick use in FSX?
FSX needs one, and only one, assignment for each flight-control axis.
- Open the controls menu. Start FSX, open
Settings, selectControlsand choose the Thrustmaster sidestick from the controller drop-down list. Ensure controllers are enabled. - Inspect existing mappings. Open the
Control Axestab and remove incorrect automatic assignments. FSX often assigns sliders or twist axes to unrelated controls. - Assign each axis separately. Double-click the required assignment and move only the intended control. Avoid touching the slider or twisting the grip while FSX is detecting X or Y.
- Check every connected controller. Delete duplicate aileron, elevator, rudder or throttle assignments from unused gamepads, pedals and virtual devices.
- Test the direction. Apply the
Reverseoption only when the cockpit control moves opposite to the physical input.

How should sensitivity and null zones be set?
High sensitivity and small null zones are the right starting point for the TCA sidestick in FSX.
- Set the aileron and elevator sensitivity high, normally at or near maximum, so the aircraft can reach full control deflection.
- Keep the X and Y null zones close to minimum unless the controls drift around the centre.
- Give the twist rudder a slightly larger null zone if small hand movements cause unwanted yaw.
- Keep the throttle null zone minimal so the slider retains its useful travel.
Reducing FSX sensitivity does not create a sophisticated response curve; it can make the control sluggish and prevent full deflection. How do reverse thrust and Airbus throttle detents work in FSX?
Stock FSX does not automatically recognise Airbus idle, climb, flex or take-off detents from the sidestick's small throttle control.
Use the slider as a normal full-range throttle axis. If the sidestick's reverse mechanism appears as a button, assign that button to the FSX command that decreases throttle into reverse; otherwise bring the throttle to idle and hold F2. Do not reverse the entire throttle axis merely to enable reverse thrust—the Reverse tick box is only for correcting an axis moving in the wrong direction.
Some detailed Airbus add-ons provide their own throttle calibration or detent system. Configure that only after the Windows input is correct, and avoid sending the same throttle through both an FSX assignment and a separate add-on input system.
Which joystick buttons are useful in FSX?
The most useful sidestick button assignments are view panning, elevator trim, brakes and frequently used cockpit controls.
- Assign the hat switch to the directional pan-view commands.
- Put elevator trim up and down on two buttons that can be reached without releasing the stick.
- Use another accessible button for wheel brakes or push-to-talk if required.
- Avoid assigning the same button in both FSX and external controller software.

Why is the Thrustmaster Airbus joystick not working correctly?
Most TCA sidestick problems in FSX come from duplicate assignments, reversed axes or an input fault already visible in Windows.
- FSX does not list the joystick: connect it before starting FSX, confirm that it appears in
joy.cpl, and verify that controllers are enabled in the FSX controls menu. - The aircraft rolls or yaws by itself: look for a duplicate axis on another device, then add only enough null zone to stop genuine centre jitter.
- Controls move backwards: change the
Reversesetting for that individual axis rather than swapping unrelated assignments. - The throttle jumps or will not reach full power: remove duplicate throttle mappings and confirm that the Windows test shows the slider's complete range.
- Rudder input is missing: unlock the physical twist mechanism, or use pedals and remove the joystick rudder assignment.
- Settings work in one aircraft but not another: FSX assignments are normally global, but a complex add-on may intercept axes or require calibration through its own controls.
Make changes one device at a time and retest with a default FSX aircraft. That separates a basic controller fault from aircraft-specific control logic.
