Small airports usually lack passenger jetways because the equipment, terminal structure and maintenance cost are hard to justify for limited traffic. Their aircraft may also be too small or varied for reliable bridge alignment. Ground-level boarding by stairs or a short walk is cheaper, quicker and often operationally simpler.

What makes a passenger jetway too expensive?
The bridge is only one part of a complete gate system, and low use makes that entire system difficult to justify.
- Terminal construction: A passenger boarding bridge normally needs an elevated gate area, a suitable terminal opening, structural foundations and protected access from the departure lounge.
- Apron design: The stand needs enough room for the bridge's swept path, aircraft stop positions and safe clearance from wings, engines, propellers and ground vehicles.
- Maintenance: Drive, elevation, cab-control, sensor, interlock, tyre and weather-sealing systems require inspection and repair. A failed bridge can also make its gate unusable until stairs are brought in.
- Low utilisation: A bridge used for only a few movements each day still carries construction, maintenance, training and insurance costs.
- Reduced flexibility: A fixed gate is designed around particular door positions. An open apron can accommodate several aircraft sizes by changing parking marks and bringing the appropriate stairs or ramp.
The common mistake is to consider only the moving bridge. The terminal interface, stand geometry and long-term upkeep often matter more than the equipment itself. Some bridges also carry optional ground power or pre-conditioned air connections, adding capability but also cost.

Can small aircraft use passenger jetways?
Some small aircraft can use a passenger boarding bridge, but the bridge's movement range and the aircraft's door geometry must match.
Compatibility depends on door height, door position, wing and engine clearance, the bridge floor slope and the aircraft's parking position. Many regional jets can use suitable bridges. Some larger turboprops can as well, but low doors, integral stairs, rear-door locations or propeller clearance may make mobile boarding equipment more practical.

How do passengers board safely without a jetway?
Airports without jetways use controlled apron routes and boarding equipment selected for the aircraft and stand.
- Integral airstairs fold out from the aircraft door and need little airport equipment.
- Mobile stairs can be adjusted for different door heights and moved between stands.
- Boarding ramps provide a gentler route where the aircraft type, available space and permitted ramp gradient allow one.
- Marked walking routes take passengers directly between a nearby terminal door and the aircraft under staff supervision.
- Passenger buses serve remote stands where walking across the apron would be impractical.
Apron boarding is not inherently unsafe. Ground staff control passenger movement, keep routes clear of vehicles and ensure engines or propellers affecting the boarding area are not operating. Local procedures vary with the airport layout and aircraft type.
What about passengers with reduced mobility?
Lack of a jetway does not remove the need to assist passengers who cannot use stairs. Depending on the jurisdiction and aircraft, an airport or airline may use an accessible boarding ramp, passenger lift or other approved transfer equipment.
This provision needs planning. A mobile lift may take longer to position, and not every small aircraft door or apron stand can accept the same equipment. Passengers are therefore often asked to notify the airline before travel, although the exact assistance rules differ by country.
Are jetways always faster than stairs?
Jetways are not always the fastest boarding method, especially for small aircraft carrying relatively few passengers.
A bridge generally boards through one door and takes time to position. Apron boarding may use both front and rear doors, allowing passengers to enter or leave more quickly. At a compact airport, the walk from aircraft to terminal can also be shorter than the route through an elevated gate corridor.
The bridge's main advantages are shelter from rain, snow, heat and wind, easier level access, and tighter separation between arriving and departing passengers. Airports weigh those benefits against cost and stand flexibility rather than assuming a jetway improves every turnaround.
Why do some small airports still have jetways?
A small airport may install one or two jetways when regular passenger demand, climate or airline requirements provide enough operational value.
Common reasons include a frequent regional-jet schedule, harsh weather, a terminal designed for elevated gates, accessibility priorities or funding tied to a wider terminal project. This is why two airports with similar passenger numbers may use completely different boarding arrangements.
