Where is KDFW, and what should flight sim pilots know?

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (IATA: DFW, ICAO: KDFW) lies between Dallas and Fort Worth in north Texas, about 18 miles northwest of central Dallas and 21 miles northeast of central Fort Worth. Flight sim pilots should expect seven runways, five terminals, dense Class B traffic and lengthy taxi routes.

Where exactly is KDFW?

KDFW spans Dallas and Tarrant counties at approximately 32.90° N, 97.04° W, with a published airport elevation of about 607 feet above mean sea level. It sits in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex rather than within either city centre.

Match their revision date to your simulator's navigation database where possible. Which KDFW runways and approaches should I expect?

KDFW has two western parallels numbered 18/36, three eastern parallels numbered 17/35 and a pair of diagonal 13/31 runways.

With a southerly wind, operations generally favour the 17 and 18 directions; northerly winds favour 35 and 36. Actual runway allocation also depends on traffic, closures and terminal routing. Online controllers may operate several arrival and departure runways at once, while built-in simulator ATC often uses a simplified flow.

A mistake we see constantly is assuming that every runway is roughly identical because most are long. Runway lengths differ, and the shorter runway options can materially affect a heavy or hot-weather departure. Run the aircraft's take-off or landing performance calculation for the assigned runway rather than copying figures from another parallel.

Approach selection and parallel-runway traps

KDFW provides numerous ILS and RNAV procedures, but the exact procedure must match the runway, transition and navigation cycle loaded in the aircraft. Where an FMS lists approach suffixes such as Y or Z, those are distinct procedures rather than interchangeable versions of the same approach.

Verify the localiser identifier, frequency, inbound course and runway suffix before final approach. Capturing guidance for an adjacent parallel can produce a stable-looking approach to the wrong runway. If simulator ATC changes the runway late, rebuild and check the approach instead of merely changing the runway field in the FMS.

How should I plan a realistic KDFW flight?

Plan a KDFW flight around the expected runway flow, a compatible SID or STAR, aircraft performance and the intended terminal side.

  1. Confirm the airport: Use KDFW, not KDAL, and verify that the aircraft starts at the intended gate rather than on an active runway.
  2. Check weather and runway flow: North Texas can produce high temperatures, thunderstorms, gust fronts and strong frontal winds. Airport elevation is modest, but summer heat still increases density altitude and take-off distance.
  3. Load matching procedures: Select a departure or arrival appropriate to the route and clearance. A STAR normally feeds the terminal area; it does not automatically replace the separate approach procedure or ATC vectors to final.
  4. Resolve database differences: If a waypoint, transition or approach shown on the chart is absent from the FMS, the chart and navigation database may use different cycles. Do not splice together incompatible procedures without checking every fix and constraint.
  5. Allow taxi fuel and time: A runway on the opposite side of the airport can mean a long ground route. Do not plan fuel as though the aircraft will depart beside its gate.
  6. Choose parking before descent: Terminal A, C and E gates are on the east side of the central road system; B and D are on the west. Airline and gate assignments vary between real operations and simulator scenery.

KDFW taxi and gate planning

The safest way to avoid getting lost at KDFW is to brief the likely runway exit, terminal side and first few taxiways before landing. Trying to interpret the entire airport diagram while rolling at high speed is where missed turns and runway incursions begin.

Some routes use perimeter or end-around taxiways to reduce active-runway crossings. Follow the airport diagram rather than assuming every paved route is available: older scenery may omit a taxiway, use obsolete labels or depict service roads that are not valid aircraft routes.

  • Vacate beyond the runway holding-position marking before stopping.
  • Do not cross another runway without the required clearance, even if the simulator's guidance arrows point across it.
  • Expect terminal assignments and gate numbers to differ between scenery packages.
  • If the assigned stand is unsuitable for the aircraft, choose another compatible stand on the same terminal side rather than forcing an impossible route.

Do I need a KDFW scenery add-on?

No add-on is required to fly KDFW, but improved scenery can provide more accurate terminals, signs, gates and taxiway geometry. Navigation data and visual scenery are separate, so installing an airport does not automatically update the procedures in the FMS.

Do not enable two airport replacements at once. Double terminals, overlapping jetways, sunken aprons and duplicated taxiway signs usually mean competing scenery packages.
