How do you spot and land on an unpaved runway?

In real-world aviation, spot an unpaved runway by matching its charted position, heading, dimensions and nearby landmarks—not by colour alone. Fly the published or local circuit, stabilise at the POH/AFM approach speed, inspect the surface when necessary, use the prescribed soft- or short-field technique, and go around if its identity or condition remains doubtful.

How can you identify an unpaved runway from the air?

Identify the strip by cross-checking several fixed clues rather than searching for a neat brown or green rectangle. Grass runways can disappear into adjoining fields, while dirt and gravel strips may resemble roads.

  1. Brief its position: note the coordinates, runway headings, length, width, elevation, slope, circuit direction and nearby obstacles before arrival. A GPS airport symbol normally marks a reference point, not the threshold.
  2. Build a visual picture: look for a windsock, edge cones, threshold markers, a consistently cleared strip, mowing lines, tyre tracks and gaps in trees or fences. Runway numbers and painted centreline markings may be absent.
  3. Confirm the alignment: compare the strip's direction with the charted runway heading and check both ends. Roads tend to curve, meet other roads and contain traffic; a runway normally has a consistent width and clear approach paths, although none of these clues is conclusive alone.

  5. Inspect only when appropriate: if local rules, traffic and aircraft limitations permit, an overhead observation or inspection pass may reveal animals, vehicles, standing water or major ruts. It cannot prove that apparently dry soil will support the aircraft, and an improvised low pass creates risks of its own.

If the runway cannot be positively identified, remain at a safe altitude and reposition. Do not descend merely because the GPS says the airport is underneath you.

What must you check before committing to land?

Before committing, confirm that the runway is open, suitable for the aircraft and long enough under the actual surface and weather conditions.

  • Status and permission: check official aeronautical information, applicable notices, local procedures and whether prior permission is required. A charted private strip is not an invitation to land.
  • Surface condition: obtain a reliable report when possible. Long or wet grass, mud, loose gravel, standing water, ruts and concealed holes may be difficult or impossible to assess from the air.
  • Performance: use the POH/AFM, approved supplements or operator data for weight, pressure altitude, temperature, wind, slope and surface. Do not apply a guessed percentage to paved-runway figures.
  • Wind: compare the windsock with reported conditions and the aircraft's limitations or operating guidance. Exposed strips can have strong crosswinds, while trees may produce turbulence and wind shear near the threshold.
  • Escape plan: know the go-around path, rising terrain, wires and the point by which the approach must be stable.

How should you land on grass, dirt or gravel?

Land using the aircraft manufacturer's procedure for the limiting condition, with accurate speed, a controlled touchdown and no unnecessary load on the nosewheel.

  1. Fly a stable final: select the prescribed flap setting and approach speed for the aircraft, weight and conditions. Adding arbitrary extra speed causes float and consumes valuable runway.
  2. Control the drift: remain aligned with the strip and remove sideways motion before touchdown. In a crosswind, use the approved crab or wing-low method; the crab-to-wing-low transition and drift-control technique is especially useful on narrow grass strips.
  3. Touch down deliberately: on a soft field, make a gentle main-wheel touchdown at the lowest speed consistent with control and keep the nosewheel light as prescribed. On a firm short field, the POH may call for a positive touchdown at a defined point rather than a prolonged float.
  4. Track the centreline: use rudder for directional control and maintain the appropriate aileron input into wind. If the edges are difficult to judge, these runway centreline sight-picture corrections address the usual causes of drift.
  5. Manage the rollout: progressively apply the elevator position specified for the surface and use braking only as conditions and the POH permit. Heavy braking can lock a wheel on grass or gravel, while letting the nosewheel drop onto soft ground increases drag and the risk of digging in.
  6. Taxi carefully: slow before turns, avoid suspect patches and minimise propeller blast over gravel. Do not perform a high-power run-up over loose stones if a safer firm area is available.

Short-field versus soft-field priorities

A short-field landing prioritises touching down at the planned point and stopping, while a soft-field landing prioritises a gentle touchdown, reduced nosewheel loading and continued momentum. Combining the two does not remove their conflicting demands.

If the runway is both short and soft, performance data must show that the landing and subsequent take-off are feasible under those conditions. A worked light-aircraft example of short-field speed, touchdown and braking illustrates the precision required, but the procedure for the aircraft being flown always takes priority.

When should you go around?

Go around whenever the runway, surface, traffic or approach is not unquestionably acceptable by the predetermined decision point.

  • The strip's identity or usable threshold remains uncertain.
  • People, animals, vehicles or another aircraft are on the runway.
  • The approach is high, fast, unstable or badly misaligned.
  • Crosswind or turbulence prevents controlled centreline tracking.
  • Standing water, deep ruts, soft patches or unexpected obstacles become visible.
  • The aircraft floats beyond the planned touchdown zone or begins an uncontrolled bounce.

Make the decision early. Once firmly on the ground, attempting to take off again may require more distance than stopping, particularly on wet grass or soft soil; follow the aircraft-specific procedure rather than assuming a late touch-and-go is safer.

Simulator visibility differences

In a flight simulator, an unpaved runway may be harder to spot because grass textures, seasonal colouring, shadows and terrain detail can hide its edges. Some scenery also places the airport reference point away from the threshold or depicts the strip differently from the chart.

Practise first in daylight and clear weather, approach from the charted circuit, and use heading and distance to predict where the runway should appear. If the strip only renders at close range or does not match the navigation data, treat that as a scenery discrepancy—do not compensate with a steep, unstable dive.
