What is terrain mesh, and how does it differ from scenery add-ons?

Terrain mesh is the elevation model that gives a flight simulator’s ground its three-dimensional shape—mountains, ridges, valleys and slopes. It is one type of scenery add-on, but unlike ground textures, landclass, autogen or airport scenery, it changes terrain geometry rather than primarily changing what is drawn on or placed above it.

Across FSX, Prepar3D, X-Plane and Microsoft Flight Simulator, the word scenery covers several different layers. Mesh is the layer responsible for elevation, although some scenery packages bundle mesh with textures, objects, airports or local terrain corrections.

What does terrain mesh change?

Terrain mesh changes the height and shape of the simulated ground.

It is normally created from digital elevation data and converted into a network of terrain points and triangles. More detailed data can produce better-defined mountain profiles, escarpments, valleys and rolling ground, provided the source data is accurate and the simulator is allowed to display that detail.

Mesh does not, by itself, make the ground photographically sharp. A detailed mountain can still carry a blurry default texture, while a crisp orthophoto can be draped over an inaccurate or low-detail mountain shape.

How is terrain mesh different from other scenery?

Terrain mesh controls elevation; most other scenery components control surface appearance, placement or local detail.

An orthophoto package may therefore look realistic from altitude but still need a suitable mesh underneath it. Conversely, a pure mesh package can improve a mountain silhouette without changing the colour or resolution of the terrain image.

Is terrain mesh itself a scenery add-on?

Yes—terrain mesh is a specific category of scenery add-on rather than an alternative to scenery.

The distinction matters when reading download descriptions. “Scenery” might mean a single airport, an entire photographed region, a city object pack or a replacement elevation model. Check the package contents instead of assuming every scenery download changes the same layer.

Which type of scenery add-on do you need?

Choose the add-on type that matches the defect you can actually see.

  • Install terrain mesh when mountain profiles, valleys or general elevations are too crude or inaccurate.
  • Choose orthophotos or ground textures when the ground shape is acceptable but its surface appearance is generic or blurry.
  • Use landclass when towns, forests, farmland or other broad surface types appear in the wrong places.
  • Add autogen or object scenery when an area lacks buildings, trees or landmarks.
  • Install airport scenery when runways, taxiways and terminal structures need improvement.

Does higher-resolution mesh always look better?

Higher-resolution mesh can reveal finer terrain features, but resolution alone does not guarantee accurate or attractive scenery.

A smaller elevation-sample spacing generally means more terrain detail. The result still depends on the quality of the source data, removal of invalid elevation points, treatment of coastlines and airports, and the simulator’s terrain settings. Poor high-resolution data can produce spikes, pits and jagged ridges that are worse than a cleaner lower-resolution model.

There may also be little visible improvement over a simulator whose default terrain is already detailed in that region. Why can terrain mesh make airports float or sink?

Airports float, sink or develop plateaux when the airport elevation and surrounding terrain no longer agree.

Many airport packages include a flatten, elevation correction or local terraforming data. Combining that with another airport version or regional mesh can produce steep walls, trenches and uneven runways.

  1. Disable duplicate airport packages. Two versions of the same airport are a more common cause than the broad mesh itself.
  2. Check local elevation corrections. Old correction files can remain active after the airport they supported has been removed.
  3. Place broad regional mesh below airport scenery where the simulator uses an ordered scenery library. Airport-specific terrain should normally take precedence locally.
  4. Test packages individually. Disable the newest mesh, airport or terraforming package, reload the area, and identify which combination creates the fault.

In Microsoft Flight Simulator, packages can contain airports, elevation data and terraforming together, so a download labelled simply as “scenery” may still alter the ground. Our breakdown of MSFS terrain, airport, city and photogrammetry scenery helps distinguish those package types.

Why is an installed mesh not making any difference?

An installed mesh may appear unchanged because it is inactive, replaced by another base layer, limited by terrain settings or no better than the default data.

  • Confirm that the package covers the exact region being viewed.
  • Check that the add-on is enabled and placed appropriately in the simulator’s scenery system.
  • Raise the relevant terrain-detail setting if the simulator provides one.
  • Test in mountainous terrain where elevation differences are easy to recognise.
  • Remember that mesh will not sharpen textures, add buildings or improve airport models.

The practical rule is simple: use mesh to correct the shape of the ground, then use textures, overlays, objects and airport scenery to improve what appears on top of it.
