Learn how Train Sim World timetables handle services, AI traffic, layers and scoring, plus how to fix missing trains and persistent red signals.
In Train Sim World, a timetable is a route-specific, pre-authored operating day of services. You select one scheduled working and drive it to its booked stops, while the dispatcher controls signals and compatible trains run around you as AI traffic. It is a simulation, not a live real-world railway timetable.
What Timetable Mode simulates
Timetable Mode recreates the planned movements for a particular route, including passenger trains, freight workings, depot moves and empty stock where the route supports them. Older Train Sim World releases may call it Service Mode, but the basic idea is the same.
Each playable service has an assigned train, origin, destination, start time and approximate duration. The timetable also tells AI trains when to appear, where they should stop and which paths they should request from the dispatcher. Signals can therefore change because of traffic ahead rather than through a scripted event aimed only at the player.
The plan is fixed rather than live or randomly generated. Your actions can still disturb it: a late departure, slow driving or an extended station stop may delay following trains and cause conflicting movements to be held at signals.
How do I start a timetable service?
You start by selecting a route, opening its timetable or service list, and choosing the train and working you want to drive.
- Choose the route: timetables belong to individual routes, so changing route gives you a different operating plan and service list.
- Select the timetable variant: some routes offer more than one authored timetable, such as an original and a revised version. This option appears only where the route supplies alternatives.
- Pick a service: check its origin, destination, start time and estimated duration. Pay attention to similarly named workings travelling in opposite directions.
- Prepare the cab: the simulation usually places you in or near the train shortly before departure. Set up the cab, release the brakes and configure any required safety systems without leaving before the booked time.
- Follow the objectives: observe signals and speed limits, stop at the marked platforms and operate the doors when instructed. A departure time means you should remain at the platform until that time, even if boarding finishes early.

You can also spawn on foot at a chosen location and time on supported routes. This lets you watch or ride scheduled AI trains and, where the simulator presents the option, take control of an eligible service from the cab.
Services, layers and AI traffic
AI trains follow the same authored timetable, but the amount and variety of traffic depend on the route, selected timetable and compatible add-ons you own.

A locomotive add-on does not automatically appear everywhere that its real counterpart operated. The developer must create a compatible layer or substitution for that specific route and timetable. Some simulator generations or hardware versions may use reduced traffic plans on especially dense routes. Location and time matter too: a rural terminus at midday can appear quiet even when the same timetable is busy near a city during the peak. Why are timetable services or trains missing?
Missing services usually result from content ownership, filters, timetable selection or route compatibility rather than a broken installation.
- Clear service filters: a locomotive, operator or service-type filter can hide valid workings.
- Check the selected variant: an older and newer timetable for the same route may contain different trains and service counts.
- Confirm add-on ownership: layered services remain unavailable without the exact compatible content they require.
- Check installation status: owning an add-on is not enough if its route or rolling-stock package has not been installed and recognised by the simulator.
- Do not confuse substitutions with layers: a substituted locomotive may change the train on a service without increasing the number of listed workings.
- Restart after installing content: newly installed layers may not populate until Train Sim World has reloaded its owned-content catalogue.
A common mistake we see is assuming every train visible in the collection menu must have services on every owned route. Timetable compatibility is deliberately authored; matching track gauge and electrification alone are not enough.
Can timetable services run late?
Yes, timetable services can run late, and the dispatcher will normally continue routing trains according to their paths and priorities rather than resetting the clock.
Scoring systems vary between Train Sim World releases and routes, but punctual arrival, stopping accuracy, speed-limit compliance and safe operation commonly affect the result. A late service can usually still be completed. Trying to recover every lost second by speeding often produces a worse score or a signal passed at danger.
A red signal may simply mean an AI train is crossing or occupying the block ahead. Wait for the route to clear and use the signaller command only when appropriate; it does not give blanket permission to pass a red aspect. If the same service remains deadlocked at the same place after a clean restart, the cause may be an authored timetable or dispatcher fault rather than your driving.
Is Timetable Mode the same as Journey or Free Roam?
No: Timetable Mode runs an authored railway schedule, while Journey, scenarios and Free Roam organise or create driving sessions in different ways.

After completing a service, some routes and simulator versions let you remain in the world on foot, ride another train or take over a subsequent eligible working. Do not assume that the next service will start automatically, however; if no continuation is offered, select it separately from the timetable list.
