Compare Train Sim World 4 vs 5: routes, new features, DLC compatibility, progress transfer and whether the upgrade is worth it.
Train Sim World 5 is an evolutionary successor to Train Sim World 4, not a complete rebuild. It adds three different headline routes, Conductor Mode, Fast Travel, Route Hopping and a revised live map, while retaining TSW4 features such as Free Roam and broad compatibility with previously owned add-ons.
Train Sim World 4 vs 5 at a glance
The main differences are the bundled routes and TSW5's additional ways to move around and interact with services.
| Area | Train Sim World 4 | Train Sim World 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Standard-edition routes | East Coast Main Line: Peterborough–Doncaster, S-Bahn Vorarlberg: Lindau–Bludenz and Antelope Valley Line: Los Angeles–Lancaster | West Coast Main Line: London Euston–Milton Keynes, Kinzigtalbahn: Frankfurt–Fulda and San Bernardino Line: Los Angeles–San Bernardino |
| Headline features | Introduced Free Roam, Photo Mode and Formation Designer | Keeps those features and adds Conductor Mode, Fast Travel, Route Hopping and an improved live map |
| Graphics technology | Unreal Engine 4 generation | Still based on Unreal Engine 4; not an Unreal Engine 5 rebuild |
| Older add-ons | Runs compatible content owned for TSW4 and earlier releases | Most compatible owned add-ons transfer within the same account and platform ecosystem |
| Main reason to choose it | You prefer its routes and do not need the newer features | You want its route bundle, conductor gameplay or content released for the TSW5 generation |
Deluxe and Special editions add different locomotives or routes, so compare the actual package rather than relying on the edition name. Our breakdown of route and add-on availability explains how bundled and separately purchased content fit together.
What features did Train Sim World 5 add?
Train Sim World 5 adds useful convenience and role-playing features, but it does not fundamentally replace the driving model established by TSW4.
- Conductor Mode: On supported services, you can work away from the driving desk, operate doors and check passengers' tickets. It is not available on every route or service.
- Fast Travel: The map can move you between supported locations on the route instead of requiring a full drive or walk.
- Route Hopping: Designated portals let you transfer between compatible routes that share a location. Routes do not connect automatically merely because they depict the same station.
- Improved live map: The map provides clearer information for following services and selecting locations.
TSW5 also retains Free Roam, Formation Designer and Photo Mode from TSW4. The core upgrade does not remaster every old route, replace every train's physics or guarantee better frame rates.
Does Train Sim World 5 use a newer graphics engine?
No, TSW5 is not an Unreal Engine 5 conversion, so buyers should not expect a wholesale visual or performance transformation. Our explanation of the engine used by Train Sim World covers what that means for graphics, loading and older content.
Does Train Sim World 4 DLC work in Train Sim World 5?
Most Train Sim World Compatible routes and locomotives owned in TSW4 can be used in TSW5 without buying them again, provided you remain within the supported account, storefront and platform family.
- Storefront ownership matters: A purchase on one PC storefront does not create a licence on another storefront or console family.
- Add-ons may require separate installation: Owning a route is not always enough; its TSW5-compatible content package may still need to be installed through the platform's content-management screen.
- Dependencies still apply: A locomotive may install but fail to appear in a timetable if its required route or prerequisite stock is missing.
- Console versions can differ: Memory limits may affect timetable layers or available content on older hardware. Check the relevant platform and console-generation compatibility before assuming two installations will be identical.
A mistake we see constantly is treating “same platform” as meaning any PC or console. Check the purchasing account and storefront first, then confirm that each add-on is installed before paying for it again.
The compatibility is mainly forward-facing: owning a TSW4 route normally lets you use its compatible version in TSW5, but an add-on sold specifically for TSW5 should not be assumed to work inside TSW4.
Does TSW4 progress transfer to TSW5?
TSW5 can import a supported TSW4 profile, but the transfer should be treated as a one-time, one-way migration rather than continuous synchronisation.
Progress made later in TSW4 will not keep updating the TSW5 profile. Do not assume that platform achievements, trophies, every setting or a suspended service will transfer exactly; keep the TSW4 installation and profile until you have checked your routes, liveries and progression in TSW5.
Is Train Sim World 5 worth upgrading from TSW4?
TSW5 is worth the move when you want its routes or specific new features, but it is not essential for someone satisfied with TSW4's existing content.
- Choose TSW5 for West Coast Main Line, Frankfurt–Fulda, San Bernardino Line, Conductor Mode, Route Hopping or TSW5-generation add-ons.
- Stay with TSW4 if you mainly drive your existing collection, already have Free Roam and do not want the newer route bundle.
- Do not upgrade solely for graphics because TSW5 is not an Unreal Engine 5 overhaul and old routes do not automatically receive major visual upgrades.
- Allow for storage because TSW5 is a separate application and compatible route packages may need to be installed again for it.
For a new purchase rather than an existing TSW4 installation, TSW5 is itself an older generation. Compare what changed between Train Sim World 5 and 6 before paying for a legacy bundle.
