Use the 64-bit version of Train Simulator Classic on any supported 64-bit Windows PC. It can use far more memory, so it is the better default for detailed routes, large consists and asset-heavy scenarios. Choose 32-bit only to troubleshoot a legacy add-on or external utility that will not run under 64-bit.
Which Train Simulator Classic version should you choose?
Standard 64-bit is the right choice for normal play. The two versions run the same simulator content, but the 64-bit executable has much more memory headroom.

A route being old is not, by itself, a reason to use 32-bit. Start with 64-bit and change only when you can identify a specific compatibility problem.
Why is 64-bit better for Train Simulator Classic?
The main advantage is memory capacity, not higher visual quality. A 32-bit process has an address-space ceiling of roughly 4 GB and can fail before reaching that exact figure because memory must be allocated in usable blocks.
The 64-bit executable can address far more memory, subject to the PC's installed RAM and Windows page file. This matters on routes containing dense scenery, many unique assets, complex rolling stock or AI-heavy scenarios. 64-bit does not cure corrupt assets, missing dependencies or a broken scenario. It also cannot compensate for insufficient physical memory or a disabled page file.
Does Train Simulator Classic 64-bit improve FPS?
64-bit does not automatically increase frame rate. It may reduce crashes or pauses caused by memory pressure, but FPS still depends mainly on the processor, graphics card, route complexity, rolling stock and graphics configuration.
If performance rather than memory is the problem, use our practical graphics-setting recommendations instead of switching back to 32-bit. Lowering demanding settings can help FPS; changing executable architecture usually does not.
Will DLC, Workshop content and add-ons work in 64-bit?
Most Train Simulator Classic routes, locomotives, scenarios and Workshop items work in 64-bit because both executables use the same Assets and Content folders. You do not need separate copies of ordinary DLC.
The main exceptions are legacy products that rely on an old 32-bit executable component, copy-protection system, launcher or utility that hooks directly into the simulator. An old installer refusing to run is an installer compatibility problem; it does not necessarily mean the installed route or rolling stock requires the 32-bit simulator.
When an add-on behaves differently, test the same scenario in both versions. If only 32-bit works, disable external tools and integrations one at a time before treating 32-bit as a permanent requirement.
Can you switch versions without reinstalling?
Yes. The 32-bit and 64-bit launch choices normally use the same Train Simulator Classic installation and installed content.
- Confirm Windows is 64-bit. The 64-bit simulator executable requires a 64-bit Windows installation.
- Start the game through Steam. Select the launch entry explicitly marked 64-bit; the wording may vary with the Steam launch dialogue.
- Use standard 64-bit first. Do not confuse executable architecture with any separately labelled experimental renderer option.
- Run a known working scenario. Test official or otherwise confirmed content before introducing legacy add-ons and external utilities.
- Return to 32-bit only for comparison. If Steam has remembered a launch preference, change or clear that preference in the game's properties.

What if Train Simulator Classic still crashes in 64-bit?
A crash in 64-bit does not automatically indicate a memory limit. Missing assets, corrupt files, an invalid consist, incompatible third-party software, low available RAM or page-file restrictions can produce similar symptoms.
- If the same scenario fails in both versions, inspect the scenario and its required assets.
- If only 64-bit fails, test without external utilities, overlays or legacy integrations.
- If failure occurs after memory use rises on a demanding route, check available RAM and the Windows page file.
