How do I drive a train in Train Simulator Classic?
To drive a train in Train Simulator Classic, choose a beginner scenario, set the reverser to Forward, release every applied brake, add power gently, obey signals and speed limits, then brake early for the next restriction or stop. Getting a train moving
The reliable starting sequence is direction, brakes, power: select the direction of travel, confirm that the brakes are released, then open the throttle or regulator gradually.
- Choose a suitable scenario. Start with an Academy lesson, tutorial or straightforward passenger scenario rather than an advanced locomotive or unrestricted Free Roam session. Our beginner setup and scenario guide explains the main modes and what to use first.
- Read the briefing and task list. Check your destination, departure time, passenger-loading instruction and first signal. Some scenarios will not register the objective until loading or another scripted task is complete.
- Activate the driving cab. Standard scenarios usually start with the train prepared. Advanced add-ons may require a master key, battery, engine start, pantograph or circuit breaker procedure described in that locomotive's supplied manual.
- Select the direction. Put the reverser or direction selector into Forward. On steam locomotives, set a high forward cut-off for starting rather than treating the reverser as a simple three-position switch.
- Release the brakes. Release both the train brake and independent locomotive brake where separate handles are provided. Wait for the brake cylinder pressure to fall and the brake system to recharge before expecting the train to roll.
- Apply power gently. Increase the throttle, combined power handle or steam regulator one step at a time. Reduce power immediately if the wheels slip or the ammeter enters an overload region.
- Control speed. Watch the next signal, upcoming speed restriction and gradient rather than reacting only when the train reaches them. A timetable never authorises speeding or passing a stop signal.
Which Train Simulator Classic controls do I need first?
The essential controls are the reverser, power controller, train brake and locomotive brake; the driving HUD lets beginners operate these without finding every cab control.

Driving diesel, electric and steam traction
Each traction type follows the same basic rules, but its power controls and preparation differ.

With steam traction, use a high cut-off and modest regulator opening to start, then shorten the cut-off as speed rises. Advanced steam models may also require cylinder cocks, dampers, injectors and careful boiler-pressure management.
How should I read signals and speed limits?
A stop aspect is the end of your movement authority, while a caution aspect warns that a more restrictive signal or route condition is ahead.
- Stop or danger: stop before the signal unless the signaller grants permission to pass it. The default request key is usually
Tab, but permission is not automatic. - Caution: reduce speed early enough to stop at the next signal. Signal meanings vary between countries, routes and semaphore or colour-light systems.
- Clear: proceed while still observing the permitted speed and any route indication.
- Speed restriction: obey the lower applicable limit for the track and train. Brake before the restriction begins, not after the locomotive enters it.

How do I brake and stop accurately?
Accurate stops come from braking earlier than road-driving instincts suggest, observing the first reduction in speed and adjusting the brake rather than making one late emergency application.
- Close the power. Return the throttle or regulator to off and allow the train to coast.
- Make an initial brake application. Start while there is ample distance remaining, especially with a heavy train, poor adhesion or a downhill gradient.
- Judge the response. Add brake if the stopping point is approaching too quickly; reduce the application if the train will stop short. Different stock can have radically different brake delays and release times.
- Control the final approach. Ease the application as speed falls, but retain enough braking to prevent the train from rolling. Aim for the platform stop board or scenario marker specified for the service.
- Secure the train. Once stopped, hold it with the appropriate brake and complete any passenger-loading or coupling instruction before moving again.
Avoid repeatedly applying and fully releasing the brakes. On stock that models air or vacuum systems in detail, this can deplete the available braking reserve or leave too little time for the brakes to release before the next application.
Why is my train not moving?
A train that will not move usually has a brake still applied, an inactive direction selector, a traction interlock or an incomplete locomotive start-up procedure.
- Return power to zero. Many locomotives lock out traction if power was applied while the brake was on. Reset the controller before trying again.
- Check the reverser. Confirm that the active cab has its master key or direction selector in Forward rather than Neutral.
- Check every brake. Release the train brake, locomotive brake and any handbrake applied to the locomotive or wagons. A low brake-cylinder reading normally indicates release, while automatic air-brake pipe pressure generally rises as the system recharges; vacuum equipment displays different values.
- Wait for brake release. Long trains and older braking systems may take several seconds to release throughout the consist.
- Check traction preparation. Verify the engine, pantograph, circuit breaker, doors and safety-system acknowledgement where the model requires them.
- Inspect the route ahead. A red signal, wrongly set points in Free Roam or a scenario instruction can prevent or prohibit movement.
- Apply a small amount of power. If the wheels slip but the train barely moves, reduce power and use sanding if the locomotive provides it.
A mistake we see constantly is adding more throttle against an applied brake. That increases wheel slip or traction current without solving the interlock; power off, find the brake or start-up issue, let the system reset, then try again gently.
