To understand ATC radio messages in a flight simulator, listen for your callsign first, then extract the instruction, runway or route, altitude, heading, frequency and clearance limit. Write down the numbers, read back safety-critical items, and use “say again” rather than guessing when any part is unclear.
In flight simulators, as in real-world aviation, ATC speech is deliberately compressed. You do not need to memorise every possible sentence; you need to recognise a small set of verbs, numbers and conditions.
The anatomy of an ATC radio call
Most ATC radio calls contain an addressee, an action and the parameters needed to carry out that action.
- Callsign: identifies which aircraft must respond.
- Action: words such as
turn,climb,descend,contact,holdorcleared. - Parameters: the heading, level, runway, speed, route, frequency or transponder code.
- Condition or next step: phrases such as
after passing,until establishedorreport final.

Phraseology varies by country and simulator. US controllers commonly say “descend and maintain”, while many ICAO-style environments use “descend to altitude”. Some built-in ATC systems also mix styles or produce awkward instructions, but the underlying action remains the same.
Do not round a radio frequency. Where 8.33 kHz channel spacing is used, every spoken digit can matter, although some older simulated radios do not support those channels.
How do I know an ATC message is for me?
Act only on a transmission addressed to your callsign, unless ATC issues a broadcast instruction to all aircraft.
A controller normally puts the callsign near the beginning of an instruction. Other pilots may receive the same runway, altitude or aircraft-type reference, so hearing a familiar number is not enough. ATIS is different: it is a recorded airport information broadcast containing weather, runway and pressure information. Note its identifying letter, such as “Information Alpha”, and report that you have it when contacting the controller. It is not a personal clearance.
Which ATC instructions must I read back?
Read back the parts of a clearance where a misunderstanding could place the aircraft at the wrong position, level or runway.
Exact legal requirements vary by country, but good simulator discipline is to read back:
- runway entry, crossing, take-off, landing and hold-short instructions;
- assigned altitudes, flight levels, headings and speeds;
- route clearances and clearance limits;
- runways used for departure or approach;
- transponder codes and pressure settings; and
- frequency changes when needed to confirm the digits.
For example, reply to “G-ABCD, turn left heading two seven zero, descend to altitude three thousand feet, QNH one zero one six” with “Left heading two seven zero, descend altitude three thousand feet, QNH one zero one six, G-ABCD.” If the controller corrects one item, read back the corrected item again.
“Roger” only confirms that you received the transmission. “Wilco” means you received it and will comply. Neither replaces a required numerical or runway readback.
Clearance words that change what you may do
A clearance permits only the action that ATC has explicitly authorised.
- Cleared for take-off: you may begin the take-off on the named runway.
- Cleared to land: you may land on the named runway.
- Line up and wait: you may enter and align on the runway, but not take off.
- Continue approach: keep approaching; you are not yet cleared to land.
- Expect: plan for the stated route, level or approach, but do not act on it yet.
- Stand by: wait for the controller to return to you; it is not permission to proceed.
- Hold position or hold short: stop and remain before the stated point.
- Cleared for an approach: fly that approach, but wait for a separate landing clearance.
A mistake we see constantly is acting on “expect”, especially when ATC mentions a likely runway or altitude. Treat it as planning information until an instruction contains an action word or explicit clearance.
What should I do if ATC is too fast or unclear?
Do not execute an uncertain instruction; continue with the last clear and safe instruction while requesting clarification.
- Identify the missing part. Separate the callsign, action and numbers rather than asking for the entire transmission again.
- Request another transmission. Say
G-ABCD, say again altitudeorG-ABCD, say again slowly. - Confirm a doubtful number. Use
Confirm heading two seven zero?rather than silently choosing what seems likely. - Say unable when necessary. If an instruction cannot be flown safely or your aircraft cannot comply, state
unableand request an alternative. - Use the simulator’s available aids. Built-in ATC may require a response-menu selection rather than recognising free speech. Enable captions or an ATC log while learning, if the simulator provides them.
If the problem is poor audio rather than phraseology, check that the correct COM frequency is active, the receiver is selected on the audio panel, radio and communications volume are raised, and engine noise is not masking speech. Also confirm that the message was not sent on a different radio.
How can I practise understanding ATC messages?
The fastest way to improve is to predict the next instruction, copy it in shorthand and then read it back aloud.
- Begin at a quiet airport. Practise taxi, take-off, circuit and landing calls before attempting a complex IFR arrival.
- Use shorthand. A note such as
L270 / 3000 / Q1016 / TWR 118.7captures the action without writing a sentence. - Anticipate the controller. Knowing how simulator calls progress from gate to landing sharply reduces the number of possible messages.
- Read back from your note. This exposes missing or transposed digits immediately.
- Remove text support gradually. Keep captions available at first, then rely on audio once the message patterns are familiar.
