To use ATC in DCS World, tune an aircraft radio to the airfield’s listed frequency, press that radio’s push-to-talk control, choose ATC and the airfield from the communications menu, then request start-up, taxi, take-off, inbound or landing as appropriate. How do I contact an airfield in DCS World?
You must select a friendly airfield, use its voice frequency and transmit through a compatible powered radio.
- Find the tower frequency. Check the mission briefing, select the airfield on the F10 map, or consult its airfield chart. The charts and mission pages available through the DCS kneeboard and its custom pages are useful when the map is restricted. Do not confuse the tower frequency with an ILS, TACAN or navigation beacon channel.
- Confirm that the airfield is friendly. Enemy or neutral bases may not appear as usable ATC recipients. A captured airfield can also take time to become operational if the mission has modelled that transition.
- Check your communications setting. With Easy Communications enabled, DCS normally selects and tunes a suitable radio for you. With it disabled, you must configure the radio yourself.
- Bind the correct transmit control. Open the Controls screen for the aircraft and search for commands containing terms such as communication, radio, PTT or microphone switch. The generic communications menu is usually bound to
\, but full-fidelity aircraft often require a radio-specific microphone-switch direction instead. Keyboard layouts and module bindings differ, so treat the Controls screen as authoritative. - Power and tune the radio. Set the listed frequency or preset, select the correct AM or FM mode where applicable, and check the radio or intercom selector. A frequency entered into an unpowered radio will not work.
- Open the radio menu and call ATC. Press the appropriate PTT control, select ATC, choose the airfield, then use the function key shown beside the required request.

Should I use Easy Communications or realistic radios?
Use Easy Communications while learning the ATC sequence; disable it when you want radio tuning and PTT selection to form part of the cockpit workload.

Which ATC call should I make at each stage?
Use the calls in operational order, although the exact wording and available choices vary with the module, airfield and mission state.

An inbound reply may include the runway, a heading and QFE. QFE sets the altimeter to read approximately zero at that airfield; check the units accepted by your aircraft before entering the value. After touchdown, clear the runway promptly and follow any taxi-to-parking instruction.
DCS ties several calls to location and aircraft state. Skipping start-up and taxi, approaching from an unusual direction or calling from too far away can prevent the next menu option from appearing.
Why is DCS ATC not responding?
Most unanswered ATC calls are caused by using the generic menu without keying the correct radio, or by tuning the wrong type of frequency.
- The menu opens but no transmission occurs: with realistic communications enabled, use the aircraft’s radio-specific PTT or microphone-switch command rather than only
\. - The airfield is absent: confirm that it belongs to your coalition, supports ATC in that mission and is within useful radio range.
- The call is addressed to the wrong station: reopen the ATC submenu and verify the airfield name. Nearby bases can have similar-looking entries.
- The frequency is correct but there is no reply: check radio power, preset or manual mode, AM/FM selection, intercom routing and antenna or radio damage.
- You hear nothing but see subtitles: raise the relevant radio and DCS audio levels. Cockpit radio volume controls can silence reception even when transmission succeeds.
- ATC delays or refuses clearance: another aircraft may occupy the runway or approach. Wait, inspect the traffic and call again rather than repeatedly entering the runway.
A mistake we see constantly is copying a number from an airport chart without checking what it represents. TACAN, ILS and ATC can all be listed together, but only the voice-radio frequency belongs in the communications radio.
What can DCS World ATC actually do?
DCS World’s built-in ATC provides basic automated airfield calls, runway information and procedural clearances, but it is not a complete traffic-management simulation.
Its clearance should be treated as a procedural and simulator-state cue, not proof that every human or AI aircraft will remain clear. It may not understand an improvised circuit, formation recovery or player who ignores the expected taxi route. Does ATC work differently in multiplayer and on carriers?
In multiplayer, the automated ATC menu can remain available, but many organised servers use human voice procedures and frequencies published in the briefing. An AI clearance does not guarantee that other players have heard or will follow it.
Carrier operations use carrier-specific marshal, tower and landing calls rather than the normal land-airfield start-up and circuit sequence. The available menus depend on the carrier, aircraft and installed content, but the same radio fundamentals apply: correct frequency, powered radio and the appropriate PTT control.
