Does X-Plane Mobile support controllers and joysticks?

Which controllers work with X-Plane Mobile?

The best match is a Bluetooth gamepad already supported by the phone or tablet’s operating system. Compatible console-style and mobile game controllers usually have a better chance of working than specialist flight-simulation hardware.

A Bluetooth connection alone does not establish compatibility. The controller must expose buttons and analogue axes in a form both the mobile operating system and X-Plane Mobile understand. How do I connect a controller to X-Plane Mobile?

Pair or cable the controller at the operating-system level before launching X-Plane Mobile. This gives the app its best chance of detecting the device and loading the appropriate controller profile.

  1. Check operating-system compatibility. Confirm that the exact controller model is supported by your version of iOS, iPadOS or Android. A familiar brand name does not guarantee that every model or revision works.
  2. Pair or connect the controller. Use the device’s Bluetooth settings, or attach a wired controller through a data-capable USB adapter. Android devices may require USB host or OTG support.
  3. Connect before opening X-Plane Mobile. If the simulator was already running, close it fully and relaunch it after the controller reports as connected.
  4. Review the available controls. Use the built-in mapping where required, or inspect controller assignments if your app release exposes them. Do not expect every desktop X-Plane command to be assignable.
  5. Test one input at a time. Load a simple aircraft, move the pitch, roll, yaw and throttle controls, and watch the cockpit controls respond before beginning a flight.

Keep the phone or tablet level during testing so tilt input does not mask or fight the controller. A gamepad improves precision, but cockpit switches and less common functions may still require the touchscreen.

Can I use a desktop joystick, yoke or throttle?

A desktop flight controller works only if the mobile device exposes it as a standard game controller and X-Plane Mobile understands its axes. Hardware that needs a Windows or macOS driver, configuration utility or several separate USB devices is unlikely to provide a usable mobile setup.

The mistake we see most often is assuming that a USB adapter adds compatibility. It only changes the physical connection; it cannot translate an unsupported device protocol or install the manufacturer’s driver.

Choose desktop X-Plane when you need reliable calibration, individual axis assignments, separate throttles, rudder pedals or extensive button mapping. Why is my controller connected but not working?

Most failures happen because the operating system has paired the controller but X-Plane Mobile cannot read its analogue input profile. Pairing proves that a connection exists; it does not prove that the simulator can use every axis and button.

  • The controller operates menus but not the aircraft: digital navigation buttons may be recognised while the analogue axes are unsupported. Test with a conventional OS-compatible gamepad.
  • X-Plane Mobile does not detect it: close the simulator, disconnect and reconnect the controller, then relaunch the app. Restart the mobile device if detection still fails.
  • The aircraft drifts or receives double inputs: centre the sticks, disconnect duplicate controllers and disable tilt input if the available control settings permit it.
  • A wired controller receives no power or data: verify that the adapter supports data as well as charging, that USB host or OTG mode is available, and that the mobile device can supply sufficient power.
  • Separate pedals or throttles do not appear: test each device individually. A phone or tablet may enumerate several USB peripherals even when X-Plane Mobile cannot combine them into one control set.
  • Some buttons cannot be assigned: mobile controller mapping is narrower than desktop X-Plane mapping. This may be an app limitation rather than a controller fault.
