Learn how to install and use a DCS World DTC mod, load aircraft data, verify the cartridge, and fix failed uploads or multiplayer issues.
To use a data transfer cartridge (DTC) mod in DCS World, install the package and any companion utility, select a supported aircraft, create or import a profile, enter the cockpit in the required power state, then command the tool to upload the data. Keep DCS focused and verify every loaded value before flight.
What does a DCS data transfer cartridge mod do?
A DTC mod prepares aircraft data outside the cockpit and transfers it into a supported DCS World module. Depending on the aircraft and utility, that data may include steerpoints, routes, radio presets, countermeasure programmes, navigation settings or weapon-related configuration.
DCS does not provide one universal cartridge procedure for every aircraft. Community tools therefore use different loading methods, and support is normally tied to an exact aircraft module rather than an entire aircraft family.
| Loading method | What you do | Main gotcha |
|---|---|---|
| Automated cockpit entry | Open the required avionics page and start the upload | Losing window focus or touching controls can interrupt the sequence |
| Script or export bridge | Run the companion utility while its Saved Games script communicates with DCS | Another add-on may have overwritten or duplicated Export.lua entries |
| Module or native cartridge interface | Prepare the profile and load it through the aircraft's supported DTC controls | The available data fields and loading stage vary by module |
How do you load a DTC profile into DCS World?
The reliable method is to test a small profile in a simple mission before loading a complete combat setup.
- Confirm aircraft support. Check that the utility explicitly supports your exact DCS module and the type of data you want to transfer. A profile for a different variant can appear to upload while placing values in the wrong fields.
- Install the supplied components. Most community packages use the relevant folder under
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS\; older installations may retain a differently named DCS Saved Games folder. Do not place files in the protected DCS installation directory unless the package instructions specifically require it. Our Saved Games mod-installation checklist covers folder structure and the common extra-folder mistake. - Protect existing scripts. Back up
Saved Games\DCS\Scripts\Export.luabefore allowing an installer to change it. If several utilities use that file, preserve the required entries rather than replacing the whole file or adding duplicate hooks. - Create the cartridge profile. Enter or import the required waypoints, radio channels and aircraft settings. Match the coordinate notation and units requested by the utility: decimal degrees, degrees and decimal minutes, and degrees/minutes/seconds are not interchangeable.
- Use a controlled test mission. Start with two obvious waypoints, one radio preset and one easily checked setting. You can create a simple verification mission in the DCS Mission Editor instead of diagnosing a large operational mission.
- Prepare the cockpit and upload. Supply electrical power, initialise the required avionics and select any page or mode specified by the tool. Choose the correct aircraft profile, press its Load, Send or Upload command, then avoid changing views, pressing keys or clicking cockpit controls until it finishes.
- Verify before moving. Step through the loaded steerpoints, compare coordinates and elevations, test the radio presets and inspect any countermeasure or weapon settings. A successful upload only confirms that values were entered; it does not prove they were correct.
What should you check after loading the cartridge?
The first and last entries in each data set reveal most DTC errors quickly.
- Navigation: confirm the waypoint number, hemisphere, coordinate format and elevation units.
- Radios: check that frequencies went into the intended radio and preset channel.
- Countermeasures: inspect quantities and programme timing rather than assuming the displayed profile name is enough.
- Aircraft state: confirm that loading did not leave an avionics page, mode or switch in an unexpected position.
- Mission alignment: compare at least one point with the briefing or Mission Editor before take-off.
Why does the DTC upload fail or stop halfway?
Most failed DTC uploads are caused by an unsupported module, an unready cockpit, lost input focus or a broken script connection.
- Nothing happens: confirm that the correct aircraft profile is selected, the companion utility is running and the relevant avionics are powered. Run DCS and the utility at the same Windows privilege level, preferably both normally rather than as administrator.
- The sequence stops midway: return focus to DCS if the tool uses automated inputs, remove pauses or overlays that capture keys, and do not touch the keyboard, mouse or controller during entry.
- Values are garbled: check the expected keyboard layout, decimal separator, coordinate notation and units. Custom bindings can also interfere with tools that send keyboard commands.
- The utility cannot connect: inspect
Export.luafor missing, replaced or duplicated entries. Follow the utility's own merge instructions rather than blindly combining lines from separate add-ons. - It stopped working after a DCS update: disable the package, confirm that unmodified DCS works, then reinstall a compatible release. Use our process for checking mod compatibility after DCS updates before altering more files.
- The wrong location appears: recheck north/south and east/west indicators, waypoint numbering, elevation units and the coordinate format expected by both the tool and aircraft.
Can you use a DTC mod in DCS multiplayer?
A DTC mod can work in multiplayer when it passes the server's integrity requirements and its use is permitted by the server rules. Passing the integrity check does not automatically mean that cockpit automation, export scripts or imported mission information is allowed.
Use only data that a pilot could legitimately enter from the briefing, kneeboard or authorised mission material. If a server rejects the client or blocks the required export connection, disable the mod and restore the backed-up script rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.
Does every DCS aircraft support DTC mods?
No; DTC support is aircraft- and utility-specific. Prefer the module's native cartridge system when it supports all the data you need, because it is less dependent on automated inputs or third-party scripts. Use a community DTC utility when it adds a required function, supports your exact module and remains compatible with the mission or multiplayer server.
