How do I use helicopter autopilot in FSX?

To use a helicopter autopilot in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, first confirm that the aircraft supports one. Stabilise and trim the helicopter in forward flight, engage the autopilot master, then select heading, altitude or NAV hold. FSX's generic autopilot cannot hover, manage the collective or land the helicopter.

Does every FSX helicopter have autopilot?

Autopilot support is aircraft-specific, so the available controls depend more on the helicopter than on the FSX edition. Some models accept FSX's generic autopilot commands without displaying a conventional control panel; others use a custom automatic flight control system, while some have no autopilot at all.

Check the aircraft documentation and cockpit panels first. You can also inspect aircraft.cfg inside the aircraft's folder: an [autopilot] section containing autopilot_available=1 normally indicates support for the generic system. A custom gauge may work independently of that setting, however.

Changing a zero to one does not install a proper helicopter autopilot. At best, it enables FSX's largely fixed-wing control logic, which may oscillate or behave badly at helicopter speeds. Back up the file before experimenting.

How do I engage the helicopter autopilot?

  1. Check the flight controls. Make sure the cyclic, collective and anti-torque axes are assigned separately and that no second device is sending unwanted inputs. Our FSX helicopter control setup covers the correct assignments and calibration.
  2. Confirm which system is fitted. Use the aircraft's own autopilot or AFCS panel when it has one. Custom add-ons may ignore FSX's generic keyboard commands or require stability augmentation to be switched on first.
  3. Set the target. Move the heading bug to the desired heading and, where the panel provides a selector, set the intended altitude. For NAV tracking, tune the required NAV1 course or select GPS and ensure that the correct route leg is active.
  4. Establish stable forward flight. Set the collective for a steady power condition, centre the pedals, level the helicopter and trim away sustained cyclic pressure. Do not engage the generic autopilot while hovering, turning steeply or making a large climb or descent.
  5. Engage the master. The default FSX autopilot-master command is Z, unless it has been reassigned. Confirm the panel annunciation; the command is a toggle, so pressing it blindly can disconnect an already engaged system.
  6. Select one mode at a time. The default generic commands include Ctrl+H for heading hold, Ctrl+Z for altitude hold and Ctrl+N for NAV1 hold. The full FSX keyboard-command reference lists the other assignments.
  7. Keep managing power. Watch rotor RPM, airspeed, vertical speed and attitude. The generic autopilot mainly commands cyclic pitch and bank; it does not operate the collective for you.
  8. Disconnect before slow flight. Use the aircraft's disconnect control or the assigned autopilot-master command, verify that the annunciation extinguishes, and take manual control before approaching a hover or landing.

Useful FSX helicopter autopilot modes

The generic modes are best treated as forward-flight aids rather than a true rotorcraft AFCS.

Why does the FSX helicopter oscillate or disconnect?

Oscillation usually means that the helicopter was too slow, badly trimmed or outside the generic autopilot's useful control range. Disconnect immediately, recover manually, establish stable forward flight and then re-engage with modest targets.

  • No response to commands: the aircraft may lack autopilot support, its avionics or electrical system may be off, or a custom AFCS may require its own controls.
  • Repeated disconnects: check for noisy cyclic axes, duplicate controller assignments, trim movement and add-on systems that disconnect when the pilot moves the controls.
  • Porpoising in altitude hold: reduce the altitude or vertical-speed demand, correct the collective setting and increase to a stable forward speed before trying again.
  • Turning away from the route: verify the heading bug, NAV/GPS source, active GPS leg, NAV1 frequency and course interception.
  • Unable to hold altitude: the mode may not have captured, or the helicopter may lack enough power at its present weight and airspeed.

Can FSX helicopter autopilot hover or land?

The generic FSX autopilot cannot perform a true hover or automatic helicopter landing. Heading hold banks towards a heading rather than controlling pedal yaw, and altitude hold does not provide the coordinated collective control needed for a stable hover.

Only use hover hold, automatic transition or coupled landing functions when the particular add-on explicitly provides them. Those are custom aircraft systems, not standard FSX autopilot capabilities, and their own panel indications and operating limits take precedence over the generic commands.
