Learn how FSX helicopter auto-hover works, how to engage it safely, which aircraft need an add-on, and how to fix drift or connection failures.
FSX has no universal auto-hover command for every helicopter. The stock Robinson R22 and Bell 206 must normally be hovered manually; use a compatible aircraft’s own hover system or a SimConnect auto-hover add-on. Stabilise at near-zero groundspeed first, then engage it—auto-hover is a hold function, not an automatic take-off.
Does FSX have built-in auto-hover?
FSX does not provide one auto-hover control that works across all helicopters. Capability depends on the aircraft and any installed add-on.

Do not assume the normal FSX autopilot master key will lock a helicopter in place. An add-on may use its own panel switch, hotkey or companion program, so the supplied documentation takes precedence over generic keyboard lists.

How do I engage auto-hover safely?
Enter a controlled hover manually before asking the aircraft or utility to hold it.
- Confirm compatibility. Select an aircraft explicitly supported by the hover system. Similar-looking helicopters may use different flight dynamics and are not automatically interchangeable.
- Calibrate the controls. Remove duplicate cyclic, collective and pedal assignments, and apply only enough dead zone to stop unwanted input. Our FSX helicopter control and hovering guide covers the underlying setup and manual technique.
- Choose an easy starting condition. Use calm weather, normal simulation rate and open terrain while learning the system.
- Establish the hover. Reduce groundspeed and vertical speed to nearly zero, hold a steady heading and avoid engaging while descending rapidly. Groundspeed matters more than indicated airspeed when wind is present.
- Engage the documented mode. Use the aircraft’s hover switch or the add-on’s own command. Do not substitute the fixed-wing autopilot key unless its instructions specifically require that.
- Monitor the aircraft. Keep your hands near the controls and watch altitude, heading and movement over the ground. Disengage before accelerating into forward flight or making a manual touchdown.
What does auto-hover actually hold?
An auto-hover system holds only the parameters implemented by that aircraft or utility. Some maintain geographic position, heading and captured altitude; simpler systems may control attitude or altitude while still allowing drift.
- It may not follow terrain. Holding altitude does not guarantee constant clearance over rising or sloping ground.
- It may not control yaw. Pedal input can still be required if heading hold is absent.
- It does not replace power management. Excessive weight, poor rotor RPM or an unsuitable collective setting can exceed what the controller can correct.
- It is not an automatic landing system. Near the ground, visual monitoring and manual intervention remain necessary.
Why does FSX auto-hover drift or fail to engage?
Most failures come from unsupported aircraft, poor entry conditions, noisy control axes or a SimConnect utility that is not connected to FSX.
- Nothing happens: verify that the selected helicopter is supported and that any required companion program is running. FSX: Steam Edition uses SimConnect, but an older utility may require a legacy SimConnect component named in its own instructions.
- The helicopter lurches or climbs: engage from a steadier hover. Forward speed, a high descent rate or displaced controls can make the controller apply an abrupt correction.
- It drifts slowly: check wind, joystick noise and duplicate axis assignments. The system may be holding attitude rather than ground position.
- It oscillates: return the simulation to normal rate, reduce turbulence and stop moving the controls against the auto-hover system.
- The hotkey operates something else: look for an assignment conflict and remap one command. The FSX keyboard and control-command reference can help identify the existing assignment.
If the mode cannot maintain a stable hover after those checks, disengage it and fly manually. Auto-hover utilities depend on the supported flight model and should never be treated as protection against loss of control.
