Learn how to use auto-hover in FSX helicopters, which aircraft need an add-on, how to engage it safely, and how to fix drift or SimConnect faults.
FSX and FSX: Steam Edition have no universal auto-hover command. The stock Robinson R22 and Bell 206 JetRanger normally require manual hovering; use an aircraft-specific hover mode or a compatible SimConnect utility. Stabilise near zero groundspeed and vertical speed first, then engage it—auto-hover is a hold mode, not an automatic take-off.
Does FSX have built-in auto-hover or hover control?
No single built-in hover control works in every FSX helicopter. Availability depends on the aircraft, its flight model and any installed panel, gauge or external utility.
Searches and add-on menus may call the same idea autohover, auto hover, hover mode or hover control. Those labels can describe very different functions: attitude hold, altitude hold, a fixed forward speed or true position hold over the ground.

The standard autopilot master is not a generic helicopter auto-hover switch. It may operate supported heading or altitude functions, but it does not automatically stop horizontal drift; our breakdown of helicopter autopilot behaviour in FSX explains that distinction.
For the default aircraft, our library has a SimConnect hover utility for the R22, JetRanger and EH101. It provides stationary and forward auto-hover modes. Forward auto-hover deliberately commands movement, so do not select it when you want to remain over one point.
How do I activate auto-hover in FSX?
Establish a controlled manual hover, then engage the aircraft or utility’s documented hover command.
- Confirm the exact aircraft. A system written for the default Bell 206 may not work with a modified JetRanger or another helicopter using different flight dynamics.
- Check your control axes. Assign cyclic, collective and anti-torque pedals correctly, then remove duplicate assignments from unused throttles, gamepads and other controllers. Our cyclic, collective and pedal setup instructions cover the manual control needed before capture.
- Start any required companion program. Use the launch sequence in its included instructions and confirm that it has connected to FSX before trying the hotkey or panel control.
- Choose easy conditions. Begin in calm weather, at normal simulation rate and with ample clearance from the ground, buildings and trees.
- Stabilise the helicopter. Hold a steady heading with groundspeed and vertical speed close to zero. Groundspeed is the useful reference for position hold; indicated airspeed does not tell you whether wind is carrying the helicopter across the ground.
- Engage the documented mode. Use the add-on’s own hotkey, companion-program button or cockpit switch. Do not substitute the normal autopilot master command unless the instructions specifically require it.
- Verify the capture. Watch heading, altitude, vertical speed and movement relative to the ground. Allow small corrections, but disengage immediately if they grow into a climb, dive or oscillation.
- Disengage before manoeuvring. Unless the system documents pilot override or a forward mode, release auto-hover before accelerating, descending to land or making large pedal inputs.
A common mistake is engaging while the helicopter is still translating or descending. The controller then makes an abrupt correction to capture the selected state, which can look like a fault even though the entry conditions caused it.
What does auto-hover actually hold?
Auto-hover holds only the parameters implemented by that particular aircraft or utility.
- Position hold attempts to stop movement over a geographic point.
- Velocity hold maintains a selected movement, which may include a slow forward auto-hover mode.
- Attitude hold maintains pitch and bank but may still allow the helicopter to drift with wind.
- Altitude hold may preserve barometric altitude or another captured height; it does not necessarily maintain clearance above sloping terrain.
- Heading hold controls yaw only if the system implements it. Otherwise, pedal input may still be required.
Auto-hover also cannot create power that the helicopter does not have. Excessive weight, low rotor RPM or demanding weather can exceed the authority of a simple controller.
Is auto-hover an automatic take-off or landing mode?
No. Most FSX hover systems are capture-and-hold functions, not automatic take-off or landing systems. Lift into a stable hover manually, engage the mode when clear of obstacles, and disengage before touchdown unless the aircraft documentation explicitly describes a coupled landing function.
Can helicopters auto-hover in real life?
Yes, some real helicopters can auto-hover when fitted with a suitable automatic flight-control system, but many cannot. More advanced systems can combine inertial, satellite-position and radar-height information to hold position, heading and height; simpler helicopters still require continuous cyclic, collective and pedal input.
The same distinction applies in FSX. The fact that one simulated helicopter has a hover mode does not make auto-hover a simulator-wide command, and the stock R22 or Bell 206 should not be used as evidence that no helicopter can do it.
Why does FSX auto-hover drift or fail to engage?
Unsupported aircraft, poor capture conditions, conflicting control axes and a disconnected SimConnect client cause most auto-hover failures.

Do not attempt to repair a connection by placing an arbitrary SimConnect.dll in the FSX folder. SimConnect clients can depend on a particular installed runtime, so use the component specified by the utility and resolve the underlying connection error.
If auto-hover still cannot stabilise the aircraft in calm conditions, disengage it and fly manually. A compatible controller should reduce workload; it should not require continuous opposing control input to prevent loss of control.
