Learn how to open the Jester menu, control radar and navigation, issue useful F-14 commands, and fix common Jester AI problems in DCS World.
To use Jester AI in the DCS World F-14, occupy the front seat, open the Jester radial menu, select a task, then choose its parameters. Jester handles rear-seat radar, navigation and other RIO duties; you still fly the aircraft, configure its weapons and make the final employment decisions.
How do I open and control the Jester menu?
Open the radial wheel with the control assigned to Jester AI Menu in the active F-14 pilot control profile. The usual keyboard assignment is A, although customised profiles may differ.
- Take the pilot seat: Jester serves as your Radar Intercept Officer only when the rear cockpit is not occupied by another player.
- Tap the menu command: Use a short press rather than holding the key down. The wheel should remain available while you make a selection.
- Choose a task: Highlight a wedge using the mouse or view/head pointing, depending on your control and VR setup. Numbered shortcuts can also be used where the wheel displays them.
- Select the parameters: Commands often lead to another wheel for a radar mode, contact, scan direction, waypoint or other setting.
- Listen for confirmation: Jester normally acknowledges the order. Check the cockpit indications as well; an acknowledgement does not guarantee that the radar has acquired a target.
The menu is context-sensitive, so its contents change with aircraft state, equipment and mission phase. If it disappears as soon as you release the control, follow our fixes for a Jester wheel that closes immediately.
For frequent use, bind the menu command to an accessible HOTAS button. Avoid switches that continuously send an input while held, and clear duplicate assignments; our DCS joystick and HOTAS binding walkthrough covers the control-profile checks.
What can Jester AI control in the F-14?
Jester operates much of the equipment assigned to the rear cockpit, especially the AWG-9 radar, but he does not replace the pilot.
| Task | What to ask Jester to do | What the pilot still does |
|---|---|---|
| Radar search | Set the search mode and direct the scan towards the expected range, altitude or sector | Point the aircraft so the target lies inside the radar coverage |
| Target engagement | Build tracks, interrogate contacts and obtain an STT lock when required | Confirm identification and rules of engagement, configure the weapon and fire |
| Navigation and radios | Select or enter supported navigation data and operate rear-seat-controlled equipment | Fly the route and monitor fuel, timing and aircraft position |
| Countermeasures | Configure supported chaff functions and react to detected threats | Manoeuvre defensively and manage the overall threat response |
| LANTIRN | Search, designate and track through the available pod commands | Configure the bomb, follow steering and authorise release |
How should I use Jester for radar combat?
Jester works best when you give him useful geometry rather than repeatedly ordering different radar modes. Put the threat near the nose, tell him where to search and allow the AWG-9 time to establish a track.
Beyond visual range
- Point towards the intercept: A contact outside the radar's azimuth or elevation limits cannot be found by Jester.
- Define the search area: Use the menu options that best match the target's expected bearing, distance and altitude. A smaller, correctly placed search volume is usually more useful than scanning everywhere.
- Choose the appropriate tracking method: TWS is useful for maintaining multiple track files and supporting AIM-54 employment. STT concentrates on one target but may alert an opponent equipped to detect the lock.
- Allow the track to stabilise: A fresh return is not instantly a dependable firing solution, particularly against a manoeuvring or low-flying target.
- Verify the contact: Treat Jester's identification and datalink information as evidence, not permission to fire. Apply the mission's rules of engagement.
- Prepare and launch from the front seat: The pilot remains responsible for master arm, weapon selection, missile preparation where required and the trigger.
Within visual range
At close range, use the pilot-operated ACM acquisition modes such as PAL, PLM or VSL instead of working through several Jester submenus. These modes are faster when the target is already near the nose; Jester can continue making calls and handling rear-cockpit duties.
Why can’t Jester find or lock a target?
Jester cannot lock a contact that the AWG-9 cannot detect or that lies outside the selected scan volume. Common causes include:
- The target is above, below or too far to one side of the radar scan.
- The aircraft is beaming the radar, hiding in ground clutter or has very low closure in a pulse-Doppler mode.
- The radar is still warming up, set to standby, damaged or not configured for the requested task.
- The scan volume is too broad to revisit the expected position quickly.
- The target manoeuvred while Jester was building or maintaining its track file.
- A human player occupies the RIO seat, so Jester commands are unavailable.
First turn towards the last known position, then command a tighter search around the expected altitude and bearing. Give the radar a few sweeps before changing modes again. If the contact is close, switch to a pilot ACM acquisition mode rather than asking Jester to conduct another broad search.
Can Jester AI use LANTIRN?
Jester can operate LANTIRN through the radial menu when a compatible pod is fitted and the aircraft and mission state make those commands available. He can search, designate and track, but the pilot must configure the weapon, fly a valid delivery and release it.
If the LANTIRN options are absent, check the loadout and pod state rather than assuming the menu is broken. Other menu choices may also remain hidden until the relevant equipment is fitted or powered.
Does Jester remain active with a human RIO?
No. A human occupying the rear seat replaces Jester, so the AI menu is unavailable for normal RIO commands. Agree on radar, navigation and weapon responsibilities with the other player instead of expecting Jester to handle them in parallel.
