Fix the MSFS 2024 unexpected cloud save error safely: check account sign-in, network access and sync conflicts without wiping your progress.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 usually shows an “unexpected cloud save error” when it cannot authenticate the signed-in Microsoft/Xbox account, reach the cloud service, or reconcile local and online profile data. Fully quit the simulator, restore account and network access, then let one known-good save synchronise before deleting or resetting anything.
Why does the unexpected cloud save error appear?
The message means MSFS 2024 could not read, compare or update the online profile associated with your account. It does not automatically mean that your progress has been deleted.
- Service interruption: Microsoft, Xbox or the console platform may be experiencing an authentication or cloud-storage outage.
- Expired sign-in token: a suspended session, password change or long-running Quick Resume session can leave the simulator using invalid credentials.
- Account mismatch: the simulator, Xbox app, Game Bar, Steam or console may be using different Microsoft/Xbox identities.
- Blocked connection: VPNs, proxies, restrictive firewalls, DNS filters and an incorrect system clock can interfere with authentication.
- Save conflict: the local copy and cloud copy may both have changed, particularly after playing offline or using another device.
- Damaged local cache: less commonly, cached account or profile data on the device prevents a clean synchronisation.
The rolling cache, streamed scenery and Community add-ons are separate from the cloud profile. Deleting scenery or reinstalling aircraft is therefore not a sensible first fix for this error.
How do I fix the MSFS 2024 cloud save error safely?
The safest fix is to restore a clean account session and network connection before touching saved data.
- Do not reset or delete the save. Photograph or record the full error message, then stop launching MSFS 2024 on other devices until the conflict is resolved. Multiple sync attempts from different machines can make it harder to identify the newest copy.
- Fully close the simulator. Do not merely return to the dashboard or suspend it. On Xbox Series X|S, remove MSFS 2024 from Quick Resume, restart the console and launch it once from a fresh session.
- Check service availability. Check the official Microsoft/Xbox service status and your platform’s network status. If account or cloud services are unavailable, wait for recovery; reinstalling the simulator will not repair a server outage.
- Confirm the signed-in account. Make sure MSFS 2024 is using the Microsoft/Xbox profile that owns the expected cloud progress. On Windows, sign out and back into the Xbox app and Game Bar if the profile is stale. Our PC Xbox sign-in checks for MSFS cover hidden login windows, Gaming Services and conflicting credentials.
- Test unrestricted internet access. Set the device’s date and time automatically, restart the router, and temporarily disable any VPN, proxy or aggressive DNS filtering. A short test through another trusted connection can distinguish a local network block from an account problem. If the simulator also reports that it is offline, follow our MSFS online-service troubleshooting steps.
- Launch once and allow the sync to finish. Avoid repeatedly cancelling the opening screens. If MSFS offers a choice between local and cloud data, compare the device, timestamp and expected progress before selecting anything.
- Repair local application data only as a last step. On Windows, try the application’s Repair option before Reset; Steam users can verify the installed files. These actions can repair the application but cannot restore a damaged server profile. Do not clear local saved data until you know a valid cloud copy exists.
Which save should I choose after a cloud conflict?
Choose the copy that contains the most recent valid session, not automatically the one labelled “cloud”.
| Choice | Choose it when | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud save | Your last successful session was on another device, or this is a new installation with little or no local data. | An older cloud copy may replace newer progress made offline. |
| Local save | This device contains the newest completed session and it was played while cloud access was unavailable. | The local copy may overwrite newer progress uploaded by another device. |
| Exit without choosing | The timestamps are unclear, both copies look wrong, or you cannot identify the last device used. | No immediate progress is made, but this is safer than guessing and overwriting the good copy. |
After selecting a known-good copy, leave the simulator open on its main screen briefly so it can finish uploading. Do not immediately start the other device, as that can generate another conflict.
What changes on PC, Steam, Xbox and PS5?
The cloud profile is account-based, but each platform has a different local session and cache layer.
| Platform | Check first |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Store or Xbox app on PC | Confirm the Xbox app, Game Bar and simulator use the intended gaming profile. Repair Gaming Services or the application before resetting its data. |
| Steam on PC | Steam manages the installation, but the Microsoft/Xbox identity signed into the simulator controls its online profile. Use these Steam-to-Xbox connection checks if that link stalls or repeatedly asks you to sign in. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Fully quit the simulator, remove it from Quick Resume and restart the console. Never choose an option equivalent to deleting saved data everywhere when attempting to clear only a local copy. |
| PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro | Confirm the expected PSN profile and linked Microsoft account are active, then close the simulator completely. Do not unlink the Microsoft account as an initial troubleshooting step. |
Is the MSFS 2024 cloud save permanently lost?
Most unexpected cloud save errors are temporary authentication or synchronisation failures, so the save usually returns after the correct account reconnects. A reinstall rarely helps because it does not change the cloud copy stored against the profile.
If MSFS opens normally but controller bindings, assistance options or other preferences revert after every restart, that is a narrower configuration problem; use our guide to fix MSFS 2024 settings that will not stay saved. If the same cloud error persists across a clean network and fresh sign-in, record the exact wording, platform, account identifier and approximate time for Microsoft or platform support. Avoid further save deletion while the profile is being investigated.
