Yes, you can use a laptop as a second display for a flight simulator, but usually not by connecting an HDMI cable. A laptop’s HDMI or USB-C video port is normally output-only, not an input. Use Windows wireless display, desktop-extension software or a simulator’s network/web panels, choosing according to latency and content.
This applies broadly to PC simulators including Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX. The main distinction is between extending the simulator computer’s desktop and running a separate instrument or web interface on the laptop.
Why doesn’t an HDMI cable work between two laptops?
An HDMI cable usually fails because the ports on both computers are video outputs. Neither machine is accepting the other’s picture, so changing Windows display settings will not make the laptop appear as a monitor.
A few specialist laptops have a genuine HDMI input, but the specification must explicitly say HDMI input. An HDMI port, USB-C port or docking connector alone does not provide this function. Connecting two output ports is a mistake we see constantly.
Best ways to use a laptop as a second screen
Windows wireless display is the simplest true desktop-extension method, while networked instrument panels are usually better for an EFB, FMC, map or radio stack.

How do I extend a flight simulator onto a Windows laptop?
You can extend the desktop wirelessly when both Windows computers support Miracast and the receiving laptop has the Wireless Display feature available.
- Check the receiving laptop. Search Windows settings for
Projecting to this PC. Install the optional Wireless Display feature if Windows requests it. A message saying the device cannot receive Miracast normally indicates unsupported hardware or drivers. - Open the receiver. Enable projection and open the Wireless Display or Connect application on the laptop. Keep it running and connect the laptop to mains power.
- Connect from the simulator PC. Press
Win + K, select the laptop and approve the connection on the receiving machine. The simulator PC needs compatible Wi-Fi hardware even when its internet connection uses Ethernet. - Choose Extend. Press
Win + Pand selectExtend, not Duplicate. In Windows display settings, arrange the laptop on the correct side of the main monitor and select its native resolution. - Move suitable content. Detach a supported simulator instrument or move a chart, map, ATC or browser window onto the extended desktop. In Microsoft Flight Simulator, follow the specific procedure for detaching cockpit instruments onto another display.
Common failures and fixes
- The laptop does not appear: confirm that both computers support Miracast, enable their Wi-Fi adaptors, update graphics and wireless drivers, and make sure the receiver application remains open.
- Both screens show the same picture: Windows is duplicating the display. Use
Win + Pand selectExtend. - The instrument will not move: not every 3D cockpit gauge can become a separate operating-system window. Use the simulator’s pop-out or undock function first.
- The picture is soft or delayed: select the laptop’s native resolution, reduce wireless congestion and avoid using the link for rapid outside-view movement.
- A web panel cannot connect: put both computers on the same local network and permit the simulator or panel service through the host PC’s firewall.
- The touchscreen does nothing: wireless desktop extension does not always pass touch input correctly. A browser-based panel designed for touch is usually the better choice.
What should I display on the laptop?
A laptop works best for information that tolerates a little latency and does not need to be rendered as another full outside view.
- Electronic flight bag, charts and checklists
- FMC or CDU interface
- Moving map and flight tracking
- ATC, weather or flight-planning windows
- Popped-out navigation, engine or radio panels
A simulator-specific remote panel can be more useful than extending Windows because it gives the laptop its own interactive interface. Will a laptop second screen reduce flight simulator FPS?
A static browser, chart or network panel usually has a modest effect, but popped-out rendered instruments and additional simulator views can reduce frame rate noticeably. The main PC still renders those views and may also encode the extended desktop for wireless transmission; the laptop does not become a second graphics card.

Console limits
Xbox and PlayStation do not provide a Windows-style extended desktop, so a laptop cannot become an extra simulator display through an ordinary cable or Miracast connection. Screen streaming only copies the main image.
