Learn how to use night vision goggles in DCS World, bind NVG controls, select helmet equipment, adjust gain and fix common problems.
To use night vision goggles in DCS World, bind the module's NVG toggle and gain controls, make sure the aircraft has goggles fitted, dim the cockpit lights, then switch them on and reduce gain until bright lights stop blooming. Availability, control names and helmet-equipment rules vary by aircraft and seat.
How do I bind the DCS NVG controls?
Bind the NVG commands in the control layer for the exact aircraft and crew position you intend to fly. DCS stores assignments separately for each module, and multicrew positions can have different controls.
- Open the controls menu: From the main menu, open Options and select Controls.
- Select the correct module and seat: Choose the aircraft rather than a generic control layer. For a multicrew helicopter or aircraft, select the pilot, gunner or other relevant position.
- Search for the commands: Search for both
night visionandNVG. Bind the goggles toggle plus gain increase and decrease where the module provides them. - Check for conflicting assignments: Clear unwanted duplicate bindings and put the toggle somewhere you can reach without looking away from the cockpit.

Some modules expose only an on/off command, while others provide separate gain buttons. If there is no gain axis command, bind buttons rather than trying to force a rotary controller into an unsupported axis.
How do you equip night vision goggles before take-off?
The NVG toggle works only when the selected aircraft and mission provide night-vision equipment. Starting a mission at night does not automatically give every aircraft goggles.
Some modules spawn with NVGs ready to use. In others, particularly where a helmet-mounted sight and NVGs are alternative fittings, you must select the goggles through the ground-crew communications menu while parked. Look for an option referring to the helmet-mounted device and choose NVG; the exact wording and communication requirements depend on the module.
Ground crew may require the aircraft to be stopped and a working intercom connection, or the canopy to be open. If the menu option is missing, the aircraft may not support a swap, the mission may have fixed the equipment, or you may already have the only available device fitted. An airborne start normally gives you the helmet equipment chosen by the mission.

How should I set NVG gain and cockpit lighting?
Use the lowest gain that still reveals the horizon, terrain and nearby objects. Excessive gain amplifies cockpit lighting, moonlight and airfield lights until the image blooms and useful detail disappears.
- Prepare the cockpit: Turn down white floodlighting, instrument backlighting, the HUD and bright multifunction displays. Select an NVG-compatible cockpit-lighting mode if the aircraft models one.
- Switch on the goggles: Use the bound NVG toggle only after reducing the brightest nearby light sources.
- Set the gain: Raise it until dark terrain becomes usable, then back it down if runway lights, the HUD or illuminated buildings form large halos.
- Adjust as conditions change: Moonlit terrain usually needs less gain than an overcast, moonless mission. Expect to make small corrections during approach or when leaving a brightly lit area.
NVGs amplify available light; they are not thermal sensors and cannot reveal heat signatures or see through opaque cloud and fog. Cockpit labels can also be harder to read because the goggles are intended primarily for viewing outside. Dim lighting and sensible gain work better than simply maximising brightness.

Why are night vision goggles not working?
Most NVG failures come from the wrong control layer, unavailable helmet equipment or lighting that overwhelms the image.
