Learn how to use weather radar in X-Plane 12, set range, tilt and gain, read returns, and fix a blank WXR display in default or add-on aircraft.
To use weather radar in X-Plane 12, load weather containing precipitation, power the aircraft’s avionics, select WXR or weather on the navigation display, then set a useful range and antenna tilt. Controls differ by aircraft: expect an EFIS button, an MFD softkey, or a dedicated radar panel.
X-Plane 12 supplies the weather environment, but each aircraft determines how its radar is controlled and displayed. Some cockpits have a fully adjustable airborne radar, some provide only a map overlay, and others have non-functional radar controls.
How do I turn on weather radar in X-Plane 12?
The reliable sequence is to load precipitation, power the radar, select weather mode and enable the overlay on the appropriate cockpit display.
- Load weather containing precipitation. Use a rainy or stormy manual-weather configuration, or follow our guide to loading and checking live weather in X-Plane 12. Clouds without modelled precipitation will usually produce no radar return.
- Power the aircraft and its avionics. In a cold-and-dark aircraft, the radar may depend on an avionics bus, generator or display power that is not yet available.
- Set the radar to weather mode. Move its control from OFF or STBY to WX or ON. Airliners may have a dedicated radar panel as well as a separate WXR button on the EFIS panel; both may need to be set correctly.

- Select a useful range. About 40–80 NM gives an airliner crew a strategic view in cruise, while 10–20 NM is more useful near an airport. Do not leave the display at such a short range that developing cells remain off-screen.
- Adjust tilt and gain. Start near zero tilt and use automatic gain when available. Sweep the antenna slightly up and down rather than assuming one tilt setting shows the whole storm.
For realistic operation, keep the transmitter in standby while parked close to people or equipment, then select weather mode after leaving the stand. The simulator cannot cause a real RF hazard, but aircraft procedures may still enforce this logic.
Which weather radar settings should I use?
Start with WX mode, automatic gain and a medium range, then adjust antenna tilt to examine different vertical slices of the weather.

The exact tilt angle depends on altitude, range, aircraft attitude and how the aircraft developer modelled the beam. A fixed zero-degree tilt can scan above nearby precipitation in a climb or fill the display with ground returns when looking down from cruise.
What do the weather radar colours mean?
Most X-Plane 12 radar displays use green for lighter precipitation, yellow or amber for stronger precipitation, and red for the most intense returns.
- Green: lighter precipitation.
- Yellow or amber: moderate or stronger precipitation requiring caution.
- Red: intense precipitation that should be avoided rather than crossed.
- Magenta: where supported, an extreme return or a special hazard indication defined by that aircraft.
Use the legend and documentation supplied with the aircraft because add-ons can implement the colours differently. Black space does not always mean clear air: the beam may be above or below the precipitation, and a detailed radar simulation may also model attenuation or radar shadowing behind a strong cell.
Why is my X-Plane 12 weather radar blank?
A blank weather radar usually means there is no modelled precipitation, the transmitter is still in standby, the overlay is disabled, or the antenna is scanning the wrong altitude.
- Confirm that rain or another form of detectable precipitation is actually present; a dark cloud alone is not enough.
- Try TEST mode if the aircraft provides it. A visible test pattern points to a weather, range or tilt problem rather than a dead display.
- Check electrical power, display brightness, radar mode and the separate WXR overlay button.
- Shorten the display range and sweep the tilt through both positive and negative settings.
- Verify that the aircraft supports working radar. A labelled switch or softkey can be decorative or unimplemented.
- For add-on aircraft, use its cockpit clickspots or documented commands. Custom systems may ignore X-Plane’s general keyboard or joystick assignments.
If the returns changed unexpectedly after moving the simulator clock, check how simulator time interacts with real-world weather data. Visual clouds and radar returns can also differ slightly when an aircraft uses a simplified or custom weather display.
Does weather radar show clouds, turbulence or terrain?
Standard weather radar primarily shows modelled precipitation, not every cloud, and turbulence or lightning indications appear only when the aircraft specifically supports them.
A TERR overlay is terrain data, not weather radar. Likewise, a weather or NEXRAD layer on a GA moving map may be a datalink-style presentation rather than a tilt-controlled airborne radar. Never treat a blank area inside a visible storm cloud as proof that the route is clear.
