Learn how to enable terrain radar in X-Plane 12, read terrain colours, use G1000 or airliner controls, and fix blank or unavailable displays.
To use terrain radar in X-Plane 12, power the aircraft’s avionics, open its MFD or navigation display, select the map page, and enable TERRAIN or TERR—often MAP > TERRAIN on the X-Plane G1000. Set the range and read the colours as terrain height relative to your aircraft.
Does X-Plane 12 have built-in terrain radar?
X-Plane 12 provides terrain data and supports terrain-aware avionics, but it does not put one universal terrain-radar control in every aircraft. The display and its controls depend on the aircraft’s fitted avionics and how completely the developer has modelled them.
What simmers call terrain radar is usually a database-driven terrain-awareness display, not radar scanning the ground. It combines the aircraft’s position and altitude with elevation data to highlight threatening terrain. It normally does not detect trees, buildings, masts or other scenery objects.

How do I turn on the X-Plane 12 terrain display?
- Confirm that the aircraft supports it. A weather-radar screen or ordinary moving map does not automatically provide terrain awareness. Look for a TERRAIN or TERR control rather than assuming every MFD has the feature.
- Power and initialise the avionics. Switch on the required electrical buses and allow the GPS, flight-management system or inertial navigation system to establish a valid position.

- Use the aircraft’s TERR switch in an airliner. This is normally on the EFIS or display-control panel and overlays terrain on the navigation display. Some aircraft model only the visual overlay, while others also simulate TAWS or EGPWS alerts.
- Choose a practical map range. A shorter range exposes nearby ridges and valleys more clearly; a longer range gives route context. Confirm that a TERRAIN or TERR annunciation appears.
- Check that terrain inhibit is off. An active inhibit mode may suppress alerts or parts of the terrain presentation. Leave it in its normal operating state unless reproducing a specific aircraft procedure.
What do the terrain radar colours mean?
Terrain colours represent threat relative to the aircraft, not simply the ground’s real-world colour. A common G1000-style presentation uses the following approximate scheme, although airliner systems and third-party aircraft can use different thresholds.

TOPO and TERRAIN are not always the same mode. TOPO usually provides general elevation relief, while TERRAIN highlights ground according to its vertical relationship to the aircraft. Exact alert envelopes can also change with flight phase, configuration and the avionics implementation.

Why is X-Plane 12 terrain radar blank or unavailable?
A blank terrain display is not always a fault: terrain well below the alert threshold can appear black or unshaded. Check the annunciations before treating an empty display as missing data.
- No TERRAIN control: the selected aircraft probably does not model a terrain display. A working moving map or weather radar does not prove that it does.
- TERR N/A or TERR FAIL: confirm that the avionics are powered, the navigation system has a valid position and any required alignment has completed.
- Colourful map but no threat shading: TOPO may be selected instead of TERRAIN.
- Aural warnings but no map: the GPWS or TAWS alert channel may be active while the visual overlay is disabled or not modelled.

- Third-party panel not loading: confirm that the add-on explicitly supports X-Plane 12 and was installed in the location specified by its documentation. For general plugins, that is commonly beneath

If the display appears vertically wrong, check the aircraft’s altitude and position sources. Some implementations use geometric or GPS-derived height, while others integrate barometric or aircraft-specific data, so changing the altimeter setting will not correct every discrepancy.
Is terrain radar the same as weather radar?
No. Terrain mode compares your position and altitude with elevation data; weather radar depicts simulated precipitation and storm intensity. Use the terrain display as an awareness aid rather than a steering command. If the aircraft produces an urgent warning, follow that aircraft’s published terrain-escape procedure instead of trying to thread between coloured cells on the map.
