How do I set up and use live weather in X-Plane 12?

Set up X-Plane 12 live weather, confirm it is updating, compare it with METARs, and fix stale, missing or inaccurate conditions.

To use live weather in X-Plane 12, open the Weather settings before or during a flight, change the weather mode to Real Weather or Match real-world conditions, and keep the simulator online while it downloads data. Allow the first update to finish, then confirm the reported wind, pressure and visibility at your airport.

How do I enable live weather in X-Plane 12?

X-Plane 12's built-in live weather requires an internet connection and the real-weather mode; it does not need a separate plug-in or account.

  1. Connect X-Plane to the internet. Check that a firewall, security tool, VPN or restricted network is not blocking the simulator's outgoing traffic.
  2. Open Flight Configuration. Select the Weather tile or weather customisation control for the flight you are preparing.
  3. Select Real Weather. Depending on the X-Plane 12 build, the equivalent option may be labelled Match real-world conditions.
  4. Wait for the download. Let any loading or download indicator clear before judging the conditions. The first update can take longer than an ordinary weather refresh.
  5. Load the flight. Leave real weather selected so X-Plane can refresh conditions automatically as the flight continues.

You can reopen the weather controls during a flight to inspect the conditions or change to manual weather. Avoid repeatedly switching modes while a download is in progress, because that makes a valid update look as though it failed.

Real weather represents the latest available conditions, not historical weather for any date entered in the simulator. Our explanation of how simulator time changes interact with live weather covers when present time or manual weather is the better choice.

How can I tell whether live weather is working?

The quickest check is to compare X-Plane's airport conditions with a recent METAR from the same reporting station.

  • Check that the surface wind direction and speed are broadly similar.
  • Compare the QNH or altimeter setting, allowing for unit conversion and rounding.
  • Look for the same general visibility and precipitation category.
  • Compare the lowest significant cloud layer, but do not expect identical cloud shapes or coverage at every point around the airport.

The aircraft's simulated ATIS or AWOS is the operational reference for the weather X-Plane is actually applying. If METAR groups are unfamiliar, our guide to decoding METAR wind, visibility, cloud and pressure data explains what to compare.

Why does X-Plane 12 weather not match the METAR exactly?

X-Plane 12 live weather should resemble the reported conditions, but it is not a literal METAR pasted across the whole airport area.

The simulator builds a three-dimensional atmosphere from downloaded observations and forecast data, then interpolates conditions between reporting points and across altitude. See how X-Plane processes real-world weather data for the distinction between airport observations and wider atmospheric data.

  • Report age: the METAR you are reading and X-Plane's latest downloaded cycle may have different issue times.
  • Location: your aircraft may be several miles from the weather station or on terrain at a different elevation.
  • Interpolation: wind, pressure, temperature and cloud layers are blended between data points.
  • Simulation limits: cloud placement, visibility and local gusts cannot reproduce every small-scale feature in the real atmosphere.
  • Rounding: cockpit instruments, ATIS broadcasts and METARs may express the same condition with different units or precision.

How do I fix live weather that is not downloading or updating?

Failed updates are most often caused by a blocked network request, an interfering weather plug-in or a stale simulator session.

  1. Confirm the weather mode. Make sure a saved flight or add-on has not returned the weather setting to Manual.
  2. Check the connection. Temporarily test without a VPN, proxy or restrictive firewall rule, while keeping normal system security enabled.
  3. Correct the computer clock. An inaccurate system date or time can interfere with online services and make downloaded data appear stale.
  4. Disable weather injectors. Test with X-Plane's built-in system alone. Two weather engines trying to control the same atmosphere can produce resets or rapidly changing conditions.
  5. Request a clean update. Switch to manual weather, return to real weather and wait. If that fails, restart X-Plane and test at a well-reported major airport.
  6. Inspect the log. Open Log.txt in the main X-Plane folder and search for weather, download or network errors. The messages can distinguish a connection failure from an add-on conflict.

If several airports remain unchanged after those checks, the weather service may be temporarily unavailable. Manual weather is the dependable fallback until a later download succeeds.

When should I use manual weather instead?

Use real weather for present-day flying and changing conditions; use manual weather when repeatability or exact control matters more than matching the latest reports.

Weather modeBest used forMain limitation
Real WeatherPresent-day flights, changing en-route conditions and unscripted operationsRequires online data and does not recreate historical weather
Manual WeatherApproach practice, crosswind training, testing icing or recreating a specific scenarioConditions remain artificial until you edit them

For a training exercise, set the required wind, visibility, cloud and runway conditions manually rather than waiting for suitable real weather. If you use a third-party weather injector, run only that injector or X-Plane's built-in live system as instructed; leaving both active is a common source of conflicting updates.
