Find VATSIM events and staffed ATC in Europe using the official event calendar, live controller map, UTC times and top-down coverage checks.
To find VATSIM events in Europe, use VATSIM’s official Events calendar for scheduled fly-ins, then check the network’s live map or your pilot client shortly before departure to confirm who is online. Read times as UTC unless stated otherwise, and check area controllers as well as tower positions because VATSIM uses top-down ATC coverage.
This is independent of simulator: Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX users all see the same VATSIM events and controller data. The event calendar tells you what is planned; the live network status tells you what is actually staffed.
Where are European VATSIM events listed?
The official VATSIM Events calendar is the best single place to find planned European ATC coverage. Europe is divided among regional organisations, divisions and local vACCs, but their larger public events are collected in the network calendar.
- Open the Events section on the official VATSIM site and review the relevant date.
- Look for European ICAO codes, countries, city names or regional event descriptions. An event may involve one airport, several airports or an entire cross-border route.
- Open the full briefing and check the featured airports, operating direction, start and finish times, suggested routes and expected traffic flow.
- Check whether booking is required. Some events use departure slots or pilot bookings; others allow pilots to arrive without one.
Use UTC, also called Zulu time, when planning. A mistake we see often is converting a published UTC time twice or overlooking daylight-saving differences between European countries. Event listings may also concentrate staffing around an arrival or departure wave rather than maintain equal coverage for the whole period.
How do I tell which European ATC is staffed now?
The live VATSIM map and the controller list inside your pilot client show which positions are online at that moment. We recommend checking once while planning and again immediately before connecting.
- Search for the airport’s ICAO code on the network map.
- Inspect nearby positions ending in
DEL,GND,TWR,APP,DEPorCTR. - Read the controller information where available. It may identify covered airports, sector boundaries, runway configuration or special contact instructions.
- Confirm through your pilot client after connecting, obtain the ATIS and call the appropriate active position.

Does a centre controller cover an unstaffed airport?
A centre or approach controller may cover lower positions through VATSIM’s top-down system, provided the airport is inside that controller’s airspace and workload permits it. An airport is not necessarily uncontrolled just because no tower callsign appears.

Top-down coverage is not automatic in every circumstance. Sector splits, local procedures and controller workload can limit it, so read the controller information rather than calling any nearby centre frequency. If uncertain, listen first and ask briefly whether the controller covers your airport.
Why does an advertised event appear unstaffed?
An event can look unstaffed because its UTC window has not started, the traffic wave is elsewhere, the relevant sector uses an unfamiliar callsign or staffing changed after publication. The event listing is a plan, not a guarantee that every advertised position will remain online throughout.
- Recheck the date and UTC conversion. Events around midnight can fall on a different local calendar date.
- Refresh the live map. A map snapshot may not reflect a controller who has just connected or disconnected.
- Inspect area sectors. A
CTRorAPPcontroller may be providing top-down service without a separate tower position. - Read the event briefing again. Staffing may focus on departure airports first and arrival airports later.
- Treat the airport as uncontrolled if nobody covers it. Follow VATSIM’s advisory-frequency procedures and do not call an unrelated controller merely because that position is online.
