Find airports with active VATSIM controllers, decode ATC callsigns, understand top-down coverage, and avoid stale maps or ATIS-only listings.
To find airports with active VATSIM controllers, open VATSIM’s live network map before launching your flight, zoom to the region you want, and inspect the connected ATC positions. Prefer an airport showing tower, ground or approach coverage; a centre controller may also provide airport service under VATSIM’s top-down system.
For general flight simulation, this planning method is simulator-independent. The live map finds staffed airports worldwide, while your VATSIM pilot client confirms which controllers are within radio range after you connect.
Where should I check before loading the simulator?
Use VATSIM’s live network map for global planning rather than relying only on the controller list inside your pilot client.
- Open the live network map and zoom to the country or region where you want to fly.
- Look for connected ATC callsigns around an airport, such as
_GND,_TWR,_APPor_CTR. - Select the controller and read the displayed frequency, sector and remarks. An approach or centre callsign may cover several airports and may not contain your airport’s ICAO code.
- Check live status rather than bookings. A scheduled controller is expected later; only a connected position confirms that ATC is online.
- Refresh before connecting, because controllers are volunteers and may close their positions without warning.

Which VATSIM positions count as active airport coverage?
The callsign suffix tells you what service is staffed, but VATSIM’s top-down hierarchy means a higher position can often cover vacant positions beneath it.

Will a centre controller handle my airport?
A centre controller may handle your departure or arrival from the ground upwards when no lower controller is online, provided the airport is inside that controller’s sector. Do not assume that a nearby _CTR label covers every airport visible on the map.
Inspect the sector boundary and controller remarks, then contact the centre frequency if your airport appears covered. The controller will tell you if the airport is outside the sector or cannot be covered because of workload. How do I choose an airport likely to stay controlled?
Choose an airport with layered coverage rather than chasing a single controller symbol.
- Best chance of continuous service: an airport showing tower or ground plus approach and centre positions.
- Good for a short flight: two airports inside the same staffed approach or centre area.
- Better for a first VATSIM flight: a moderately quiet controlled airport, not the busiest hub on the map. Our observer-mode and quiet-route training advice helps with that choice.
- Not a guarantee: controller connection time, event listings and bookings do not promise that a position will remain open until you arrive.
When the map and radio disagree
A controller shown on the map may have disconnected, may be outside your radio range, or may use a regional callsign you did not recognise.
- Refresh the map and inspect the controller details again.
- Confirm that the frequency is tuned to the active COM radio rather than the standby side.
- Check that the correct COM radio is selected for reception and that its volume is audible.
- Make sure your pilot client is connected and your aircraft is not still positioned hundreds of miles from the airport you inspected.
- Do not treat an ATIS station or a future booking as an active controller.
If the position disappears before departure, follow the applicable uncontrolled-airport and advisory-frequency procedures rather than continuing to call an offline controller.
