Virtual airline careers turn simulator flights into assigned jobs with routes, aircraft rules, tracking and persistent progress. You book or accept a flight, fly it under the operator’s rules, then submit a pilot report for hours, rank or virtual pay. They are hobby systems, not paid aviation employment.
What counts as a virtual aviation job?
A virtual aviation job is a simulated flight assignment or voluntary community role, not employment with a real airline. Across general flight simulation, airline careers usually take one of three forms:

Some virtual airlines also advertise staff jobs such as dispatcher, fleet manager, events organiser or hub manager. These are normally voluntary community positions. Unless real compensation is stated explicitly, neither flying assignments nor staff roles should be treated as paid work or professional aviation experience.
How does a virtual airline job work?
A virtual airline job is normally one flight sector that must be booked, flown and reported under the organisation’s rules. The typical workflow is:
- Choose an assignment. Book a scheduled route, charter or tour leg. Check the flight number, departure and destination ICAO codes, permitted aircraft types and any rank restriction.
- Read the operating rules. Confirm whether pauses, simulator rate, aircraft substitutions, mid-flight saves and online ATC are allowed. A mistake we see constantly is assuming that every airline applies the same rules.
- Prepare the correct aircraft. Load at the booked airport with an accepted model or variant, then set fuel and payload. A matching repaint does not necessarily mean the underlying aircraft type is valid.
- Start the tracker before moving. An ACARS-style client reads simulator telemetry and associates it with the booked job. While parked, verify that it recognises the simulator, departure airport and aircraft.
- Fly the sector. Depending on the airline, the client may record block times, route, altitude, fuel use, overspeeds, pauses, slewing, simulator rate and landing rate.
- Finish at the destination. Park at the booked airport and meet the tracker’s completion conditions. These commonly include the parking brake being set and engines being shut down.
- Submit the PIREP. The pilot report may be approved automatically or reviewed by staff. Once accepted, it adds the flight, hours, points or virtual earnings to your record.

Does Flight Simulator 2020 have a career mode?
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 does not include a persistent airline Career Mode with jobs, company ownership and pilot progression. It has structured activities and challenges, but a Flight Simulator 2020 career requires a virtual airline or an external career application.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Career Mode is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 remains a PC and Xbox title and was never released for PlayStation.

How do Windows flight simulator job applications work?
A Windows flight job application normally runs beside the simulator and connects through a supported API, plug-in or connector. It downloads an assignment, monitors the flight and uploads the result to its own career or airline database; it is not a Windows operating-system job.
This approach offers the broadest choice of generated contracts and ACARS clients, but compatibility must be checked against the exact simulator. If a tracker cannot connect, confirm that its required connector is installed and enabled, then make sure the simulator and tracker are running at the same Windows permission level.
How do you assign a pilot in MSFS 2024?
MSFS 2024 does not require you to hire and assign a named pilot; you make an eligible company-owned aircraft available to simulated crew. In the company’s aircraft management area, select an aircraft you do not intend to fly yourself and enable the option labelled Crew Available.
This makes the aircraft eligible for passive company operations. You do not select the crew member, route or individual flight, and the aircraft will not become a visible AI service that you can follow around the world.
If the crew option is missing or unavailable, first confirm that the aircraft belongs to one of your companies rather than being borrowed for an employee mission. Also check its maintenance state and whether it is already committed as your active aircraft. Passive revenue is not guaranteed: the career system’s eligibility and accounting rules apply, while maintenance and insurance costs can reduce or exceed the income.
What do ranks, virtual pay and aircraft unlocks mean?
Ranks, virtual pay and aircraft unlocks only affect the career system that awards them. They have no cash value, do not count towards a real pilot licence and normally cannot be transferred to another airline or application.
- Ranks can depend on accepted hours, completed sectors, examinations or points.
- Aircraft access may be limited by rank, type qualification, route category or fleet policy.
- Virtual pay may be a score, or it may fund fuel, maintenance, leasing and aircraft purchases within an economy.
- Awards and tours recognise specific routes, events, destinations or operational targets.
- Staff positions are generally voluntary roles concerned with schedules, membership, fleets or events.
Do not choose a career solely because its fleet includes your favourite airliner. If you want to fly that aircraft immediately, check the rank threshold, substitution policy and type restrictions before joining.
Do virtual airline jobs require multiplayer or a PC?
Most virtual airline jobs do not require multiplayer or online ATC, but many automated tracking clients do require a Windows PC. Internet access may be needed to retrieve assignments and upload reports even when the actual flight is completed offline.
Xbox and PlayStation pilots can use the native MSFS 2024 Career Mode. They can also join a virtual airline that accepts manual PIREPs or another console-compatible reporting method, but a conventional Windows ACARS executable cannot run on the console or read its telemetry directly. Opening an airline’s website in a console browser does not make its recorder compatible.
If an airline requires an online network event, use the booked callsign and follow that organisation’s network policy. Multiplayer, live traffic and AI traffic can add surrounding aircraft, but none of them creates career jobs or awards virtual-airline credit by itself.
Why was my virtual airline flight rejected or not recorded?
Most rejected or missing flights result from a mismatch between the booking, simulator and tracking state rather than poor flying. Check the recorded data before repeating a long sector.

Which flight simulator career system should you choose?
Choose the system whose tracking requirements and operating rules fit how you actually fly, not the one advertising the largest route map.
- Choose a built-in career for simple setup, native missions, integrated progression and dependable console compatibility.
- Choose a virtual airline for real-world-style schedules, group events, pilot ranks and human operational policies.
- Choose an external career or economy application for solo jobs, generated contracts, flexible aircraft use and financial management.
