When is VR better for Microsoft Flight Simulator?
VR is the better choice when immersion, scale and spatial judgement are your main priorities. Looking naturally through a turn, judging the flare and checking a helicopter's position relative to the ground all feel more intuitive when the world surrounds you at life-size scale.
VR particularly suits:
- VFR and sightseeing flights, where looking outside is central to the experience.
- Helicopters, because depth perception helps with hovering and confined-area approaches.
- General aviation and circuit practice, where natural head movement improves runway awareness.
- Short, focused sessions in which immersion matters more than access to external tools.
A headset's advertised resolution does not translate directly into monitor-like clarity. Its pixels cover a wide field of view and are viewed through lenses, so fit, lens position, render resolution and the size of the optical sweet spot all affect readability. Do not assume motion controllers will replace a yoke, throttle or joystick. Mouse interaction is available, but physical flight controls are much easier to operate without seeing your hands; keyboard-heavy commands are the weakest part of the VR experience.
When is a monitor the better choice?
A monitor is better for airliner procedures, long flights, maximum image clarity and any setup that depends on charts or other applications. It also produces a smoother result on less powerful hardware.
Choose a monitor if you regularly:
- Fly instrument approaches or complex airliners with small cockpit displays.
- Enter flight plans, frequencies and data using the keyboard.
- Keep charts, checklists, ATC software or tutorials visible beside the simulator.
- Fly for several hours or experience VR motion discomfort.
- Record or stream flights and need straightforward window management.
An ultrawide display increases peripheral vision, while multiple displays can provide more cockpit space at an additional performance cost. Optional head tracking is a useful middle ground: it preserves monitor clarity and visible controls while allowing natural view movement.
Platform also matters. Xbox Series X|S does not support Microsoft Flight Simulator VR. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is available on PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, with PSVR2 support delivered through a free update in 2026; Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 was never released for PlayStation.
How much more demanding is VR than a monitor?
VR is substantially more demanding because Microsoft Flight Simulator must generate a low-latency stereoscopic view at sufficient clarity for both eyes. A PC that runs the simulator well on a monitor may still produce stutters, blurred instruments or uncomfortable head movement in VR.

The most common mistake is carrying maximum monitor settings straight into VR. Other frequent problems include raising headset and in-simulator render scaling together, testing only in an undemanding rural area, or blaming the simulator for blur caused by an incorrectly positioned headset.
- Adjust one resolution control at a time so you can identify its actual cost and benefit.
- Fit the headset before changing software; poor lens alignment can make the entire cockpit look soft.

Can you switch between VR and a monitor?
Yes. On PC, Microsoft Flight Simulator can switch between its normal display and VR mode using the assigned VR command, so you do not have to commit permanently to one format.
A practical arrangement is to prepare the flight and enter data on the monitor, switch to VR for take-off and hand-flying, then return to the monitor for lengthy cruise management. Choose VR first if you already have a capable PC, mainly fly VFR aircraft or helicopters, and value cockpit presence above instrument sharpness. Choose a monitor first for airliners, IFR procedures, long sessions, console play or the clearest image at a given hardware budget.
