For Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, AMD’s Ryzen X3D processors are generally the best gaming choice because their large 3D V-Cache helps at CPU-limited airports and in complex aircraft. Intel remains fully suitable, especially on an existing compatible platform, but the exact processor, generation, cooling and memory matter more than the badge.
This is not a simple AMD-versus-Intel brand contest. A modern Intel processor can outperform an older or lower-tier AMD chip, while a Ryzen X3D model can beat a more expensive processor with additional cores that MSFS cannot fully exploit.
Why does Ryzen X3D perform so well in MSFS 2024?
Ryzen X3D processors usually lead when MSFS 2024 is limited by its main rendering thread because their extra last-level cache keeps more frequently used data close to the CPU cores. That helps with terrain draw calls, traffic, glass-cockpit displays and detailed airport scenery.
MSFS 2024 distributes more work across multiple cores than its predecessor, but performance still does not scale directly with total core count. When is Intel the better choice?
Intel makes sense when a compatible motherboard provides a much cheaper upgrade, a complete Intel system offers better overall value, or your non-simulator applications favour a particular Intel processor.
Do not compare CPUs by clock speed or advertised core count alone. Intel’s performance and efficiency cores are not equivalent to the identically labelled cores on another processor, and AMD’s Ryzen 7, Ryzen 9 and X3D names describe different combinations of cache and core layout. How many CPU cores does MSFS 2024 need?
A modern eight-core-class processor is a sensible target for a fresh MSFS 2024 build, although a fast six-core, twelve-thread CPU can still run the simulator well. Additional cores help background applications and some simulator workloads, but twelve or sixteen cores do not guarantee higher frame rates.
Prioritise strong per-core performance, useful cache and sustained boost behaviour. Adequate cooling matters because a processor that reaches its thermal or power limit cannot maintain its advertised boost clocks during a long flight.
Use matched memory in the recommended channel configuration, and favour stability over an aggressive XMP or EXPO overclock. How can you tell whether a CPU upgrade will help?
A CPU upgrade will help when MSFS 2024 remains main-thread limited after the GPU workload has been reduced in a repeatable test.
- Create a repeatable scenario. Load the same aircraft, airport, weather and traffic conditions each time. Busy hubs and complex cockpits expose CPU limits better than an empty rural airfield.
- Check the base frame rate. Temporarily disable frame generation, V-Sync and any frame-rate cap. Generated frames can make the displayed number look healthy without removing the underlying CPU delay.
- Lower the GPU workload. Reduce render scaling or output resolution substantially. If performance rises sharply, the graphics card was the main limit; if it barely changes, investigate the CPU side.
- Inspect the frame times. Use the simulator’s developer FPS display and compare the MainThread and GPU readings. A consistently slower MainThread reading points to a processor or CPU-heavy-settings limit.
- Test CPU-heavy settings. Reduce Terrain Level of Detail, Objects Level of Detail and traffic density one at a time. A clear improvement confirms that draw calls or simulation work are contributing to the bottleneck.

Which CPU should you buy for MSFS 2024?
Choose a Ryzen X3D processor for a new, sim-first desktop when it fits the budget; choose Intel when the exact system is cheaper, better suited to your other workloads or preserves a worthwhile existing platform. If your present system is GPU-limited, spend nothing on the CPU until measurements show that it is actually holding MSFS 2024 back.
