Learn what VSN mods add to DCS World, how to install them correctly, which dependencies matter, and why a mod may not appear.
VSN mods are unofficial community aircraft add-ons for DCS World, ranging from AI-only models to flyable aircraft that reuse an existing DCS cockpit, avionics or flight model. Install each package in the correct Saved Games mod folder, preserve its internal folder structure, and check its readme for required modules and supported DCS versions.
What does a VSN mod add to DCS World?
A VSN mod is a third-party aircraft package, not an official DCS module or a special DCS file format. The VSN name identifies the community mod family; each aircraft can have different features, dependencies and installation requirements.
Some packages supply only an external model for AI use. Others are flyable but borrow the cockpit and systems of an existing DCS aircraft, commonly one from the Flaming Cliffs range. More developed packages may include custom cockpit or flight-model work, so never assume that two VSN aircraft offer the same fidelity.
Are VSN aircraft full-fidelity modules?
VSN aircraft are not automatically full-fidelity simply because they are flyable. A donor-based aircraft normally retains the donor module’s displays, sensors, controls and key bindings, even when the external model represents a completely different aeroplane.
This makes many VSN packages useful for mission variety, formation flying and less formal multiplayer, but cockpit procedures and weapon behaviour may not reproduce the represented aircraft exactly. Our overview of how community aircraft differ from official DCS modules explains the trade-offs in more detail.
How do I install a VSN mod?
Most VSN aircraft belong under Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft, although the package instructions take priority when additional technology, weapon or livery folders are supplied. For broader folder guidance, see our step-by-step DCS mod installation instructions.
- Read the included documentation. Check whether the aircraft is flyable or AI-only and identify any required official module, companion pack or shared asset.
- Extract the download. Do not leave the package inside its ZIP, RAR or 7z archive.
- Find the active Saved Games folder. It will commonly be
C:\Users\<Windows user>\Saved Games\DCS\. Installations retaining a separate branch name may instead use a folder such asDCS.openbeta. - Create the aircraft directory if necessary. The usual destination is
Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft\. - Remove an older release first. Move it completely outside the
Modsdirectory rather than merging files or merely renaming the folder in place. - Copy the extracted package folder. Its
entry.luafile should normally sit directly inside that folder, not inside a second identically named directory. - Install any separately supplied components. Use
Mods\tech,Saved Games\DCS\Liveriesor another location only when the package documentation explicitly requires it. - Restart DCS World and test it. Open the Mission Editor, select an appropriate country and aircraft, then check whether
PlayerorClientis available as the skill setting.
A common broken layout looks like Mods\aircraft\VSN-Aircraft\VSN-Aircraft\entry.lua. Move the inner package up one level so that DCS can find its entry file. Avoid installing into the main DCS World program directory unless the package specifically demands it, because updates and repairs can remove or overwrite those files.
Do VSN mods require Flaming Cliffs?
Some VSN mods require a specified Flaming Cliffs aircraft or another official module, while AI-only or self-contained packages may not. Ownership requirements are package-specific and should be confirmed before installation.
| VSN package type | Likely requirement | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| AI-only aircraft | Usually no donor cockpit, though shared assets may be required | The aircraft can be assigned to AI but has no usable Player or Client slot |
| Donor-based flyable aircraft | The official aircraft named in the documentation | Uses the donor’s cockpit, avionics, controls and parts of its flight or weapon implementation |
| Self-contained flyable aircraft | Base DCS World unless another dependency is listed | Features and fidelity vary substantially between packages |
A missing donor module can produce several symptoms: the aircraft may not load, may have no functional cockpit or may be restricted to AI use. Installing unrelated Flaming Cliffs aircraft will not help; the exact dependency named by the VSN package is the one that matters.
Why does the VSN aircraft not appear in DCS?
A VSN aircraft usually fails to appear because DCS is scanning the wrong folder, the archive created an extra directory level, a dependency is missing or the mod is incompatible with the installed DCS build.
- Check the Saved Games variant: DCS may be reading
Saved Games\DCSwhile the mod sits underDCS.openbeta, or vice versa. - Inspect the package root: confirm that
entry.luais inside the aircraft’s top-level folder. - Review Mission Editor filters: the aircraft may be assigned only to certain countries, dates or coalitions. Disable restrictive historical filtering while testing.
- Try the correct skill setting: an AI-only aircraft will not offer a flyable Player or Client slot.
- Remove duplicate releases: two versions of the same package can load conflicting Lua definitions or assets.
- Read the DCS log: inspect
Saved Games\DCS\Logs\dcs.logfor lines naming the package, a missing dependency or a Lua loading error.
If the problem began after a simulator update, perform a clean installation of a release confirmed for that DCS build rather than copying new files over the old version. Our guide to checking DCS mod compatibility after updates covers isolation tests and Lua-related failures. A standard DCS repair does not reinstall or correct a mod stored under Saved Games.
Can VSN mods be used in multiplayer?
VSN mods can work in multiplayer when the server permits them and the required package versions are installed where needed. The server’s mission, integrity-check rules and dependency requirements determine whether a particular aircraft can be used.
Pilots occupying a VSN aircraft slot should use the same release as the server. Other clients may also need the package to display the model and assets correctly. A mod that works in a solo mission can still be rejected by a protected server, so test it offline first and follow the server operator’s approved-mod policy.
