What is a weather vane, and how does it work?

A weather vane is a freely rotating instrument that shows the direction the wind is coming from. Its larger tail is pushed downwind, turning the pointer into the wind; fixed compass markers show the corresponding direction. It indicates direction, not wind speed, and needs clean, unobstructed airflow.

In Aviation & Real-World Flying, we treat a weather vane—also written as one word, weathervane—as a simple local wind-direction indicator. A rooster-shaped weathercock works on exactly the same principle.

How does a weather vane work?

A weather vane works because the wind exerts more turning force on its broad tail than on its narrow pointer.

The vane sits on a low-friction vertical spindle. When wind strikes it from the side, pressure on the tail creates a turning moment because the aerodynamic centre of pressure lies behind the pivot. The tail swings downwind until the vane's long axis is roughly parallel with the airflow and the pointer faces upwind.

As the vane aligns, the sideways force and turning moment decrease. A well-balanced vane therefore settles quickly, although gusty wind may make it oscillate continuously.

Which way does a weather vane point?

On a conventional weather vane, the arrow or narrow end points towards the direction from which the wind is blowing.

If the pointer faces west, the wind is coming from the west and travelling towards the east. Aviation uses the same convention: a wind reported as 270° is a westerly wind, not a wind heading west. The broad tail points where the air is going.

The fixed N, E, S and W markers must be aligned correctly when the vane is installed. The rotating vane senses airflow only; it cannot determine north by itself. For ordinary cardinal directions, the north marker should be aligned with geographic north unless a specific local reference is required.

Does a weather vane measure wind speed?

No, a weather vane shows wind direction but does not measure wind speed.

A weather vane alone cannot provide a crosswind component because that calculation needs wind speed as well as direction and runway heading. This is why airfields use windsocks and instrumented weather sensors rather than relying on a vane alone.

Why can a weather vane show the wrong direction?

Most incorrect weather-vane readings come from installation, maintenance or interpretation errors rather than the basic design.

  • Reading the tail: The broad tail shows where the wind is going. Mistaking it for the pointer produces a 180° error.
  • Obstructed airflow: Buildings, trees, roof ridges and hangars create turbulence and wind eddies. The vane should be placed in clear airflow rather than directly behind an obstruction.
  • A stiff pivot: Corrosion, dirt, ice or worn bearings can stop the vane responding to light wind.
  • An unlevel spindle: If the rotation axis is not vertical, gravity may pull the heavier side towards one position and create a persistent false indication.
  • Misaligned compass markers: A correctly moving vane still gives the wrong named direction if its north marker was installed incorrectly or has moved.
  • Calm or variable wind: In very light conditions, friction may hold the previous direction. Gusts can also make the vane swing faster than a useful reading can be taken.

Even a correctly installed vane displays airflow at its precise location and height. An official weather report may use an averaged observation from a better-exposed sensor elsewhere on the airfield, so small differences are normal.

Can pilots and flight simmers rely on a weather vane?

Pilots and simmers should treat a weather vane as a local directional cue, not as the sole source of runway wind information.

In real aviation, compare it with the windsock, an airfield weather report and any wind information supplied by air traffic control. At an unattended airfield, visual indicators help with runway selection, but nearby terrain and obstacles may produce different wind at each end. Once the likely runway is established, use the wind to plan the circuit and apply drift corrections.

In a flight simulator, a weather vane may be animated by the weather engine, driven by simplified scenery logic or included as a static decorative object. If it disagrees with the reported wind, first check that you are reading the pointer rather than the tail, then compare the simulator's ATIS or weather display with the runway windsock. Use both direction and speed before applying the appropriate crosswind approach and landing controls.
