Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (KDFW) is jointly owned by the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth. It is governed and operated through the DFW Airport Board, whose professional management team runs the airport day to day. American Airlines is its dominant carrier and largest hub airline, but it does not own KDFW.
How is DFW Airport ownership structured?
KDFW is a public, municipally owned airport shared by Dallas and Fort Worth rather than a private company or federal facility. For our Aviation & Real-World Flying readers, the key distinction is that public ownership, airport management, airline operations and federal oversight are separate roles.
The DFW Airport Board has 12 seats. Dallas appoints seven voting directors and Fort Worth appoints four; a twelfth, non-voting seat rotates among the neighbouring cities of Coppell, Euless, Grapevine and Irving. The airport is not divided into separate Dallas-owned and Fort Worth-owned sections.
Who runs KDFW day to day?
The DFW Airport Board is the formal operator, while its chief executive, management team and airport employees handle everyday operations under the board’s authority. The board oversees policy, finances, major development and executive leadership.

Does American Airlines own DFW Airport?
No. American Airlines uses KDFW as its principal hub and has an exceptionally large operational presence, but terminal use, gate access and airline agreements do not transfer airport ownership.

KDFW sits between Dallas and Fort Worth and spans Dallas and Tarrant counties, but neither city owns it alone. Its location, postal identity and airport codes do not change the joint-ownership arrangement.
