Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight is called FS9 because it is the ninth major PC release in Microsoft’s original Flight Simulator line. FS2004 is the retail name; FS9 is its software-generation shorthand, visible in the main program fs9.exe, the settings file FS9.cfg and add-on compatibility labels.
FS2004, Flight Simulator 9 and A Century of Flight: which name is correct?
All three are correct names for the same Windows simulator, but each describes a different part of its identity.

The nearby version sequence makes the FS9 label clearer: Flight Simulator 2000 belongs to version 7, Flight Simulator 2002 to version 8, and Flight Simulator 2004 to version 9. Its successor belongs to the version 10 generation but is normally called FSX, not FS10.
Like the older Flight Simulator releases, FS2004 therefore has both a public-facing edition name and a technical version identity. Catalogue descriptions such as “Flight Simulator FS9”, “FS9 Flight Simulator” and “flight sim 9” combine those same labels; they do not identify separate products.
What is fs9.exe?
fs9.exe is the main executable that launches Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.
It sits in the simulator’s root installation folder, which is often named Flight Simulator 9. The drive and parent folders vary with the Windows version, installation method and any custom location chosen by the user.
If an add-on installer asks for the “FS9 path” or reports that it cannot find fs9.exe, select the folder containing that file. A mistake we see regularly is pointing the installer at a subfolder such as Aircraft or Addon Scenery instead of the FS2004 root folder.
FS9.cfg is a different file: it stores simulator settings rather than launching the program. On modern Windows installations it is normally under %APPDATA%\Microsoft\FS9, not beside fs9.exe. If the configuration file is absent, launching the simulator normally creates it; renaming an existing copy can also force FS2004 to build a fresh one, but custom settings will need to be restored.
What should you do if fs9.exe is missing or not found?
- Check the selected folder: the installer needs the FS2004 root directory containing
fs9.exe, not the desktop shortcut or an add-on subfolder. - Check for multiple installations: compare the target shown in the working FS2004 shortcut with the path chosen by the add-on installer. Older installers may use an outdated Windows registry path after the simulator has been moved.
- Repair a genuinely missing file: check the security software’s quarantine history, then repair or reinstall FS2004 from legitimate installation media or files. Do not download a loose replacement executable; it may be unsafe or belong to a different patch level.

Do not rename fs9.exe to fs2004.exe. Shortcuts, utilities and add-on installers may look specifically for the original filename.
Is FS09 a different flight simulator?
FS09 is normally a mistyping or informal variation of FS9, not a separate Microsoft Flight Simulator release.
There is no official FS09 edition corresponding to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, and the normal executable is fs9.exe, not fs09.exe. In an add-on description, “FS09” will usually mean FS9, but check the package documentation if its compatibility is unclear.
Is FS9 the same as FS9.1?
FS9 names the overall simulator platform, while FS9.1 means FS2004 with Microsoft’s official 9.1 update installed.
The update changes the installed software revision but does not create a separate simulator. The program remains fs9.exe, the product remains Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, and add-ons still describe the platform as FS9.
Some aircraft, scenery, gauges and utilities explicitly require FS9.1 because they depend on updated simulator files. If a package says FS9.1 required, install the official update before using it; a general FS9 compatible label alone does not always confirm the required patch level.
Will FS9 add-ons work in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004?
Yes: an add-on labelled FS9 is intended for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, although its stated update and dependency requirements still apply.
