How do I move the camera with the mouse in X-Plane?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn how to move the camera with the mouse in X-Plane, including right-drag look, wheel zoom, viewpoint movement and fixes when controls fail.

In X-Plane, hold the right mouse button and drag to look around the 3D cockpit or orbit most external views. Use the mouse wheel to zoom. The mouse normally changes direction and zoom, not the camera’s physical position; use X-Plane’s view-movement keys for translation.

How do I use mouse look in the X-Plane cockpit?

Right-dragging is X-Plane’s standard mouse-look gesture in a 3D cockpit.

  1. Select a 3D cockpit view. Choose it from the View menu if the aircraft opens in a 2D panel or another view.
  2. Move the pointer away from controls. An empty section of windscreen or cockpit trim avoids accidentally operating a switch or knob.
  3. Hold the right mouse button and drag. Drag left or right to turn your head and up or down to change its pitch.
  4. Turn the mouse wheel to zoom. Scrolling changes the field of view, making the panel appear nearer or farther away.
  5. Use the left button for cockpit controls. Left-clicking is normally reserved for switches, buttons, levers and other manipulators.

How do I move the camera position rather than just look?

Physical camera movement requires X-Plane’s view-translation commands because ordinary mouse movement only changes where the camera points. This distinction matters in the cockpit: wheel zoom alters perspective, while moving the viewpoint changes your virtual seating position.

With the standard desktop bindings, the arrow keys commonly move the viewpoint laterally and vertically, while , and . move it backwards and forwards. Custom keyboard profiles can replace these assignments, so open Settings, select Keyboard and search for view or move view if they do not respond.

Our downloadable view and camera command reference covers movement, rotation, zoom and custom bindings. Extra mouse buttons can also send these commands if the mouse’s configuration software supports keyboard mappings.

How do I move around with Free Camera?

Free Camera detaches the viewpoint from the aircraft, allowing it to be placed anywhere around the airport or scenery. Select Free Camera from X-Plane’s View menu, right-drag to aim, and use the configured view-movement commands to translate the camera.

Choose an orbiting external view when you want the camera to remain centred on the aircraft. Fixed tower and runway views have different tracking behaviour and will not necessarily orbit the aircraft when dragged.

Why is X-Plane mouse look not working?

Mouse look usually fails because the wrong button, view type or input handler is active.

  • Nothing happens when dragging: use the right mouse button, not the left, and confirm that X-Plane has keyboard and mouse focus.
  • The cockpit will not turn: select a 3D cockpit view. Some older aircraft only include a 2D panel and do not have a complete 3D interior to inspect.
  • The wheel changes a knob: move the pointer away from interactive controls before scrolling. Some manipulators deliberately accept wheel input.
  • A trackpad does not drag: enable secondary click in the operating system and use a secondary-click-and-drag gesture. A physical mouse is usually easier for sustained camera movement.
  • The view moves unexpectedly: inspect custom keyboard profiles, head-tracking software and camera plug-ins. Disable the camera plug-in temporarily before deleting X-Plane preferences or reinstalling the simulator.

How do I save a cockpit camera position?

Quick Look positions let you recall a carefully placed cockpit view without moving the camera again. With standard bindings, position the view, hold Ctrl and press a numeric-keypad digit to save it; press that digit alone to recall it.

On a compact keyboard without a numeric keypad, search for Quick Look under X-Plane’s keyboard settings and assign suitable keys. Save separate positions for the pilot’s seat, overhead panel, pedestal and important side panels.

Do I need an X-Plane camera add-on?

No camera add-on is required for cockpit mouse look, external orbiting, Free Camera or saved Quick Looks. Add-ons become useful for cinematic paths, specialised tracking or more elaborate preset management; if you install one from our X-Plane add-ons and utilities library, check its bindings because it may override the standard right-drag behaviour.
