Expert Overview

This complete photoreal scenery for X-Plane 12 and 11 transforms Washington State with high-resolution orthophotos sourced from 2017/2018 USDA imagery. The pack covers the entire region, from its mountainous interiors to scenic coastal areas, featuring optimized zoom levels (ZL18 near airports, ZL17 near secondary airfields, and ZL16 across broader landscapes). Thanks to its extensive coverage and detailed textures, this add-on provides excellent VFR realism and enhances popular airports such as Seattle–Tacoma, Spokane International, and smaller GA destinations like Tacoma Narrows.

With the scenery already compiled in DDS format, users benefit from ready-to-fly, high-quality landscapes that mesh beautifully with third-party UHD terrain packages, including AlpilotX’s robust enhancements. Having personally explored Washington’s varied terrain under different flying conditions, I can confidently say this mod significantly improves the overall flight experience, offering a seamless and immersive environment that flight simulation enthusiasts are sure to appreciate.

A complete, photorealistic (orthophoto) scenery pack for X-Plane 12 and 11 covering the entire US state of Washington originally compiled by Forkboy2 and converted into the correct sim format (DDS) by Fly Away Simulation.

Created using satellite imagery from 2017/2018 from data that was made public domain by USDA Farm Service Agency.

The scenery uses zoom Level 18 near ICAO airports, Zoom Level 17 near other airports, and Zoom Level 16 everywhere else (using the Automated Zoom Levels code by Artesim).

The scenery is a very large download and we also recommend a decent mesh add-on to complement the scenery. AlpilotX has released a UHD version that covers the areas required for Washington State and you can find that here.

Note

These photorealistic files have already been pre-built (or pre-compiled) into the DDS format ready for X-Plane. While they make the package larger and download times longer, we find users prefer this over having to convert the files themselves manually. The archive has been zipped using higher compression which slightly overcomes the larger uncompressed DDS format.

How to install this mod

X-Plane scenery

  1. Extract the downloaded archive

    Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.

  2. Copy into Custom Scenery

    Place the scenery folder into X-Plane 12/Custom Scenery/.

  3. Set scenery load order

    X-Plane loads sceneries top-to-bottom from Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini. Custom airports should be ABOVE mesh and ortho-imagery.

  4. Restart X-Plane

    Close X-Plane completely and relaunch. The new content loads automatically.

  5. Always read the included readme

    Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.

Need help. I have downloaded the HD images and the resolution in XP is maxed out. The scenery in XP is quite blurry and there is no autogen occurring at all. I have Texture Res at max in XP. I have your California scenery HD and all the zzz meshes for the entire continental US successfully installed and Cali looks great so I know the standards to expect for WA. Please help. Thanks.
