To use a PS5 DualSense controller with Microsoft Flight Simulator on PC, connect it by USB-C or Bluetooth, confirm Windows detects it, then select it in the simulator’s Controls screen and create a custom profile. If MSFS does not read it correctly, use Steam Input or another XInput translation method—but never both at once.
Should I use USB or Bluetooth?
Use a data-capable USB cable for the initial setup because it removes Bluetooth pairing, battery and wireless-driver problems from the equation. A charge-only cable can light the controller without making it appear in Windows.
- Connect by USB: plug the DualSense into a USB port with a USB-C data cable, preferably before starting Microsoft Flight Simulator.
- Or pair by Bluetooth: hold the PS and Create buttons until the light bar flashes, then add it from Windows Bluetooth settings as
Wireless Controller. - Check Windows detection: press Windows+R, enter
joy.cpl, open the controller’s properties and test its sticks, triggers and buttons. - Launch MSFS: open Controls or Controls Options and look for a device named DualSense, Wireless Controller, Gamepad or a similar generic label.
If the controller fails in joy.cpl, the problem is outside the simulator. Try another data cable, USB port or Bluetooth adapter before changing any MSFS bindings.
Should I enable Steam Input for DualSense?
Enable Steam Input only when the native controller entry is missing or its axes do not work correctly. Native input and translated XInput are alternative methods, not settings to run together.

For the Steam edition, use the game’s per-title controller settings to enable Steam Input for the PlayStation controller. It converts the DualSense into a virtual Xbox-compatible pad, which MSFS generally handles more predictably.
If native input already works, leave Steam Input and other controller-mapping software disabled. A mistake we see constantly is one physical controller appearing as both Wireless Controller and an emulated Xbox pad, causing doubled rudder, brakes or camera movement.
How do I map DualSense controls in MSFS?
Create a custom controller profile and bind analogue flight controls to axis commands rather than separate button commands. This preserves proportional movement instead of sending full control deflection whenever the stick moves.
- Select the controller: open the Controls screen and choose the DualSense, Wireless Controller or virtual Xbox device.
- Create a custom preset: duplicate an editable profile or make a new one rather than altering a protected default.
- Scan each input: use the simulator’s input-search function, move one stick or press one button, and check that only the intended control responds.
- Bind primary axes: assign the left stick to aileron and elevator axes. Push forward and verify that the aircraft’s elevator commands nose-down; invert only an axis that moves in the wrong direction.
- Assign rudder: use the triggers for left and right rudder when they are reported as separate analogue inputs. Do not assign one trigger alone to a full-range combined rudder axis.
- Add essential commands: map pitch trim, brakes, throttle changes, flaps, landing gear, view reset and cockpit/external view switching before less-used functions.
- Save and test: apply the preset, confirm it remains selected, then test in a simple aircraft before loading an airliner or helicopter.
Use the right stick for camera movement if you mainly hand-fly. If you prefer an analogue throttle, the right stick can serve that role, but cockpit viewing will then need the mouse or another control. Start with only enough dead zone to stop neutral drift and soften the response around the centre if the aircraft feels twitchy. Large dead zones make small corrections difficult. Why is my DualSense not working properly in MSFS?
Most DualSense problems come from duplicate input layers, digital commands assigned instead of axes, or an unsaved custom profile.

When old profiles have become tangled, it is faster to clear the conflicting controller assignments and rebuild one clean preset than to chase every duplicate command individually.
Do DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers and the touchpad work?
The sticks, triggers and ordinary buttons are the dependable PC controls; advanced DualSense features depend on the MSFS edition, connection and input method. XInput translation presents the controller as an Xbox pad, so adaptive triggers, PlayStation button glyphs, gyro data and advanced haptics may be unavailable.
The touchpad may appear as one button or be translated into mouse movement, while the PS button may open a launcher overlay. Disable those mappings if they interfere with cockpit control.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 was never released on PlayStation, although its PC version can accept a DualSense as a Windows controller. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 also has a native PS5 edition, but that does not make its PC controller handling identical to the console version.
