Procedure coverage

Lihue’s instrument coverage reaches three of its four runway ends, leaving one end without a published approach. The eight approach procedures provide a broad mix of ILS, localiser, RNAV (GPS) and VOR options rather than relying on a single navigation method. Departure coverage includes both published departure procedures and obstacle departure procedures.

Runways and visual coverage

Runways 03/21 and 17/35 are each 6,500 ft long, so choosing between their two alignments does not involve trading away runway length. Three separate 40 ft concrete helipads complement the fixed-wing runway layout. The Hawaiian Islands Sectional supplies the wider visual context absent from the terminal procedures, including Lihue’s relationship to Barking Sands PMRF, 25 nm west, whose nine-chart set is appreciably thinner.
