Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004

This comprehensive freeware aircraft package for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 showcases an accurate Boeing 737-800 rendition wearing a Star Alliance livery. It features a fully developed exterior model from GMAX, refined flight characteristics tested by a real-world 737-licensed pilot, and specialized textures that balance high detail with favorable frame rates.

Detailed Exterior Craftsmanship

The visual presentation relies on a scratch-built model (a model built from raw data rather than a default template) that benefits from GMAX technology. Created by Erick Cantu, it incorporates moving surfaces such as flaps, ailerons, and landing gear mechanisms. Designers have also implemented reflective elements known as dynamic shine, giving the fuselage a realistic metallic quality under varying light conditions. Moreover, the entire lighting setup adds another layer of immersion with carefully placed navigation and strobe lights.

Performance-Oriented Texturing

This set of textures balances high resolution with efficiency. A 32-bit paint scheme is applied to the fuselage for superior clarity, and DXT3 compression is utilized for the other components to ensure stable performance. Steve Drabek crafted the Star Alliance repaint, capturing the signature black-and-white scheme recognized globally. In addition to that, a distinctive Lauda-themed repaint is also provided for those interested in alternative liveries.

Tested Flight Dynamics

Shawn Anderson developed the flight dynamics (FDE) and collaborated with a 737-rated commercial pilot to confirm the accuracy of the handling profile. Aircraft behavior during critical phases—such as takeoff, climb, and descent—has been tuned to replicate the real Boeing 737-800's performance envelope. As a twin-engine jet renowned for its reliability, the 737-800 typically carries short- to medium-haul passengers, and the included configurations closely follow actual operational procedures.

Notable Installation Process

Upon unzipping this package into your simulator's Aircraft folder, you will find a new directory labeled Kittyhawk 737-800 Lauda. It will appear in the aircraft selection menu under Boeing / 737-800 / KLM NEW Colors. Additionally, move all contents from the provided effects folder to your main Flight Simulator 2004 effects directory to match the recommended lighting and visual effects configuration.

This freeware release integrates everything needed in a single download, ensuring enthusiasts can enjoy a finished model without depending on any additional base packages. Erick Cantu, Shawn Anderson, and Steve Drabek have meticulously designed, tested, and painted this add-on to deliver a faithful representation of the iconic 737-800 in a Star Alliance theme.
