FSX United Airlines Douglas DC-3

United Airlines’ 1940s-era livery brings the Douglas DC-3 to life with period-correct colors, logos, striping, and registration placement while retaining the familiar default airframe and handling. Designed for Microsoft Flight Simulator X, it requires AS4SUMJE.ZIP to align the base textures for an authentic vintage finish.

Flight Simulator X Prepar3D

This repaint set reintroduces a vintage United Airlines livery for the Douglas DC-3, specifically tailored for use in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It builds on the classic form of the default DC-3 while emphasizing distinctive United Airlines hues, and it aims to capture the 1940s aesthetic. The repaint reflects the collaborative work of James Eden, Jon Murchison, and Gary Harper.

Authentic Revision Details

The included textures have been carefully assembled by Gary Harper in association with modifications originally created by James Eden and Jon Murchison. This project requires the AS4SUMJE.ZIP file, which modifies the base FSX DC-3 textures to align with United Airlines’ retro style. When installed, this repaint ensures accurate placement of logos, striping, and registration markings.

Historical Background on the Douglas DC-3

The Douglas DC-3 emerged as a pivotal aircraft for many airlines worldwide, and it made passenger travel more efficient and accessible during the early to mid-20th century. It balanced robust range with a stable twin-engine configuration, granting airlines cost-effective performance that translated well into daily operations. Those radial powerplants gave it dependable reliability on both short and moderately long routes.

United Airlines in the 1940s

During the 1940s, United Airlines leveraged sturdy airframes like the DC-3 to conduct its domestic routes. Passengers at the time benefited from amenities like heated cabins, which greatly improved comfort. As a result, the DC-3 was often considered a pinnacle of commercial flight technology, and United Airlines grew its network using aircraft known for dependability and a refined onboard experience.

Implementation Instructions

  • Ensure that you already have the freeware default DC-3 model installed in your simulator. The base aircraft is typically included with Microsoft Flight Simulator X, though this repaint requires an additional file (AS4SUMJE.ZIP) found in the Fly Away Simulation library.
  • Extract the texture folder named “ua40” into the appropriate DC-3 aircraft directory within your Flight Simulator X folder.
  • Open your aircraft.cfg file, and add the following entry by replacing xx with the next available numeric value for your [fltsim] sections.

description="The Douglas DC-3 revolutionized air transportation and airline service during the 1930s and 1940s. It was a luxury airliner that boasted cabin heat and running water in its on-board lavatory. With the right balance of efficiency, range, speed, and payload, the DC-3 was the first aircraft to earn a profit for its owners just by carrying passengers. The hero of early airlines, a handful of DC-3s are still at work today."

Key Notes

Flight Model Compatibility
This texture set is based on the default DC-3 flight model, enabling seamless integration without extensive adjustments to the aircraft’s flight dynamics.
System Requirements

Developer Credits
The creative efforts behind this repaint include original work by James Eden and Jon Murchison, along with final textural refinements by Gary Harper.

Requires dependencies

This add-on may require the following files to function properly. If this is a repaint, the dependency below is likely the base aircraft package.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D add-on
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place files per the readme

Most FSX add-ons go into one of: SimObjects\Airplanes\, Addon Scenery\, Effects\, or Gauges\.
  3. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
